iPod Touch stuck in recovery mode?

So I was downloading the new software update for my iPod Touch, and my iPod had a picture show up of a USB cord with an arrow pointing to iTunes. I looked this up on the apple site and it said something about restoring your iPod completely within iTunes. The problem is when I plug my iPod in I get a pop-up telling me 'Windows needs to install driver software for your Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode) and tells me to insert the disc I got with the iPod. As far as i'm aware, I never got a disc with the iPod and don't own one, so I cannot do this.

What should I do?

my ipod does this too. Try using a freinds mac or jailbreaking it then restoring.

DK drops (solo/LS): 66 hatchets, 14 archer rings, 13 berserker rings, 17 warrior rings, 12 seerculls, 13 mud staves, 7 seers rings

QBD drops: 1 kite, 2 visages, 4 dragonbone kits, 3 effigies, lots of crossbow parts

CR vs. CLS threads always turn into discussions about penis size.

It's not called a Compensation Longsword for nothing.

I've sent a 12k combat mission to have Aiel assassinated (poor bastard isn't even Pincers-tier difficulty).

This happened to me about a year ago. I tried restoring it on a Mac and on a Windows PC and nothing happened, it didn't even do anything when I connected it to the mains to charge so I resigned myself to taking it to my local Apple store. They couldn't fix it either and had no idea what caused it so in the end they just gave me a new one.

Of course this was a year ago, but it might be worth taking it to a nearby Apple store. If you can't, scout out some Apple forums and they might have a solution for it.

Hope it gets sorted! :^_^:

Alright i've made a post on the official iPod forums, and if there is no solution I haven't had it for a year yet so I guess i'll get my dad to drive me to the city and take it to the apple store. Thanks for the advice.

This is for the iPhone, but as iPod touch is basically a phoneless iPhone I'll assume it works for that too.

Make sure the device is NOT plugged into your computer, then hold the power button and the home button down until the phone resets (ie it shuts down and then starts back up again). Now release the power button, and continue to hold the home button down until the device boots.

Note that this may not work if your iPod touch entered recovery mode because of an error. In that case, you need to do a restore. If that is the case (and I'm assuming it is) you can download the firmware bundle from the apple site. When you go to do the restore, on a PC hold down the shift key and press the restore button which will let you browse to the firmware bundle. I'd recommend doing this instead of letting iTunes download it for you, because my parents tried to update their iPhones this way and iTunes totally screwed it up and I had to help them get it restored...

Yeah I tried that, it doesn't work. I guess I need to restore it but I can't because my PC says there are no drivers.

I'd take it to an Apple store - book an appointment at a Genius Bar. If none of the solutions put forward on this thread have worked, then it's the best possible thing to do. If it is still under warranty they'l probably replace it (if they don't have a solution for your problem).

The no drivers thing means either you need iTunes on your computer (the apple mobile device driver is included) or worse the driver is screwed up. This happened to me after I tried updating to the latest iTunes and took me friggin' forever to figure out how to fix it. I think the new iTunes had a problem with some versions of Windows or something like that.

Apple did release a newer version of iTunes a few days ago (9.2.1), there may be a few bugs if you have updated iTunes.

I only updated to that after it happened in an attempt to fix it, so I don't think it was that.

Sorry for the double post, I've fixed it. Plugged it into my mum's laptop which I forgot had some ancient version of iTunes. After it's done restoring and I plug it back into my PC, would you guys recommend I reinstall iTunes or something to prevent it happening again?

Yes, but make sure that you uninstall ALL of the itunes components before reinstalling as this is where I ran into trouble and wound up having to do a system restore to resolve it... <_<

This includes iTunes, Quicktime, Bonjour, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Apple Application Support.

You may want to install an older version because as I mentioned earlier the latest version has some issues with some versions of Windows. You can find older versions at websites like oldapps.com

Installing iTunes automatically installs all of that, though some older versions lack some of it. Just make sure none of those exist in add/remove programs before you reinstall.

You could try putting the iPod into DFU mode and seeing if it'll recognize it after that. If it still will not, I would uninstall and then reinstall the latest version (9.2.1) of iTunes and try again. If that still does not work, I would ring up Applecare (providing you still have phone support; within 90 days of purchase if you did not buy the extended warranty).

EDIT: 3,000 posts.
