What is Magic : The Gathering?

Magic: The Gathering (colloquially Magic or MTG) is a collectible card game created by mathematics professor Richard Garfield and introduced in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast. Magic is the first example of the modern collectible card game genre and still thrives today, with an estimated six million players in over seventy countries. [1] Magic can be played by two or more players each using a deck of printed cards or a deck of virtual cards through the Internet-based Magic: The Gathering Online or third-party programs.

Each game represents a battle between powerful wizards, known as "planeswalkers", who use the magical spells, items, and fantastic creatures depicted on individual Magic cards to defeat their opponents. Although the original concept of the game drew heavily from the motifs of traditional fantasy role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, the gameplay of Magic bears little resemblance to pencil-and-paper adventure games, while having substantially more cards and more complex rules than many other card games.

An organized tournament system and a community of professional Magic players has developed, as has a secondary market for Magic cards. Magic cards can be valuable due to their rarity and utility in game play.

I'll update this with set lists, general decks, FAQS, learn to plays and more.

For now, discuss! Do you play? What deck do you run? Personally, I have a white life gain deck.

I used to play a lot 10 or 11 years ago. Still have a bunch of the old cards but I don't play anymore.

Looking at the sets I think I started around the Urza's saga. I do have some of the older cards too from Arabian nights and stuff. I had the Battle Royale and Deckmasters sets too.

Meh I used to have a lot of fun with it just because a lot of my friends played.

I'm a big fan of MTG, because of the complexity and creativity involved in playing with it. Around here there's a huge community of people who hold pre-release and release events, and they're simply awesome.

Right now I'm experimenting with a Green/Black ramp deck, with Garruks and Lilianas. It's mighty fun. It'll be a sad and a happy day to see Jund finally be mostly rotated out of Standard.

yugioh is better tbh.

Never played Magic, actually. It's a few years before my time. When I moved to my neighborhood, all the kids were over pokemon and started on yugioh, so I did that instead. Oh well.

99 dungeoneering achieved, thanks to everyone that celebrated with me!

Magic beats the [cabbage] out of both of them.

And I have 2 green decks, one Elf and the other Wyrms. Very fun, very deadly. Im also building a Darksteel deck. I need more Collossuses :(

All my cards are old kinda too haha. I havnt bought new ones for my green decks in about 5-6 years?

Woah, long time man. First started arount the Mirrodin block though I remember having some of the scourge cards. Yeah, this was very popular when I was in year 8/9. Was fun.

I liked MTG untill I realized you couldn't use old card playing down the line.

consumerism ruined my fun

Pretty much. I stopped right around Timespiral. Wizards are [bleep]. [bleep] for money. Play drafts if you can't afford to shell out money every time a new block is released. [Every year or so...]

Magic is basically like yugioh and pokemon for older people who like to think.

Lol I was the kid who started Yugioh at my school. It was all pokemon, and then I got into Yugioh and everyone tried making fun of me, but then they saw it and within like two weeks my whole school was obsessed with it...I quickly grew out of that fad.

On topic, I used to play a long time ago, haven't played since then.

Magic was too expensive for my taste. I'm more of a yu-gi-oh guy. Even play on the online betas

Heh yeah, it was pretty popular among me and my friends during 7th and 8th grade. (god that is such a long time ago now... lol).

I still remember the joke set getting released (uncracked I think it was?) and me and my friends being all over that set. Led to some pretty funny moments such as me rushing to my friends room to steal a pair of his tan pants to wear. (a card deemed I had them or else I was in trouble).

That's kind of lame. Granted it's not like you need new cards to just play with friends but still, pretty dumb. The entire concept of a TCG is generally revolved around people buying as many cards as possible haha.

Honestly if I knew people who played I would maybe start up again (cards are all at my parents house tho) but can't be bothered to buy new cards or anything dumb lol. I was never that good at it even though I was a beast at building decks.

Yeah, unhinged and unglued, those were hilarious Some of them had completely ridiculous rules, made the game so much more fun.

Yeah, the thing with draft is, you pay maybe $20 with 30 or 40 other people, you get the normal 20 lands and a whole bunch of standards and boosters to make a deck with. Then you just play and at the end of it all you get to keep the cards and possibly win more if you come top 5. Drafting way to go IMO.

Haha same, though most of my friends have grown out of it. Still had a lot of fun though. I've got my cards in a box somewhere in a closet. But yeah, that's half the fun, building the decks and then just playing and tweaking. Aaaah good times.

Gah, I feel like such a nerd now.

I just want to grab a card called 'Ashnod's Coupon' (Target player gets you target drink. Errata: You pay any costs for the drink.), which will probably help in establishing beer rounds.

Oh, then there's that combo that gets you unlimited drinks. Yeah, Unhinged and Unglued are awesome, I really hope they come up with a third 'un' set.

I think the most ridiculous card from that set was the one that deemed you tear up a card and then throw it at the opponents cards. If pieces landed on them they lost the card XD.

We always pussed out and tore up paper or something.

My brother plays a Sliver deck, and has a green deck too I believe. I love the art on the cards but I've never bought any, I'm pretty good considering I don't own my own deck (beat my bro a couple times with a not-really-deck deck).

Haha yeah. That's the one I remember specifically. Google tells me it was called Chaos Confetti.

I have a few cards, but I've never actually played the game (I read the online rulebook for 5 minutes and I was stumped at the part about the library or something, which I think is the deck?). I was also pretty disappointed with how WotC handled the market here, so I've never really taken a big interest in MtG anymore.

  • 4 years later...

I'm going to necro this thread because MTG is becoming more and more popular nowadays and I recently picked up the game again after a 7 year hiatus.

What formats do you all play?

I play Modern and Legacy, Melira/Angel Pod in the former and UWr Miracles in the latter. Working on building BUG Delver in Legacy as well.

I play casual occasionally, and draft occasionally. I dumped a grand or two into it over the course of 2011-2013 but I can't afford to get back into it now. Looks like a good block though
