A Foolish Contest!

A Foolish Contest!

Over the years Tip.It staff has prided itself with our yearly April Fools Prank... You may recall the forum being invaded with Poke'mon, being RickRoll'D with bait of Jagex/Tip.It partnership, various fake NEW skills (horseback riding, engineering, sailing), Justin Bieber cursor, fake staff forums and so on. As you ponder over these past pranks you may recall that you had a better idea (obviously not better than Poke'mon though, that was HILARIOUS) that you think staff should have done instead.... Well, *Drumroll*... Now's your chance!

The staff has decided to run a contest for Tip.It's best April's Fools Prank! You can privately submit your prank ideas, the Tip.It Staff will pick their favourite, and that's what we'll surprise you all with this year! Some may find this the cheap way out of a staff made idea... but we are going to shamelessly run this contest anywho's! I mean, what's better than the staff working with the users to make for one of the most memorable pranks ever?!?

Forum Rearranging and a New Addition!

We have made two significant changes to our forum layout. First, the RuneScape News forum has been made a subforum of the Announcements, Rules and Security Warnings board. This was done to make some room for a brand new forum: Introductions, Farewells, & Forum Account Help. This forum is the new place for people to introduce themselves to the community, inform people that they will be leaving or taking a break, and for people to get help with their forum accounts. As a result of this change, the Introductions & Farewells sticky in General Discussion will be locked and archived.

We hope you all approve of this new change

Moderator Trainee Recruitment Drive 2012! - APPLICATIONS CLOSED

Moderator Trainee Recruitment Drive 2012
Application Deadline: March 1st at 11:55PM GMT

General Information, About the Role, & Who Can Apply

We are looking for 1-3 new people to join our moderator team as trainees! If you're interested, active, and think you'd make a great moderator, keep reading!

What does a moderator do?

The most obvious role of a moderator is patrolling the forums to remove inappropriate content and handle user-submitted reports. Moderators lock threads, remove posts, move misplaced threads, issue warnings to users who violate the rules, and our higher ranked moderators also issue bans. But other less obvious roles (but equally important) include continuing to browse the forums as a regular user, being a leader of the community, setting a good example, and participating in private moderator discussions to form new policies, re-evaluating old policies, and working together with the team to make the Tip.It Forum as enjoyable as possible. Do not apply to join the team if you think the role is just about dealing with reports now and then. Trainees will be expected to do that too, but the most important part of the role is being involved in the community, being able to work together as a team, and constantly looking for ways that you can help improve Tip.It.

What are we looking for and what do we expect from new candidates?

Ultimately, we're looking for new moderators with initiative. We want people with a passion for Tip.It, fresh ideas to bring to the team, and the desire to implement them. If you can think of forum rules you don't like or policies you want changed, that means you have a desire to change things and make them better. Qualities like that make for a good moderator!

We need active moderators! We expect our trainees to browse Tip.It on a daily basis. We understand that sometimes you're unavailable due to holidays, vacations, exams, and other reasons, but on a typical day we expect daily participation. We want active and community-involved moderators!

This recruitment drive is purely focused on finding people to moderate the RuneScape boards. We're not looking for Off-Topic moderators at this time because those boards are already very well taken care of!

Candidates must be confident in a leadership role. We do not immediately expect moderator trainees to lead themselves and function without guidance. We will be there to help you in the beginning! But as the months go on, moderators progress through the ranks and are expected to help train new moderators and answer their questions. Some moderators even go on to become admins, who are the leaders and managers of the entire website and forum! So it's important that moderators are comfortable in working with others and acting as leaders.

Being a moderator means you need a good sense of judgement, the ability to make decisions without bias, and a professional attitude. We're not a boring, serious group of people and we do joke around, but it's also important that moderators are professional in their decision-making and in the way that they interact with users in their official capacity (such as issuing warnings).

Who can apply?

Below are a list of requirements needed to apply:

You may not be part of the Tip.It Crew. However, you may apply if you are a member of the Editorial Panel or Tip.It Monster Hunting Team.

You must have registered at least 3 months ago and be active in the community.

You must have a post count greater than 150.

You must be interested in moderating the RuneScape forums. We're not looking for Off-Topic moderators at this time!

I applied last time and got denied - can I apply again? Or what if I have been warned or banned before?

If you applied last time but were unsuccessful, we highly encourage you to apply again if you meet the requirements! We are always re-evaluating our standards and changing what we're looking for in candidates, so even if you were rejected last time, you could be accepted this time! If you're still interested, give it a try!

If you have received a warning or ban from a moderator in the past, you are also still welcome to apply. We do not blacklist people who have broken the rules before. If you have broken multiple rules on multiple occasions recently, then yes your chances will go down. But we always keep an open mind. We will consider the severity of the offence(s) and how much time has elapsed since your most recent offence. We promise to be fair and consider everyone.

How To Apply

If you are interested in applying, fill out the below form and send it in a private message to Staff_Applications with the subject "Moderator Application." Remember, this is your chance at a good first impression! Put some effort into it, don't rush, and make sure you answer every question. We're only looking to accept 1-3 new people so put your best foot forward! A tip: it's usually better to write too much than too little! Good luck!

New Forum BBCodes

New Forum BBCodes

We are pleased to present three brand new BBCodes for your enjoyment! Usable anywhere on the forums, these BBCodes allow you to link items, monsters and even worn item sets from Tip.It's databases. The information will appear right in your post! All images can be hovered to show the stats of the linked object. All images can be double clicked on to take you to the relevant page on the website. Clicking on the link does the same.

Items
You can link any item and have it appear inline in your post. For example I personally loved my Loading Item Information... to death (literally, it lost it's Loading Item Information... far too many times to count). But since Jagex released the Loading Item Information... I felt complled to move on to the more efficient of the two. And as much as I miss my Loading Item Information..., the Loading Item Information... is pretty darn good.

Syntax: [item=id] The id can be found in the URL on the item in the items database. For example in http://open.tip.it/items/view/3249-beer, the id would be 3249
Example: [item=3249] will become Beer.

Monsters
You can also link any monster in the same manner. For example, which is more profitable? Loading Monster Information... or Loading Monster Information...s?

Syntax: [monster=id] The id can be found in the URL on the item in the bestiary. For example in http://open.tip.it/bestiary/view/89-melzar-the-mad, the id would be 89
Example: [monster=89] will become Melzar the Mad.

Sets

Complete item sets my also be shown. For example:

Loading Item Set Information...

Or, because I can (this is intentional):

Loading Item Set Information...

Syntax: [set=aura:id,head:id,cape:id,neck:id,quiver:id,weapon:id,body:id,shield:id,legs:id,gloves:id,boots:id,ring:id] You can omit any slot you want and it will appear blank.
Example: [set=aura:19,head:19,cape:19,neck:19,quiver:19,weapon:19,body:19,shield:19,legs:19,gloves:19,boots:19,ring:19] will become a set with pitta bread in every slot.

Farewell & TET Memories

Farewell & TET Memories

As most of you are aware, yesterday officially marked the end of our Tip.It Events Team with our closing event, a Wilderness battle between TET and RS Wiki.

TET began in August 2004. Since then, it has worked to provide the community with fun and exciting events on a regular basis, usually with four events a month. Unfortunately, over the last couple of months we have seen a large shift in the community. People are less interested in "just for fun" events and are more interested in events that will yield some kind of profit or benefit, as made evident by decreasing event attendance levels. While there's nothing wrong with this shift in the community, it has made it difficult for us to continue with TET. So it is with a heavy heart that TET is officially coming to a close.

On behalf of the entire team I would like to thank all past event attendees and hosts. We greatly appreciate your patience and support over the years. We have had a terrific run and have shared some wonderful memories. We have had good times and we have had bad times, but we will never forget all the fun that was had and the support that we received from our community. We hope that our great event memories will continue to live on in the months and years to come.

For those of you who are still interested in fun events, just look around! RuneScape is still bustling with events. Keep an eye on the RSOF or even get your friends together to start an event of your own! RuneScape is what you make it so get out there and 'Bring on the Fun'

Sincerely,
The Tip.It Events Team

The Editorial Panel is Hiring!

The Editorial Panel is Hiring!

About The Editorial Panel

The Editorial Panel is a group of people composed of authors and editors. Together, we work to produce a weekly publication called the Tip.It Times, and we are recruiting!

Do you enjoy discussing and debating RuneScape-related topics in General Discussion? Do you have strong opinions about RuneScape updates? Do you enjoy writing fictional stories? Or do you have impeccable grammar and spelling skills? If you can answer "yes" to one of the above, a job with the Editorial Panel may be just the thing for you! You don't have to be an incredible writer to join the team because our editors will proofread your articles for spelling, grammar, organization and flow. We're looking for people who can stir discussion, provoke thought and encourage debate. So even if you don't normally find yourself writing articles but often create threads to discuss ideas and issues in General Discussion, this may be the job for you!

About The Job

This is a volunteer, non-paying job.

Authors and editors are typically given an assignment once a month (2-5 weeks notice), for which they must meet their deadline. Authors may select their own article topics.

Editorial Panel members' work is published for thousands of users to read, discuss and enjoy!

Available Positions

There are two positions available in the Editorial Panel: authors and editors. If you have the necessary skills, you could even do both! We are looking to take on 2-4 new people for each position. Continue reading for descriptions on each role.

Authors

Authors are responsible for writing editorial or fiction articles for the Tip.It Times. They choose their own topics and work on a deadline to produce their article for a specific publication. They are usually given about 2-5 weeks notice for each deadline. Authors may write about anything they want, as long as it is RuneScape-related and follows a few basic rules (such as appropriateness). Editorial articles should be blog-like, controversial, original, interesting and thought provoking. They reflect your personal opinions (or what you notice that other peoples' opinions are) about RuneScape updates, features or general happenings. Fictional writers create stories that occur in a RuneScape setting. Stories should be engaging, exciting and related to the game. All authors must be able to accept constructive criticism from both their team members before the article is released and from the Tip.it community after the article is published.

Word count for articles is flexible, but is expected to be a minimum of about 600 words.

Editors

Editors are very important parts of the Editorial Panel. They are responsible for reading, editing and commenting on articles before they are published. They review articles for accuracy, quality, spelling and grammatical errors. As such, they are required to have good writing skills and knowledge of grammatical rules. Editors are also encouraged to comment on and critique the content of the article and give suggestions where they see fit. They are also welcome to provide topic suggestions to authors.

Editors may also write their own articles if they wish, but authors are given priority time slots.

How To Apply

Everyone may apply to join the Editorial Panel! It doesn't matter if you have applied unsuccessfully in the past or hold another staff position; if you are interested - submit your application now!

PM your application to tripsis - do not post it here!

Put Editorial Panel Application as the subject.

Take your time to make a good impression. Do not rush or put in half effort.

Read and answer each question thoroughly and to the best of your ability.

Even if your application is not chosen, we will keep it on record and contact you at a later date if need be.

There is no official deadline to submit your application. We will continue to accept applications until the positions have been filled. Out of fairness, we will try to wait about two weeks before accepting anyone, so this is not entirely a first-come, first-serve basis. Once we have filled the positions, we will still accept applications but will likely keep them on file until new positions open up.
