Sun Gazing - Possible to live off sunlight?

Yes, this sounds really absurd, and I don't know how it could be possible, but it's interesting nonetheless. Here's the post from another forum.

Two months back, I attended a talk by Hira Ratan Manek ( HRM) who claims to live on Sunlight and Water.( without any solid food) for past nine years. His calim has been verified by a team of Indian medical doctors and also by a prof.. at U.Penn, Philladelphia, USA under he funding from NASA ( http://www.solarhealing.com)

According to him, sunlight has all the nutritians requied to sustain and heal the body. There are thousands of people practices his method of sungazing ( looking at sun directly with open eye at sunrise or sunset ( when UV index is below 2) and increment the view time in 10 sec. daily till it reaches a total of 45 minutes..

On yahoo and MSN groups on the subject, there are 100s of testimonials of sungazers claiming healing in various mental/physical problems.. It seems like there is a good corlation between the practise and the healing but the scieintific explanations is missing.

I have started practising the method myself with positive results ( also no damage to eyesight so far after 5 minutes of sun gazing ) but I can not find explanations on why?

I thought this is probably a corrrect forum where someone may have some good explanation for the link between sunlight and healing. ( There are several articles on the subject on internet like

Wow...that is absolutely fascinating. I want this to hit something like Time magazine and see what mainstream has to say about it!

If this actually works for everyone, it could end world hunger and starvation. What I don't get is how the sun can provide you with actual hard concrete literal nutrients your body needs to break down for different proccesses. Does the sun have an imaginary nutrition label with all 100%'s? :|

I'm really surprised I haven't, and more people haven't heard about this. I mean it seems like a huge breakthrough, but the guy has been doing it for 9 years. Maybe there's a ton of money involved. I mean, if humans technically don't need food, imagine what that would do to the food industry in some areas. Maybe there's a few reasons like that why we're not hearing about it.

I need very extensive, informative, and scientific research before I ever stare at the sun. And when I say very, I mean more information then I could ever care to read.

This is the way the world ends. Look at this [bleep]ing shit we're in man. Not with a bang, but with a whimper. And with a whimper, I'm splitting, Jack.

water only contains hidrogen and oxygen and sunlight does not contain nutrents. plants only use sunlight for photosynthis they dont get nutrents from it because you can not make matter without massive amounts of energy.

Well apparently the sun provides things that science hasn't explained yet.

By the way, wouldn't this make humans (and I suppose all animals?) autotrauphs if we really can live off the sun? I mean a guy did it and was watched even for 100+ days so it is possible. Maybe there's some technique that's really hard to learn. That could be the catch.

Well I'm sure that given certain skin properties a human can live off of the sun by gathering it's energy. Like a plant. Perhaps this case was a huge mutation. I'm sure with genetic modification we can create a humanoid capable of synthesis and immune to UV rays. :P

weird, very intersting my luck i would look at the sun at the wrong time and burn my retina up and go blind 8)

Perhaps sunlight exposure promotes the production of various vitamins?

I've only done a semester-long course on biology at the tenth grade level so far, thus my knowledge of the subject is rather limited, but the chemicals provided by ATP (a process required in photosynthesis) are not mentioned in the photosynthesis equation. This, to me at least, suggests that there are possible chemicals from the sun that we are unaware of. Or perhaps photosynthesis is possible in humans ... in that the pores on our skin are capable of absorbing sunlight, and with oxygen and water, we are able to produce simple sugars (namely Glucose) to sustain life.

Very interesting, but once again, I'm fairly uninformed on the topic so I may be more naive to information like this than others.

do jamba juces count as solid food?

iv livved for almost a month of jamba juces and other smothies.

Well Jamba is just a bunch of fruits blended together. It's just like eating a bunch of fruit.. and sometimes some sorbets. :D

This would be GREAT if scientists could find out how this was possible.

The Amazing Randi would have a field day with these quacks :D

Its all a load of bs and pseudo science and these guys are making a mint out of gullible people.

If its real then I suggest these guys go for the $1,000,000 prize from the JREF to prove paronormal/supernatural "powers" exist

edit: looks like TAR already debunks one of the guys

http://www.randi.org/jr/071103.html

Here at the JREF we get all sorts of claims from people who say they don't eat, ever, and we stack those claims with the fly-by-flapping-my-arms and make-women-crazy-by-ESP presumptions. One guy tested in California a few years back was discovered to be sneaking out to McDonalds in the wee hours of the morning, though he claimed he only inhaled the burger aroma to stay alive

Well apart from being possibly dangerous I definately don't see how this would even be viable.

All that the sun is emitting is electro-magnetic radiation, cosmic rays and solar wind. The solar wind and cosmic rays are protected by our atmosphere but the electro-magnetic radiation (infrared, light, ultraviolet light etc) do not contain nutrition. Plants and cyanobacteria are the only organisms which can convert energy out of the electromagnetic radiation using chlorophyll and we don't have chlorophyll. The plants only get nutrients from the soil. By saying that it only works by looking at the sun suggests we have chlorophyll in our eyes and only in our eyes; we don't.

THANK YOU! It looks like NO ONE bothered to look at my link on Vitamin D production due to sunlight exposure....

bacteria in ur large intestines produce vitamins as well...

but the point is, vitamins dont have calories. and no calories=no energy=no cellular respiration=even less enery=death. you cannot live off of vitamins alone.

plants and some other autotrophs are the only organisms that can convert sunlight to chemical energy using photosynthesis or other means.

starvation and direct sun gazing to improve ur health? sounds more like a formula for anorexia and blindness to me. :?

Dont know about the person living compleatly off it, but humans do need sunlight. Everyone needs atlest 10 minutes of sunlight a day to stay healthy. It creates VD (Like smithie said) as well as some more, but i cant remmber. But i dont think enough to sustain the body.
