The True World Map?
Investigating the Layout of RuneScape

Current Images (updated 2013)
[hide=Primary map]This map shows everything that is north of the world as we know it. It is speculated that they are on ground level, as we have many images to support the theory that RuneScape is all one constant plane. This map is from May 2013.

Hey everyone!

For years, players have found strange area locations and planes in seemingly wrong places, that provoke discussion as to how RuneScape is actually laid out in general. For examples of what I'm talking about, see the bottom of this post.

The lesser-known example we will focus on: The Corporeal Beast's Lair
Let me begin with a well known mystery about the Corporeal Beast's lair location:[hide=GIF Animation]24fjmld.gif[/hide](Hint: Look at the wilderness level)

So, midway through passage into the lair, you are transported into 107 wilderness. Suddenly, the game scripts correct the display and show you as not being in the wilderness. So, no real big deal, it's located in 107 wilderness, right?

Let's have a look at the entrance, with HIGH detail:[hide=Dark Warriors' Castle?]2hh0my0.png[/hide]That is the moat by the Dark Warriors' Castle. Not 107 Wilderness. The Lair seems to be floating above ground! What's going on? In fact, this is in fact the Spirit World Version of the Dark Warriors' Fortress that contains the Tormented Wraith.

Looking further around the lair, we can see other locations:
Waterbirth Island Dungeon:[hide=Waterbirth Image]2a57yg.png[/hide]
This screenshot was taken in the Beast's actual chamber. [hide=Tower of Life Dungeon Image]2ep333t.png[/hide]A dungeon that is supposedly located underneath Ardougne is actually here. Interesting.

Layout of Levels:
[hide]diagramdo1.png[/hide]

Why are all these other places in Level 107-120 wilderness? Where is the Corporeal Lair? Certainly not where it should be as the game dictates.

This example leads to the question: is RuneScape all one plane? Are all dungeons located on the same plane? How is RuneScape laid out?

Theories:

Entrances to any dungeon will teleport you to the single dungeon plane which is located north of the Wilderness. Ladders within dungeons will take you to sublevels, just like with buildings above ground. All dungeons in the dungeon plane have positions relative to their entrances in the World Map plane.

Random Event areas, non-world map areas/quest cutscene planes are also located on one plane off the world map, but on ground level. Sublevels are relative to each other.

Regarding houses, I believe these are generated and their data saved to a user, rather than 1 million+ separate planes.

Currently, there exists the -1 level, the ground level, and 3 levels above. In RSHD, the -1 level is used for underwater effects, and is not used for dungeons. Dungeons are located on the ground level far north of the wilderness. If a dungeon has multiple levels, the dungeon is placed in the corresponding level set (e.g. Ground level is actually Level 1).

Dungeons from the old RS2 days are still located north, but have geographically correct locations. As time went on, developers began to run out of room to place new dungeons, and thus needed other areas. This is why newer dungeons are more or less randomly placed.

LADDERS are a great indication of whether a dungeon you are about to enter is actually where it is "supposed" to be. For instance, the Tower of Life ladder does not let you see below, indicating that there is actually nothing there. You are teleported across the world! biggrin.gif Older ladders, and some new, allow you to see below, which suggests that you are changing levels.

Important: Read below if you are hunting for anything to post in this thread!

Various Tips and Tricks to Relative Location:

1. Sextant/Watch/Chart Method (it does not usually work in underground areas) 00 00 00 00 is the Observatory.

2. Auto-Retaliate (your character will run in the direction of the NPC that attacked you, useful for when you have been teleported out of an area)

3. Follow Player (your character will always home in on whatever player you choose, so if that player were to teleport somewhere, you would head in that direction)

4. Orb of Oculus: This will be the main tool used for this map in the future, as it simply outdoes any other form of viewing or navigation. Highly recommended.

5. [NEW] Set a marker on the world map in a dungeon. Sometimes the game will point north to the dungeon's position on the true plane.

For these methods it is to be assumed that ground level of the World Map as shown in-game holds true. Be aware of quest rooms or areas!

(Example: the Watchtower 3rd floor with the quest completed is located off-map)

Places to Look:

1. Corners of Dungeons

2. Corners of Random Events

3. Edges of the World Map

Widescreen is preferred, as it allows you to see as much as possible.

If you have a picture you want to post, please provide the image code and a brief explanation of what is in the picture biggrin.gif Thanks!

Wouldn't it be great if we could get a world map of the entire world as it actually is? icon_thumbsu.gif

I've never noticed the 107 wilderness thing, how odd.

Good find with the outside of the cave, it certainly looks like the rest of the wilderness. But, if there is more to this, I don't know.

If you look at the Clan Wars FFA safe arena, you can see Bounty Hunter in the side of it. I think this is just the way Jagex laid it out for simplicity in editing.

I'm also interested in the discussion of the layout of the game, if anyone else is. Why is it simplistic to put Clan Wars FFA next to the Elven village of Llyeta?

The 107 wilderness like a bug or whatever you call them. The first picture looks like a part of the wilderness as do the rest of them.

I doubt they're supposed to be there, but, what do I know.

Oh, so it was confirmed as a bug? Should have been fixed after a few months.

The one with the cave wall looks like the Fist of Guthix entrance cave. Also when you go into the Fist of Guthix entrance cave it also says some very high level Wilderness for a second, I forget what Wilderness level though, but it's very high.

[insert birds flying in a circle here]

Yes, that sig was annoying.

Yeah, it does. If you go further to the northern side, you'll see more areas.

I agree, it looks a lot like FOG, maybe Corp can be seen from FOG?

Can anyone identify the room under the Beast Chamber?

It's just like how I used to be able to see what seemed like the Freaky Forester's area from the rune essence mine. Or like how the air altar was in the wilderness according the the sextant. Also, when in a dungeon, or somewhere not on the world map, if you open the map, it centers on Lumbridge. It might just be the default area to zoom in on... or maybe not...

The way I understand the RuneScape plane is that yes, it is all one plane. It would be unreasonable for Jagex to seperate it by levels. Instead, I think that every place has like coordinates, and you go to them. Like there's a big black plane where all the random locations are, then a place for dungeons, etc.

Then there's the main map.

The thing about JaGEx is that they seem to be lazy, when it comes to this kinda stuff.

Instead of creating another level, like up and down, they just put the new areas from updates north of the Wilderness.

Maybe they do it to conserve space? But sometimes you can see things from other places. Like your examples.

I think they have a few "planes". One is the ground level world map. Another is the level above that, and maybe some more above that. When you use the world map on those levels, it shows where you would be if you were on the ground level, in other words, it's accurate. Then there's -1 level, as explained in a development diary. It's a rather new level, mostly made for water effects to look pretty.

Then, there's the "other dimension". It's the plane where dungeons, underground areas, special areas etc. go. Either they're on their own level, or they're on the ground level, but far our of the world map. Whenever you open the map in one of them, it goes to Lumbridge for some reason. Sometimes you can see other areas from another in this plane, such as we see with the Corporeal Beast's lair.

If you knew anything about development, you would know exactly why they do it.

Height levels are messy. Its much easier to use one plane and have it all layed out instead of going up and down.

You're wrong too. There are height levels, but most dungeons are on level 0 (ground level). Level -1 is underwater (I don't believe you can "go" there) and levels 1 and above are higher up.

  • Never trust anyone. You are always alone, and betrayal is inevitable.
  • Nothing is safe from the jaws of the decompiler.

As for the level 107 wilderness, surely it isn't just an accident that they decided to put it there? After all, they could have placed it anywhere - lots of stuff can be done with programming. It wouldn't even need to be explained.

I was just about to mention the whole -1 level thing (they brought it up in the Hd update for water, i think)

It does annoy the hell out of me when people call Jagex lazy though, its such an unthought out comment imo.

Theres a fine line between not listening and not caring,

I like to think I walk this line every day.

Pinning blame on Jagex is like trying to put pants on an old man.

You both know he needs them, but he'll just keep dancing around, avoiding them at all costs.
