Unplanned Downtime

The eagle eyed among you may have noticed that we just recently came back from around a 37 hour downtime. This was not planned by us (otherwise we would have told you in advance!), but was due to a hardware failure on our server and our provider being unable to replace it in a timely fashion.

On Tuesday evening at around 21:40 UTC, one of the routers at the datacenter was hit with a large DDoS. This attack wasn't aimed at us at all, but rather at the router itself (motives unknown), and along with a few other clients, caused our IPs to stop routing correctly. This was the initial cause of the downtime.

Within 5-10 minutes, we were back up again after the router had recovered from the attack and then our primary networking controller on the server physically failed. We have redundancies built in to combat situations like this, and what simply should have happened is that the connection fell back to our secondary networking controller, and the server continued as normal until a hardware replacement could be sourced for our primary controller. What actually happened was that the network connection fell back to our secondary controller, and then within 15 minutes, our secondary controller failed as well, leaving us completely without networking, and in what was, given the chance of these failures, an unprecedented situation.

This was diagnosed and our ISP informed us the server would have to undergo a full rebuild as the networking is contained on the motherboard. They completed this pretty quickly (it was diagnosed and rebuilt within 16 hours), but they then informed us that the server room we are located in was full and they were having trouble finding a spot for a new box. This is what took all of the further time, while we were waiting for them to free up space. Eventually they found us a spot and re-provisioned the server, and here we are back again.

So, apologies for the downtime, but it was a little out of our control!

Revised Notice - Beta NDA Lifted

Revised Notice

I am pleased to say that Jagex has lifted the NDA, though they are requesting that people hold off with the pictures and videos until the client has been further developed, to give a better demonstration of the future of RuneScape. Now that the NDA has been lifted, it will be left to our users discretion if they wish to post information about the beta.

Happy Posting!

Fansite Exclusive: New Skills Sneak Peak (April Fools)

Quote

Hello Tip.It,

With the recent announcement regarding RuneScape 3, we thought it was about time that we also shed some light on the two new skills we are adding later this year, and what better way to get the ball rolling than a fansite exclusive!

The first new skill is something our players have been suggesting for a while, and will tie into the recently released player owned ports update, as well as Soul Wars and the Varrock museum. That's right, the Eastern Lands are finally going to open up for your personal exploration with the release of the Exploration skill!

The Exploration skill opens up the ability to travel to the many islands of the Eastern Lands for yourself, courtesy of an expedition for the great Varrock museum. However, massively expanding the size of the world map is just the beginning, as the Exploration skill will open a gate to researching and exploring the Eastern Lands, participating in archaeological digs, trekking through dangerous jungles, and even commanding your own ship in search of lost lands and sunken treasure.

We aren't ready to release the specifics just yet, but through your explorations you will not only become more proficient as an explorer, but will gain knowledge and skills unique to the Eastern Lands, such as the ability to create brand new scrimshaws, and access to brand new resources to be used in new and exciting ways in conjunction with Exploration and the existing skills. As an added bonus, your exploration of the Eastern Lands is tied to player owned ports. For those who have already discovered new regions, you will find you have ready access to these regions upon your arrival. For those who progress faster than their ship captains, or who are not yet able to send out their own ships, your progress in the Eastern Lands will be reflected by the missions you can take in port. You might even manage to secure some resources for your port on your travels.

As promised, we are also releasing a skill for free players and members alike later on this summer. The Engineering skill truly has something for everyone, and like Exploration the focus is on enhancing your other skills in new and exciting ways. Craft better items such as armour or crossbows with the help of new technology you develop through the Engineering skill allowing you to enhance stats and add new effects. A sword that does extra damage, or armour that helps you keep your balance. You might even find ways to help you move around the world in a quick and flexible fashion. One could go so far as to say you'll be able to feel the wind beneath your wings.

For our members, the Exploration skill is not to be left out. The fusion of new technology with ancient techniques as you combine Engineering and Exploration is going to be truly spectacular!

Stay tuned as later on this week will be the first of several BTS videos showcasing the new skills, starting with Exploration followed by Engineering. This year is truly shaping up to be one of the largest and most exciting in history!

Tip.it General Survey - 2013

The Tip.it administration is pleased to present the first ever general survey, a chance for all our users to provide us with feedback about how you use the forums and our site, as well as feedback on our staff and policies, in an effort to see how we can improve ourselves to better suit the needs and wants of our users. We are looking for feedback from all our users, whether you are new to the site or a veteran, whether you have a clean record or a rap sheet as long as you are tall.

When filling out the survey, please be as honest as you like, don't worry about hurting our feelings. You are welcome to mention specific Staff members or events if you feel it it would be helpful to us, including naming administrators. We want to know how you truly feel, even if you have negative thoughts, as this is the best way for us to self improve.

Only administrators will ever know what your answers are, and your name will be kept 100% confidential. Information relevant to specific staff groups will be shared with that group in the following manner:

After we have received and reviewed the results of the survey, the administrators will compile a summary of of the replies detailing areas where you think we need to improve, as well as areas you think we are handling well. We may use bits and pieces of peoples responses in our summaries, but no names or identifying information will be included. It is these summaries that will be presented to the relevant areas of our staff.

Please PM completed surveys to Randox or tripsis.

IE Vulnerability - Mouse Tracking

A vulnerability in Internet Explorer versions 6 through 10 allows websites to track your mouse while they are open in the program, even if IE is minmized. While RuneScape bank pins should be safe against this as the numbers move around, anyone who uses an onscreen keyboard to avoid any potential keyloggers would be vulnerable.

From this article on spider.io:

Quote

On the 1st of October, 2012, we disclosed to Microsoft the following security vulnerability in Internet Explorer, versions 6–10, which allows your mouse cursor to be tracked anywhere on the screen—even if the Internet Explorer window is minimized. The vulnerability is particularly troubling because it compromises the security of virtual keyboards and virtual keypads.

...

Whilst the Microsoft Security Research Center has acknowledged the vulnerability in Internet Explorer, they have also stated that there are no immediate plans to patch this vulnerability in existing versions of the browser. It is important for users of Internet Explorer to be made aware of this vulnerability and its implications.

The vulnerability is already being exploited by at least two display ad analytics companies across billions of page impressions per month.

Revised Naming Names procedure - tell us what you think!

We try very hard to keep our guidelines up with the times, but sometimes we need a little help. Previously, our forum rules forbade naming other players in a negative light. This was done in effort to protect users from false accusations and having circular fights based on hearsay on the forums. This rule was old, dating back to a time when topics like this were a lot more common. Recently though, it was highlighted just poorly this rule has aged over time when a forum member tried to show a video of a new dueling glitch and by our previous version of the rule, it had to be removed.

We try our best to serve our community, and part of the way we do this is by keeping our rules current and reasonable. Unfortunately some things tend to slip through over time. As promised though this rule was revised to hopefully allow more freedom of discussion. Rest assured though we are always open to feedback -- on this rule and any others. We encourage you guys to post if you have any!

The current revised Naming Names rules read as follows:

Quote

Creating topics solely to draw negative attention on another player is classified as spam. Since we are in no way associated with Jagex LTD, we're unable to help if you have been scammed/hacked/etc. As a result, topics/posts like these are not productive and will be removed. If you are attempting to alert your community members of a scam, a dangerous glitch, or a current event that affects the community at large then be sure that the focus of your topic is educating people/warning people and not simply finger-wagging or else you risk removal. Whether or not a topic fits that description is up to moderator's discretion.

If your topic or post was removed for naming and shaming and you disagree with it, or if you feel you are the target of harassment, feel free to contact an administrator.

We still had a very real concern about damaging user reputation; yet we wanted to allow people to show their vids/pictures to warn players or discuss serious/recent events that affect the community. The above is a compromise of the two. Ideally what this will prevent are still any "he scammed, she scammed" that might occur, yet still allow users the freedom to discuss the botting epidemic/EoC glitches/etc provided they make the effort to encourage discussion. (And while we always offered the ability to contact the administration if you disagreed with a post removal, or if someone is harassing you, now it's in writing to help spread awareness.)

As mentioned previously, we are definitely open to feedback. We don't want to be more restrictive than what you would find on YT, reddit, or the RSOF...but we are a fansite that aims to promote mature discussion, too! Hopefully you'll find this more up-with-the-times to allow a better experience here on the forums.
