Tutorial

So a few things then, I have recently started a new account and have just gone through the tutorial, they use a task system based around Taverly and Burnthorpe, altogether I did 68 tasks before being able to really venture out into the world on my own. My complaints;

1. It's not in Lumbridge, which is just odd.

2. It is far to long.

3. Although I do plan on going P2P, I do not see the need to heavily go into members skills.

4. I did 4 quests, why does questing have to be involved in the tutorial, although I did do The Death of Chilvary, which I suspect wasn't needed to progress.

I just think it was a bit silly that I had to do so much before I could get out and start, rant over!

Keepin' it real since '93. #saintsfc

The tutorial does have issues, but some of your points are kinda unfounded as 'problems.'

1) It not being Lumbridge does not matter. All told Lumbridge did not even serve as a tutorial for the majority of the games existence, most of that time was Tutorial Island. But ultimately the location is meaningless other than returning player nostalgia.

4) Perhaps because, like skills, quests are a HUGE part of Runescape. Plus none of the 3 quests actually come in to the first bit of the tutorial which is kinda the 'mandatory' bit they come at the stage where it suggests things to do but you can freely wander off and ignore it.

Also you can leave the tutorial at any time, in fact to do DoC you clearly did leave the tutorial as it happens exclusively in the Burthorpe/Taverly area whilst DoC is off near edgeville.

On the point of 1 and 4, I agree with Sy.

2) Tutorial Island was just as long back in 2005 as the current tutorial is now. Only difference here is that Tutorial Island was it's own location with a tutorial feel, so you didn't get the urge to go off into the world as bad as you do now, since your world is a tutorial. Now the tutorial takes places in Burthope/Traverely with other players who are moving faster than you are. It makes you anxious to go out and do something rather than learn some basics.

3) We've talked about this in a suggestion thread for EOC (can't remember which) and I generally agree going into members skill so earlier is too much. In fact, going into all the skills so heavy as the current tutorial does is too much. I think they should supply the basics for survival (this is how you light a fire, this is how you cook raw meat on it, this is how you fish for more food) with later tutorials showing a bit more advance stuff that appear as you interact with the world (Did you know you can also cook on a range? Would you like to see how? Did you know you can make your own armor? Would you like to review that? You're becoming a better farmer. Would you like to try farming something bigger?)

4) Some of those quest actually work also tutorials for Herblore, Summoning, etc which I think is a nice way of switching up teaching about new skills.

I would have to agree Lumbridge was a better starting area (so simple, with absolutely everything you need for low level training in plain sight and very on-the-nose) although with the Battle Of Lumbridge currently going on, I imagine most new players would generally head towards the flashing lights. I would have to agree the tutorial is far too long, and the fact that it's a chore to turn off / get out of the tutorial is another flaw i completely agree with you about.

The fact it gets into member's skill is really a matter of preference.... do you show new players a taste of all the available content (and risk overwhelming them?) or do you show them a fraction of it and risk them leaving after not being impressed.

It really doesn't make any difference if the tutorial is in lumbridge or not.

The reason the tutorial is so long is because it takes you through each and every skill which in my opinion is a good thing.

The quests are a big part of runescape since they actually differ from quests in other games where the quests are like kill x things also 2 of them sort of work like tutorials for herblore and summoning which i think is nice.

I disagree, I never found tutorial island that long or hard to complete. Honestly, that was why they revamped it because at the time everyone was kicking up a fuss over the autoing that was going on.  Maybe I'm semi-old school, I'm just mad at how simplified everything is appearing and the million notifications I get now.

Location? Really? You can get the exact same learning experience from either, its a minor factor and shouldn't affect anything.
