If you like cheesy comic based television (ie: The Cape; Arrow) you'll feel right at home watching Colbie Smoulders and other para Avanger universe types tear stuff up in this new (ish) TV series.

I for one can't wait for more

Make that two. I really enjoyed the first episode as well. Fitz/Simmons are hilarious when they get rambling back and forth.

Lol new (ish)?

The pilot aired less than a week ago, how much newer can a show be?

I liked it so far, has the usual slightly awkward chemistry and rough edges a pilot has, but shows a lot of promise.

I wonder how much Colbie will be in it, I could see her being around a lot more in season 2 onwards, if it lasts.

In the comics flying cars have been a staple of the SHIELD arsenal since the 60's (there was even one in Captain America at the Stark Expo). As long as they don't use it too much (or, ideally, ever again), then I see it as nothing more than a nod to the history of the story universe.

I watched episode two with my kids this morning (I told them I'd wait so we could watch it together) and we loved it. Lots of humor and action, and it's good to see the team starting to gel. You can really see Joss Whedon's influence as well, it's almost like Firefly in the Marvel universe...my inner geek squealed with glee just writing that.

I'm wondering what the overarching storyline/villian is going to be though. You know, something to tie the whole season together. Is it going to continue to be The Rising Tide, or is something more terrifying waiting in the wings?

At this point it seems to me the overarching plot has 3 elements to it:

1) The unity of the team as they adapt to roles they have never dealt with or do no want to deal with.

2) What exactly happened to Coulson between the movie and now.

3) The Rising Tide and that hacker gals loyalties.

Hmm...I'd almost forgotten about Coulson and his vacation in Tahiti ("It's a magical place"). That "He can never know" line from episode 1 certainly indicates that there's more there than meets the eye.

I think the team's ability to work together is going to be resolved relatively quickly, but their differences will continue to be a source of internal drama and comedy.

I'm wondering now how big The Rising Tide actually is. They made it out to be some big, bad group at first but then it almost seemed like Skye was the only member since it was hardly mentioned again after they caught her. Now I'm not so sure. Maybe it'll turn out to be HYDRA front. Wouldn't that just shatter Skye's idealistic dreams of making the world a better place?

We are also waiting on the back story for Melinda May / "The Cavalry" and why she agreed to join the team as a non combatant but seems to be in the thick of it every time.

As for Skye - well she responded to that message after the 10 second timer on the untraceable hack ran out!

Still not getting Ward - I just find Brett Dalton far too wooden in his acting and interactions with the other characters. Fitz and Simmons also don't seem to work that well as characters either - yes I get the fact they are geeky and interact with each other at a level way above the understanding of the viewer but they seem to have very little depth as characters that actual contribute to moving the story along, rather they seem to appear as comic light relief.

Was nice to see Nick Fury there - but why will he allow them a bar in the plane but no fish-tank?

The show has flashes every now and then of what it could be, unfortunately they mainly seem to be when the big name stars are on screen. I do hope they get these teething issues sorted out so the show gets the ratings it will require to continue.

I always find it a bit laughable when people complain of characters being flat or lacking depth so early on.

You simply cannot create a deep personality for every character without some serious screen time invested.

I mean even when you look back on the big time classics like Friends they are all kinda flat and have fairly major personality differences from what we remember in the first season, especially in the first few episodes.

The same can also be said about networks cancelling a show before it even has a chance to find its audience. Case in point: Lucky 7, another new fall show, was just cancelled after only two episodes. Two. Even Drive lasted longer than that.

Hopefully ABC is taking more of a long term approach. Although, if there's another big dip in viewership numbers again this week, AoS might be SOL.

I always find it annoying how networks do that, I mean they full well know how their business works and that most shows settle in to their true value mid-late season 1 and early season 2 - yet they gladly yank shows so early on when they have perfectly respectable viewing figures.

I hope AoS is a bit safer as bigger budget items tend to be given more breathing space as it is harder to justify writing the cost off. Eg the recent Dinosaur time travel one (title is escaping me) that had Spileberg n hat not on board got a whole season, Once Upon a Time seemed to get a bit more breather space too and felt like a late bloomer in terms of audience but with the cgi, costumes locations etc and larger cast was obviously bigger budget than something like Partners which only had basic sets and 4 main cast.

I still kinda hold out hope for a TV movie to finish off Heroes properly ='[

It looks like ABC has picked up AoS for a full season, so we're getting at least 22 episodes. This will be Whedon's first full broadcast season since the last season of Angel in 2003-2004 (both seasons of Dollhouse were short, 13 episode runs).

I wish broadcast TV would focus more on 13 episodes seasons, especially for a show like AoS where quality matters. There is still very little context to the world of AoS, and it relies to heavy on superheroes without having any. I also find the actor who plays Ward to be annoying. I think if they got someone else in there that wasn't so robotic, it could greatly improve the dynamic of the cast.

But Shield isn't all about superheroes, so why should the show centre on them?

Plus Ward is MEANT to be a bit emotionless and robotic due to his one man killing machine training.

And it isn't a world without context it directly follows on from Avengers Assemble, and subsequently Iron man, capt america, thor, hulk etc. thats like 7 or 8 movies of context for ya.

Not to mention 40+ years of Marvel comics history.

Sy's right about Ward, he's been the lone wolf so long that he's having trouble fitting into the group dynamic. We saw a glimmer of his personal side this episode and I think they're only going to expand upon it from here. Baby steps though, that's not the type of person to give everything away at once.

I really hope they don't go too much into the super villain thing, but we saw a glimmer of that at the end of this episode as well. Given that the movies are part of the show's history though, I don't see how they can avoid it forever.

Movies are cool, but the centerpiece to the movies are the superheroes. Shield should be able to stand on it's own without relying so heavily on it's movie counterparts when they aren't going to feature the assistance of it's superheroes. And like you mentioned Kaida, they hinted at the possibility of a super villain, which I can't see our team of shield agents being able to defeat without some sort of assistance either from a superhero, or the main group of shield agents from the movies.

The movies are about super heroes and how Shield brought them together.

The TV show is about what Shield is and what normal people are doing behind the scenes to deal with there incursions and entities that can lead to supers.

As far as I am concerned Shield is standing on its own just fine in the show so far without supers and they don't really need supers to deal with things.

Sure we might see some super villain types come in, but I don't think its going to be any big bad that they are entirely incapable of dealing with themselves.

Also given the interrelation of the shows and movies I don't think the glimmer we saw of a super villain will necessarily be part of the TV show.

Though as a teaser villain Franklyn Hal aka Graviton is an interesting one, suited to use in the TV show as one of the lesser villains that most wouldn't immediately know.

I want to like it, but so far it's just been cheesy. I'll give it a couple more episodes to see if it hits a rhythm.
