Meamzed's guide to Dagannoth Kings; Mage, hybrid, 2.5 hybrid, Tribrid and Cannon Tribrid.

However, Before we begin, let us examine the Three Dagannoth kings themselves; What are they, where are they, and what are their weaknesses and strengths.

The Dagannoth kings are three level 303 Dagannoths, and reside deep within Waterbirth Dungeon.

Waterbirth dungeon, released in 2005, was Jagex's most combat triangle based update that year, and perhaps ever, contains a number of high level monsters, including range dagannoths, rock crabs, rock lobsters, melee dagannoths and, most importantly, The Dagannoth kings every one of them level 303.

These three Dagannoths embody the logic's the Dungeon was based on, the combat triangle. Easy king uses one style, and is weak only to the opposite style.

Dagannoth supreme, the king nearest to the ladder which leads into the king's lair, uses range attacks, which have a max hit of around 300, and is VERY weak to melee. This king, while not particularly dangerous by itself, is very dangerous when you have it+Dagannoth prime, the mager attacking you.

20110811165544.png

Dagannoth Prime, the most Dangerous king, uses magical attacks, which have a max hit of about 610!

While it rarely hits that high, it is very accurate at hitting into the mid/high 300's. For this reason, you should ALWAYS pray magic whenever he is alive, or about to spawn(unless you are in a safe spot, more on this later, i promise). Prime is reasonably weak to range.

20110811165042.png

Dagannoth Rex, the least dangerous king, uses melee, and maxes at about 300. He is Incredibly weak to magic attacks, and can be hit with even -50 mage offence with ease. In addition, he isn't very accurate with melee, and therefore should only be prayed against when none of the other kings are alive.

Spinolyp's, while these aren't actually Dagannoth kings XD, they do inhabit the king's lair, round the edges, using range/mage attacks on you. While only being level 76, they are reasonably dangerous, as they can hit up to about 100 with either their mage/range attcks. In addition, their attacks poison, and their mage attack, whenever it successfully hits you, drains one prayer point. For this reason, mage prayer is useful against them, also, you also NEED anti poison's, or an anti-poison tokens.

All of the kings have a wander range which doesn't completely encompass the entire lair, which, can be invaluable. For instance; in some spots, prime will never attack you, nor will supreme, but rex may. These spots can be used so safely kill the kings.

*A note on Dagannoth kings weaknesses. While rex and supreme are incredibly weak to mage and melee, respectively, prime is only somewhat weak to range, for this, you should bring ranged armour to increase your accuracy vs prime, where as you don't need any mage/melee boosting gear for rex/supreme.

On dungeoneering rewards.

First; Chaotics. At dks, chaotics can be invaluable, but, in particular, rapier. Rapier is the #1 best weapon for killing supreme, no matter what. Its fast, and accurate and very damaging against supreme, especially with the boost of overloads/Slayer helm. Cls/maul can be used as substitutes, but I don't really suggest them, especially not maul.

Chaotic crossbow; good for prime, but you don't really need this, as its accuracy boost is merely handy, instead of incredible.

Chaotic staff; useful for Rex, but not really necessary again, those with a smaller budget would be better off with a staff of light.

Chaotic shields: While I haven't Tried Eagle eye kite-shield or Farseer kite-shield, I cant really imagine they'de be better than a chaotic kite-shield, as the accuracy boosts they offer aren't worth the loss in defence. Chaotic kiteshield is great here, as it offers very high range and melee defence.

Other dungeoneering rewards which are good for dks:

Celestial surgebox. This is an invaluable item, and you should always use it when killing rex, unless you are using ancients. It can be filled with with however many air surge casts as you would like, and to access these spells simply by equipping the celestial surgebox. You should bring other elemental runes to use higher level surges also. However, you shouldn't use this primarily, unless you are maging only, as it only mage defence, and no melee/range defences.

Arcane Stream necklace: Adds a 15% damage bonus to your hits, has a mage accuracy bonus of +14 and is very useful against rex.

Anti poison token: While I haven't used this, I imagine it to be somewhat useful,as it prevents you being poisoned while you have it equipped. Note that IT DOES NOT CURE POISON, IT ONLY PREVENTS YOU BEING POISONED. If you don't have a chaotic kiteshield/ely or divine/csb, you might consider it, but, imo, it's somewhat useless if you have a tort/yak.

Rigour/Augury: While I haven't tested these, I would image they might be useful on prime/rex, if you don't have 95 prayer. If you have turmoil, use it, soul split is invaluable for healing off of rex, or soul split flashing on supreme.

Now, down to business!

[spoiler=Maging]

Requirements for magic: Best to worse

95>90>85>80 magic

90>80>70 defence.

70+ Constitution

90>80>70 ranging(not an absolute, but useful against prime)

96>88>79>68>52>41>0 Summoning.

95>70>43 prayer.

90>80>70 Attack and strength.(again, not an absoloute, simply useful for supreme)

70 Runecrafting, for Celestial Surgebox, if you have the tokens for it.

This is the simplest method, and involves the killing of only one Dagannoth king, Dagannoth Rex.

As you should know, if you have read my earlier section on rex, he is the meleer, and is weak to magic.

When I say weak to magic, I mean INCREDIBLY weak to magic. you can hit him with almost any negative mage offence bonus, and with almost any spell, however, only a few spells are very practical against him.

These spells are:

Claws of guthix; using the charge spell, which, when wearing the guthix cape, has a max hit of 300 without boosts; you need to be wearing a guthix staff/void knight mace to use this spell, and have to have unlocked it at the mage training arena, in 55 wilderness.

You need lvl 60 magic to use claws of Guthix, and lvl 80 magic to cast charge, which increases your max hit from 200 to 300 for about 5 minutes.

Wind surge:This spell has a max hit of 220 without boosts, and requires level 80 magic to cast.

Water surge:This spell has a max hit of 240 without boosts and requires level 85 magic to cast.

Earth surge: This spell has a max hit of 260 without boosts, and requires level 90 magic to cast.

Fire surge:This spell has a max hit of 280 without boosts, and requires level 95 magic to cast.

*Blood barrage:This spell has a max hit of 290 without boosts, and requires level 92 magic to cast.

*Ice barrage:This spell has a max hit of 300 without boosts, and requires level 94 magic to cast.

*These spells should only be used with a yak, and blood barrage with soul split on rex.

Realistically, these spells are the only spells you should be using, and only the surges/cog*(claws of guthix) are the only ones you should be using while maging, as the barrages are very expensive, and should only be used while tribriding/2.5 bridding/cannon tribridding.

Damage boosting items: While maging, you should be aiming to increase the amount of damage your spells hit for killing rex faster.

Gear: Each slot has been arranged from best to worst.

MAGE GEAR.

**For if you are using guthans.

***For if you are using Claws of guthix

If you have soul split, your familiar's set up should be 4 prayer potions, 1 brew, 1 super restore; repeated for your familiars rows, if not, have 2 prayer potions, 1 Saradomin brew(4), 1 super restore.

A note on the guthan's set: If you do not have 79 summoning at least, or soul split, you should use this set, and heal off of the spinolyps along the edge of the lair.

Below are two Mage gear screenshots, from the best set up to the worse. Unfortunately, I do not have cash for torva/virtus, so I cannot show the set-up for it.

20110808155954.png

Yak set up, the Csb is filled with 3 thousand air surge casts, and i should've had 30k fire runes in my invent ;)

The crossbow is for prime, in the off chance he should get on you, and the rapier is for killing supreme, elysian is for switching to during kills, and killing prime/supreme. Brews are emergency food.

20110808160000.png

Your antipoison MUST BE P++, as nothing else lasts as long.

Tort set up, pretend the yak pouch in my invent is a tort pouch ;). This set up can also be used with bunyips, or fruit bats. guthans also works, somewhat with this set up.

Right, know you have an idea of the set ups, lets get down to the actual killing of the kings.

As you already know, the kings reside in their lair, deep within waterbirth dungeon. I would advise having someone show you down to near their lair a few times, so you get the hang of it. to get down, you need at least two people to open the initial pair of doors, in the first level of the dungeon. The method, as some of you will know, is to stand on the two pads at the doors, and then open them. Then, run to the south set of doors, open those, and have one person run back through the northern doors, to the barricades. These barricades, invulnerable to combat styles when facing them, are held up by a stand which can be damaged from the opposite barricade. However, the stands are invulnerable to magic, and so much be ranged(or meleed). See the tip.it monster hunting guide on dks for more information.

Once down near the lair, you face the problem of getting past the two kings you won't be killing, Prime, and supreme.

You can use melee to kill them, or try and run round the edge of the arena, as not to get their attention, however, once a king is on you, it will never stop attacking, unless someone else goes near it, or,, they die.(or you do)

Enter, praying magic and piety, kill supreme, and then, drag rex to one of the safe spot methods shown below. DO NOT TAKE MAGE PRAY OFF. Once rex is dead, move to one of the areas safe from supreme, and range prime until dead with rapid, or long range(you may have to longrange), from now on, focus on not entering prime's wander range, and just on luring rex into his safe spot.

Continue killing, banking hides+bones(if you have a yak) and picking up stackable drops such as ore, runes, and the like. You should always be praying mage, unless you have more than 700 lps, as prime+a spinolyp can 1 hit you when you are under 700. Always pray magic while luring, and try not to lure rex if he and another king are walking in towards each other, as you can sometimes be lured into prime/supreme's wander range while rex walks.

Luring rex: This is VERY important, as it allows you to safely attack rex, without him attack you. to do so, there are manny methods of luring rex. I will show two here, but there are dozens.

The first lure: This is the lure every beginning dker learns. Its the simplest, btu also, one of the most dangerous, as prime getting on you is a very big threat here.

20110808221959.png

Stand around there somewhere, praying mage, and attack rex once he spawns. Once he's after you, stand there, let him hit you once,(flick melee pray on) then run south to here.

20110809144827.png

If he's still hitting you with melee, run further south, to here.

20110809144844.png

You can also lure north from step 1 to here.

20110809145044.png

As you become more and more accomplished at dks, you will learn the lures off by heart, however, i don't really advise the above lure(s) because they are too close to prime, which is a real pain, as it can get you killed.

For this reason, i prefer the below lure, as it is incredibly safe, and you should almost never get any of the kings on you.

Step 1: lure 2: stand here, and do not stand on the seaweed, or go any further west than it, as this can get supreme on you; Not go more than 3 squares north, exept during luring, as prime may get on you.

20110809145942.png

Standing in the above spot, attack rex once, then stand back on that square, let rex hit you once, then run to here:20110809145951.png

If rex should keep attacking you with melee, run back to the spot near the seaweed, then back to the safe spot.

This is the best lure, in my opinion, as there is almost no chance of being attacked by prime/supreme, and it's close to rex's spawn point.

Now, as you know the lures, let us direct our attention to another thing; what to do if prime/supreme gets on you. If it is prime, there are a few things you can do.

1:ignore him, just pray mage and hope someone comes down the ladder and distracts him, however, this isn't the most practical method, as people dont often come down, and if your prayer drops, you will be killed unless you tab.

If you are on curses, deflects will eventually kill him, however, you won't get whatever he drops.

2:kill him; by standing in, or behind, the follow places.

20110809150728.png

Long range him if you have to, and kill rex whenever he spawns, killing prime in between kills.

3:you can go up the ladder, and try and sneak back down without prime/supreme getting on you, or you can x-log(see later).

4: you can teleport out; if you have no prayer, or are near the end of your trip anyways.

Supreme, what to do if he gets on you.

well, unfortunately, unlike prime, you cannot kill supreme from any great distance, as he is nearly invulnerable to range/magic. What to do depends on a few things. Methods to get him off you are below

1:xlog, if it is only him on you. (more on xlogging later, i promise ;) )

2:if you have a fair bit of food, and feel competant, kill him with melee. This will get prime on you, and so you should pray magic, kill supreme, going up the ladder if rex gets on you. Once he is dead, start killing prime from the prime safe spots above, or kill rex then start on prime.

3:tab, if you have no prayer or are almost done your trip.

4:ignore him, praying range and carefully avoiding prime. If you are on deflects, they will eventually kill him.

5:you CAN, very slowly, kill supreme via ranging, or maging him. this will take a very long time (10-15 minutes), be extra careful not to get prime on you.

What to do if two, or more kings get on you, (prime+supreme or, (prime/supreme/rex). if rex has only just died, try killing supreme, or, if he is up and walking, try and get round the other side of supreme, where rex probably won't see you. Or, if all three are on you, you can try and kill supreme anyway, (not advised), or go out the ladder and go back down in a few seconds, aiming to get only one king on you.

Alternatively, you can go up the ladder, hop to a world with hybrids on it, and xlog in a rex safe spot, however, this can be dangerous if they lure the kings on you.

MAGING WITH HYBRIDS.

Whilst maging rex for hybrids(who kill prime/supreme), maging becomes a lot safer, as you don't have to worry about prime/supreme getting on you as much, however, you have to make sure rex doesn't get on the hybrids, and if he does, lure him off.

Additional tips.

Play it safe, stay about 700 lps.

Pray mage at all times, unless you are in a safe spot.

You want to be using the highest pop world possible, as this makes rex respawn faster, therefor, more kph, you can use xlogging to get to a highest population world.

Dont try for heroic's, tab if you think you will die.

If prime gets on you, ALWAYS prioritize praying mage before eating, or tabbing out.

Stay in the "BURSTINGLOBS" friends chat, as they can bless you should you die.

XLOGGING; HOW TO DO IT, AND WHAT TO USE IT FOR.

xlogging, in base, is making runescape think you have dc'd, while, in actuality, you have purposefully exited runescape.

To do so, simply close runescape, whilst having the max hps+mage prayer on, in a rex safe spot.

This can be used to get prime/supreme off you, or to top to a better world for killing rex.

However, always remember the world you were on, incase you die.

Death whilst maging; At some point, for whatever reason, you WILL die at dagannoth kings. Should you die, the first thing you should do is enter the "burstinglobs" friends chat, and spam:Need bless dks w(?). Whilst spamming this in there, grab yourself a "looting invent", an inventory of gear on which you can get your stuff back. Ex=20110813145601.png If your tomb is near the middle of the "arena", you will need mroe brews. If you don't have overloads, bring more brews, and bring a damage spec weapon, as supreme is going to be alot harder to kill, and you will take a lot of damage.

Invariably, you will have to hop to w66 to get through the doors, only do this once you are blessed, and rune down to the lobsters. Once down there, hop back to the world you tomb is on, and run down to the lair, go down, kill supreme, and run to your tomb. If your tomb is in one of the mage safespots, run round the edge once supreme is dead, trying NOT to get rex on you.

Loot your stuff, and then tab out, or continue your trip if you like.

Rewards from maging: Rex drops Dragon hatchets, warrior rings, and berserker rings, along with rare drop tables, and noted ore. All kings have about a 1/50 drop rate, so maxing 35 kills per hr, you should get a drop about every 2 hrs.

20110812001013.png

[spoiler=Hybridding]

Hybridding, while being easier than tribridding, is certainly somewhat harder than maging, and requires more attention than maging. Also, you need a mage to sucessfully hybrid, in order to get rex. The basics of hybriding are as follos=you kill prime and supreme.

However, you don't spend quite a much on runes, so you are almost 100% guaranteed profit.

First of all, gear, and requirements.

Requirements:

95>90>80 Attack.

95>90>80 Strength

95>90>80 Defence

95>90>85 Ranged

96>88>79>69 Summoning (uni/yak HIGHLY reccommended)

96>94>0 Herblore (overloads/super prayers)

*Only if on slayer task

**If using Guthan's to help with healing, STRONGLY reccommended if you don't have 79 summoning

*** Only if on a slayer task

**** Only if on slayer task, i would advise this, as it easily out damages claws on task, and is probably better without a task.

***** You may want to bring this as a cape switch if you are using expensive bolts.

The Basic's of Hybridding.

As a hybrid, you will be focusing on killing two kings, Dagannoth Prime and Dagannoth Supreme, using switches of range and melee equipment. The third king, Dagannoth rex, will be killed by your Mager(see later for where to get one easily)

I'd really really recommend you work on formatting, but I understand you got to get all your info in there now first.

I'd recommend Bandos platebody over Verac's brassard anyday, and I'm not convinced vigour is really work using compared to, say, ROW, onyx (i) or a cheap dstone ring (i).

I'd also recommend rune bolts over broad if you're not cannoning, or the use of a handcannon or Karil's crossbow. Sagaie might be decent if you snipe Prime from a distance, as they are very cheap and hit about as hard as a handcannon at max range (they are also one-handed).

Finally, I wouldn't use Torva if you're only maging as ss should basically cover your healing (with eee, fish drops etc.) and the degrade just isn't worth the small defence increase. LP increase isn't really useful unless you're healing primarily with brews/uni.

thanks for posting, nice to see a reply ;), i forgot to add in the maging section, but i use veracs for two reasoned:1: it has reasonable range defence, and, more importantly, it has good prayer bonus, which, is very important for maging.

enchanted rings would be better i would imagine, but, i don't personally have the patience to get them, and having to have only 90% spec for ee is useful.

on ranging, i personally find karils xbow to be very innaccurate. I'll have to try rune bolts, but if you can afford them, you might as well use diamonds.

on formatting: I'm new to writing guides, as this is my first one ;), also im not sure how to do hide tabs >.> despite 3 years on these forums.

For hide tags, you will want to use:

Aside from hide tags, Very good guide, seeing as it is your first!

To improve, try splitting it into seperate sections, with snazzy titles.

If I wasnt a dks veteran, Id certainly use this though!

Formatting is such a huge issue when writing guides in the end a well formatted guide will help more people and receive better reviews than a information full and badly formatted one. The beginning of your guide is just a wall of text - with some good information in - but still a wall of text. Setting your guide out so it is easy to read and accessible will make it far more likely people will read it.

Perhaps you could get a friend to insert the relevant formatting etc.. On a word document for you or something and then C&P it onto tif.

Perhaps a more detailed guide on how to enter the DK lair solo? That's the hardest part of maging imo. Of course if DKs are even more crowded than they were when I still played it's just a matter of going to a taken world and world hop there. And you might want to add that you will get crashed if you're not a high level with claws or fire surge.

The best way to avoid crashers is having a slayer task and solo maging honestly isn't worth it without a task exactly because of this.

Maybe add some short videos showing the entry for each method aswell as luring points and places you do not want to stand ect. Finding where to go seems to be the biggest problem for new dk's slayers and pictures don't always do them justice.
