Divination

It has about as much gameplay and relevance to Runescape as:

  • scooping leaves out of your pool
  • collecting marbles that have rolled under furniture when you accidentally spill them onto the floor
  • popping bubble wrap
  • cleaning up garbage on the freeway
  • reorganizing files in your office
  • picking up dog poop in the park

This conglomeration of the worst of Runescape's skills does not even have the decency to fit into the lore, and had to have a quest specially made to shoehorn it into the game without it seeming completely out of place. At this point I'd rather have Guthix alive than a new skill, which is saying something as I don't much care for the lore at all.

To be fair, popping bubble wrap is fun. Especially with friends.

For me, I'm about 50/50 on the skill. It really isn't a great skill but even with it being slow I don't mind it.

Remember how they promised the skill would have lore? Or how it was going to be an old-school gathering skill?

The lore is that we're putting the divine energy that came from Guthix when he died back into Gielinor so that evil people (by Guthix's definition) don't use it to get stronger.

It feels like they killed Guthix just to make the skill fit. Not cool Jagex.

Yeah but Daemonheim has more lore than Divination, and that came without any promises (as far as I remember). Not to mention Runecrafting having more lore, or hell, Prayer, Herblore, Summoning and Slayer. Sure these skills have been around for a while, but even so, you kinda expect a lore-heavy skill to have, well, more lore than most skills.

(anyway not arguing with you, just continuing the rant, as is appropriate)

Well I mean

Divination has more lore than every skill other than dungeoneering

Prayer, herblore, summoning, and slayer don't even come close

Runecrafting is kinda iffy, but I don't think it's as lore-y

It's not like gods are siphoning runic energy

Maybe with Bandos' death, we can try to collect his energy as well as memories to obtain more lore from him? I'd expect his energy to behave differently from Guthix's too (Malicious energy? Violent energy?)

As it is Divination vanilla is boring as hell as the most lore we get is the fortune cookie crap from the chronicles.

@Mere RC has quite a bit of lore if I recall correctly, the old (retconned) Rune Mysteries story talked about it quite a bit, and the ability to craft runes does tie into the Stone of Jas which V------ touched.

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

Guthix was like "here are runes"

V------- was like "oh we're running out so i'll make a few million more with the stone of jas also moonclan"

everyone else was like "oh shit V------- how'd you do that"

Wizard tower was established to figure out how to make runes

One of the wizards figured out how to get to the altars, red guys were like "no we though of it first", big fight, wizard tower dies

And wasn't Divination just Guthix going "oh shit I'm dead, quick everyone hide my non-PG memories in holes in the ground"? :P

No

Sliske killed Guthix

Gielinor started spewing Guthix goo from its pores

We tried to keep it in

Saradomin and Zamorak tried to harvest it and got into a big fight and Zamorak got an ouchy

Then Armadyl and Bandos tried to harvest it and Armadyl was convicted of third degree murder and was sentenced to 40 years-life

That's still way less lore than RC (which has the whole wizard tower quest line, Lunar Island vs. Fremennik and the whole BRD quest line). This is, after all, Runescape. And we know about rune guardians, we have Aubury's research and so on. Stuff has actually happened here.

Prayer, obviously the gods, therefore automatic lore background. Herblore: druid background. Summoning: druids and ogres. Slayer: semi-secret society with Amascut as one of its members.

By comparison, there is nothing in the game to suggest that Divination should even happen. It's completely out of the blue, has nothing to do with the old quests about the Anima Mundi (Hazelmere, for instance, or spirit trees). Jagex made zero effort to integrate it into the game at all. Even all of the new NPCs are new.

That's because they've thrown aside the old lore to fit this new skill. As Q said, it's called Runescape for a reason, not DivineEnergyscape.
