New Board - Community Created Tools

Today we announce a new Tip.It pilot project and accompanying new board - Community Created Tools!

 

This new board, as you may be able to guess from the name, is for people to share links to RuneScape tools they have created and uploaded to the internet. I strongly advise reading the How This Board Works sticky, but to summarize:

 

RuneScape Rules Still Apply - Tip.It will not support programs that violate the RuneScape official rules. Any program found to be in violation of the rules will be denied/removed.

 

New Topics Are Moderated - New Threads must be approved by a moderator before they become visible, to allow for our approvals process. Once a thread becomes visible, posting works as normal.

 

Our Vetting Process - In an effort to weed out the bulk of the malware that a project such as this will inevitably attract, all programs will be uploaded to https://www.virustotal.com/ prior to approval. This site uses several Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs, and any programing found to flag any of the scanners in use by this site will not be approved. This process is not 100%, and Tip.It makes no claim that a program is safe to download, only that the program has passed this vetting process on the date of the scan.

 

As an additional measure, all approved topics will have a post by a moderator or administrator reminding users that this is not a 100% process, the results of the scan, and a link to the download. This is done primarily to prevent thread creators from changing the download link after the topic has been approved, and we highly recommend that users download from the moderators post only.

 

We Encourage Source Code - It is much easier to see that a program is on the up and up if people can see how it works. We will not force users to post their source code, but we strongly encourage that you do.

 

 

Again, we cannot guarantee that the programs we allow are safe to use. Right now, this is a pilot project to evaluate the feasibility of allowing this sort of advertising on our forums, as well as gauging community interest in such a program. If this is successful, then we will look at potential changes to our vetting process to make it more thorough. Our aim is to give people who spend time creating legitimate RuneScape tools a place where they can share their programs with the RuneScape community and see their work recognized and used, and to give our users a place to look for such programs with what we hope is the bulk of the malware laden garbage already filtered out.

 

Please feel free to let us know what you think of the idea and what, if anything, you would like to see us doing differently in regards to this project.

Isn't it quite likely that even a legitimate program could flag at least one false positive among all those scanners?  Or maybe I'm wrong...

Random question thing:

Would it be possible to use the board (Or add a sub-board?) for the posting of WIP programs asking for feedback/people to test? Or only for finished stuff?

We hadn't really considered WIP programs. For now, I have no issue with them being posted as if they were complete. As the program is updated, you would just send me a PM and I'd check the new file and update the moderators post to point to the new version. You will also be able to edit the download link without our say so at your leisure, with the understanding that we have only checked the links that we include in our own posts. I am not adverse to working out a better system if there is a need, and if there is enough demand, I would be happy to add a WIP subforum as well.

 

As for false positives, I would generally expect a program not to. I think for now, we are going to stick to it and say that you have to clear every program, with some potential if you only flag one, depending on what you get flagged for. In the future, this policy might be subject to change depending on what results we are seeing.

 

And I've corrected the permissions for the forum, guests should now be able to view the forum (and let me know if not).

Already read the posts between the opening and here, and I like the idea. I hope it all works out, as it would open a rather awesome new era here at Tip.It's Community.  Also, I hope nobody ever ruins this, and a possible WIP section, for everyone else! :thumbsup:

On other notes, I'm reading along, and I see this word that sounds like some clothing meant purely for the male gender.  Perhaps instead of "maleware", you meant "malware" which doesn't have two "e"s in it?!?!? :o

"Deadly serious"?  Eh, nope, I'm pretty sure you're all joking.  Just checked Dictionary.com @ http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/maleware, and they also don't recognize this misspelling.  Heck, Google even spell-checked me over trying to type such a misspelling as "maleware", and fixed it to the proper "malware".  Stack on top of that my own recognition of how it could be mistyped due to the 'w' and 'e' sitting too close to each other on the keyboard, and the etymology of how "malware" came to be, and it just totally destroys any second spellings.  Hell, I think I'm gonna facedesk any time I see a misspelling of that word now, but it was definitely a real nice try at a joke. ;)

 

Now, I'm feeling like things got a little derailed here, so let's not continue this little side-topic... alright? <_<

NEWS - UPCOMMING PHONE/TABLET VERSION OF RUNESCAPE.

 

Okay I wassen't aple to create a new topic. So had to find a Place to ask this..

 

Well Ive been wondering about something.

 

I am personally Dying to get a Pocket/Phone/tablet version of Runescape, as the game is so Ideal for sush a thing, to be able to play my favorite game on the Go.

Problem and limits are that the gamne is based on a Java Platform, and As for the smart phone and tablet manufactures, they restricted the use of java and flash. And It will never be included in the original software either, cause there is much more money in to not, as people have to invent total new platforms and apps, just for running simply things like youtube for exsampel. And as everything becomes an APP they will get their huge profit of this.

 

Well I know that the HTML5 platform is in theory possible to run on phone and tablets, as a beta version is running ATM on runescape.

But this platform is so heavy, and our tabs and phone wont be able to nearly run this platform at an acceptable state, as for hardware issues. Also It would require at least a heavy 4G connection, or better to run.

 

Okay so I though about this for a quite while, and I even have a small private server who runs as an flash/java application Makin me Able to play on my IPhone's and IPad's. I though this would be an good idear, and prolly many people wanting this feature I currently gained. But i guess not many people have a private server, or and knowgle to set up sush a thing at home. And regardless to run this as an app remotely, it would also require some heavy hardware and connection to do it propertly.

 

So I thought about this for long, and decided this, I am Willing to setup a Gigantic proffesionel server with the best hardware and connection speed possible ATM. To run this application for other people to enjoy.

When im done, this would just be a simply APP download as u used to, and Via this APP, you be able to play runescape whenever, whereever u want to, even with just 3G network this should work with ease and No lagg.

 

But If i am gonna do this, I need to know first of all, if theres any general interess for my APP on the market asking on this forum, else I would just waste my efford. Secondly I ask you TIP.It kindly if you cost post the APP release and help me promote this, it should benifit the both of us..

 

Info: Why I need to know if theres a market for this APP, and if It can be promoted is that the first server I planned to buy just to run this and gurantee no lagg, would cost me a range between 90.000EU-120.000. And I predicts 1 server should be able to handle a range between 5-10.000 active playing user simultaneously. <But this I do not know for sure, and therefor need some beta testing, Will be the nxt part I be asking the forums about, as the hole point is to be able to run this 100% smooth, No Lagg, instant respons time, and userfriend/runescape friendly touch based system.. 

If there will be enough players using this APP, I will ofcause setup more servers, so It never would effect the experience and smoothness of the invidual player.

 

What would this APP cost?

I plan this to be a 100% nonprofit organisation, but as im using my personal saving accounts for this project, I need to get the money spend back for the servers. Meaning it be fairly cheap, as if I can get just a couple of thousen who download this APP, then it would maxium be a like 1-3$ or even cheaper if the interess for this are high enough. And be free to use in a later state.

And to maintain and run these servers, I would personal do with a couple of game geeking voulanteering friends.

 

Release date for the APP.

I have the money to spend the 1th April, and using the meantime to get information from forums, and comunity, get free beta testers, and get a view about the interess of product.

It would take me around a week, to setup servers, run some tests, and do some tweaks, to run the best possible proformance. And then 2-3 Weeks of beta testing, and fixing bugs if needed i think. So this would be possible to launch in the end of April. as an Estimated release date.

 

Future: the mainpoint is to be able to play this game on tabs/phones. But when its up running I planned to might add a little to the interface, like buttons for guide, information, calculators, for exsample via using tip.it. I though about swiftkit like interface, but diffrent, so it dossen't effect ur screensize, as the phone and tabs are allrdy limited there.

I also plan to add a few hotkey options, to make the touch ingame interface a little smoother. And have a couple of different idears, but these features I will begin work with in the future.

 

Now I just want to hear you guys feedback, if theres any interess. And if Tip.it might be willing to give me promtion, via little frontpage foodnote, or something when we are going online?

That is true, and what Ive been during to. But remote acces via teamviewer or similar tool, just won't make the game run smooth at all, and often with huge delay to from the point u press, till it does the action. Trying to 1 click attack a mob whos moving. Will make u misclick repeatly. And cause of this u just wont reach an game experience u can appreciate. That my oppionen. Like you cannot watch a movie remotely either. Yeah u can do it, but it just wont do the trick, do to lagg and delay, and other graphical limits via private remote tool.

 

A friend of mine had a HD movie Remote server, Made just for this project, also a 50k + machine.  I got to try run RS on this via 3G remotely, and it was just like running on my desktop on LAN. Didden't feel any limits, delay or lagg at all.

 

And with an APP who have improved the touch interface, this would really give u a total different game experience, as if u compared to a private remote desktop connection.

This would also be an option for those who have low connection speed, who cant run remotely, or a old laptop who allrdy struggles.

 

But I hope you guys also would beta test this APP, and tell me what you think. And if it would be worth the effort, compared to the private remote option
