computer games stole my son

that is the headline of my states newspaper "The Sunday Times"

usually i only buy this newspaper for the tv guide and flick through to see what drivel is in it, as usually it is more of gossip magazine than an actual NEWS paper

basically the picture is a screenshot ripped from the rs site, which is titled "meander through the swamps" the runescape logo with the runes and sword on top of a background blurred computers

the article is interviewing a father who is comparing his sons computer game addiction to heroin, saying how the son was doing well at school and was wanting to become a forensic scientist, to not going to school for 2 months and spent his time alone in a dark room playing runescape for upto 16 hours a day

the article then compares it to alcohol adiction, saying "when you first give someone a drink, you dont realise they are going to becom an alcoholic. you dont thinkits a problem, but by the time it is its too late"

then goes on to say with way graphics and everything are going its going to become an epidemic"

if people want the entire article if you live in western australia you can cough up the $2.20*, if you arent in WA and a mod doesnt rip this down for breaking rules and say its ok, i guess i can type up the article, i just didnt want to write out the article as not wanting to get myself or tip.it in the poo

*more in regional areas :P

edit: see link below and everyone can view for free

please excuse my butchering of the english language, im not much of a writer (but then again nor are the journos in the paper)

post your thoughts, if you are going to abuse keep it as gentle as possible please :)

http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0 ... 20,00.html this is the link i found off the papers website

adtional edit:the headline and picture on the website version of teh article are different to the paper version, also the article is summarised on the website

Even if video games stole her son, what's stopping her from taking a sledgehammer to the computer/console? What's stopping her from grounding her child? What's stopping her from being a parent?

I'll probably say more when I read the article, but so far, that's my premonition.

Yea, I'd have to agree with the parent. When your sense of responsibility has gotten so low that your child is at home, skipping school for two months to play a video game for 16 hours a day, you've hit a point where you can't return.

Social Services should take her kid away and put him in a better home.

well, first of all it's apparently about a father's son, and secondly, it's the families problem. if this kid decides, "i'm gonna throw my life away for runescape" then that's either the kids fault or his parents fault for not taking action. the only thing that comes outta throwing your life away from a game is a bad future and a helluva lot of flaming.

Yes, it's quite obvious that there's more than 1 thing at play here (don't mind the pun).

so there's this thread in p2p general called "the most annoying things ppl do on runescape" i am tempted to post "ya wen im cybering with a girl and they log off for no reason"

LOL!!!!

Funniest thing I've ever read!!

Are the damn parents [developmentally delayed]ed?? Take away the friggin computer if it's that bad, so what if he gets aggressive, he's 15, they're supposed to be his parents.

And ROFL, it says his sister moved out because of his addiction.

And at the end: "I really pray that he gets better. We've got to stay positive for his sake.''

LOL!ROFL!LMAO! Parents FAIL.

am i the only one that wonders the kids stats?

...Yeah... You don't go around and asking where a drug addict's needle [puncture]points are, do you?

Obviously the parents are epic failures. They really do need to get a grip on their son's life. Even if he became violent (according to the article), withdrawal is only natural for those that are addicted. They should have taken better control of the situation.

Even if I feel that the parents should not have had the right to reproduce, I seriously do feel sorry for the child and I hope that he can recover. :(

If I were a father and Knew my son played this game.. I'd let him play his heart out drop in his grades and then. THEN! I would show him the results I'd show him how much weight he's gained all the stamina gone from him how exhausted he is.. all of that, then I would hope that he would get boredof the game and stop :)

"Hope" ain't parenting, kiddo. Any real parent that gave a damn about their child would cut the internet cable and bash the computer in.

I wanna hear what a real parent has to say about this, too. What would they do if their child became addicted to a game (doesn't have to be RuneScape)?

im thinking to get a better idea of the article i might have to type out the whole thing, but im just unsure if this is ok to do like i said before, im not really wanting to getting to trouble with my third post

this is becasue like ive said before there is a bit left out of the online article compared to the paper article.

if a mod or someone similar could clarify this either by post or pm that would be great as im not wanting to get teh site into trouble either

If you properly reference it, you should be fine: (eg. Paper Name, Article Name, Author)

Every time I see these articles, I try to compare it to my life. Hell, I spend 6-8 hours on runescape a night and on vent talking to my clanmates. I know I would have a hard time quitting, but I always play in my free time. Whenever someone wants to go out and do something, I just go outside and do something, I don't waste my time on the computer when I could rather be outside with friends doing something. I dont know if everyone is like this, but I know I am.

I know I wouldnt be able to quit, but a day without rs isnt a big deal to me. I dont understand the whole "rs = crack" theory i guess.

Hmm.. I suppose these parents are not aware of the meaning of discipline? I feel sorry for the kid, parents should be more responsible of a 15 year old, and should be aware that at 15 years of age a person wants to try out everything. There are worse problems, and just as this should have been, they should be looked after as well. :shame:

I just found an even worse case of what happens when people get too addicted to computer gaming:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19766590/

"RENO, Nev. - A couple authorities say were so obsessed with the Internet and video games that they left their babies starving and suffering other health problems have pleaded guilty to child neglect."

Well i could read this article from both perspectives (the parent and the child) because i am a very young parent...And from what i've read I think that it is the parents fault for letting their kid become so addicted. There is really no reason that it would be the kid's fault for becoming so overly addicted to something like that.Even though he is 15 or whatever age he is his parents are still able to control what he does. And for the fact that he would skip school for so long his mom should of kept better track of her kid and what he was doing.
