Behind the Scenes – June 2014

It’s not the Summer of Love this year - it’s the Summer of Decapitations and Giblets! Legacy Mode beta, a Bandos-themed combat quest, explosive skillchompas and an amazing membership offer mean that this summer will be a real blast.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Legacy Mode and Combat Improvements Beta

Free players and members

Legacy Mode is a way of playing the modern game but with a traditional look and feel, without the need to learn the new combat system. It includes the old resizable and fixed-window interfaces, ability-less combat and life points back to a max of 990 - all while allowing access to the latest RuneScape content.

This update is more than just Legacy Mode though. It comes with improvements to all combat modes: the reintroduction of Special Attacks, critical chance reverting to strength bonuses and a return to the ‘138’ combat level formula - as voted by you earlier this year.

As you get stuck into the beta, we'll be listening to your feedback to make sure you’ve got the best of both worlds.

With Legacy, we want to offer a combat mode that will be immediately recognisable to those who didn’t get along with EoC, so help us by getting involved with the beta once it’s available.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Mighty Fall

Members only, Master-level quest.

Our newest Master quest, The Mighty Fall, pitches you into a tournament on Yu'biusk - fighting in Bandos's name.

bts_news_graardor-30114311.jpg

General Graardor

Zanik, Bork, General Graardor and others are all involved, and all have stakes in the outcome of the battle. It’s here that the goblins, trolls and ogres hope to find a new purpose, and perhaps a new leader.

The quest's bursting with boss battles, each pushing you to the limit. You’ll have to master your melee skills and a brand-new two-handed weapon.

The requirements are mighty. Ready yourself for mortal combat with the following:

Attack 79

Strength 79

Constitution 78

Defence 72

Slayer 69

The Chosen Commander

Missing, Presumed Death

My Arm's Big Adventure

Defeat Bork

Yelps will be taking part in this game of death, thanks to your votes in the Power to the Players poll. Will he be fortunate, or will you send him squealing to the Underworld?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Skillchompas

Members only, new skill training methods.

Skillchompas are furry skilling bombs to be used when training Mining, Fishing, Woodcutting and Divination! Just throw them at your chosen skilling spot and get ready to reap the rewards.

Skillchompa

They're caught with box traps - same as chinchompas - and require Hunter levels ranging from 27 to 89. When used, they will give you +10% base XP in that skill, an increased chance of skilling success, and a higher chance of an enriched memory from wisps.

skillchompa.jpg

Just don't look into their sad skillchompa eyes as you throw them - they want to explode. Honestly.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Road to Elf City and Elf Graphical Improvements

Members only, summer membership offer and area improvements

The gates of Prifddinas - the Elf City - open this autumn, and skilling up to earn entry is quite the journey.

max_guild_concept-21172135.jpg

Elf City Max Guild Concept

Take advantage of our Summer Special membership offer and get an XP-boosting aura, and a crystal amulet awards bonus XP in the necessary skills.

The amulet can also fill your pockets with elder tree seeds and crystal motherlode shards - resources that will be useful once Prifddinas opens.

All this comes with three months' membership at up a 25% discount, or for just five Bonds. Visit our Summer Special page for more details.

Note that if you're a 12-month-long member or Gold Premier Club member already, you'll have received the aura and amulet at no additional cost.

To get into the Elf City, you will need to complete the elf quest series, including the upcoming Grandmaster quest: Plague's End, which is coming in a future month.

In preparation, we'll be giving the elven environments a wonderful, crystal-like sheen this month. This includes the Underground Pass, Lletya, the Iorwerth Camp and Temple of Light. Isafdar has never looked so good.

The skills and quests that will be required for this summer's Elf Quest and City are:

Agility 75

Construction 75

Crafting 75

Dungeoneering 75

Herblore 75

Mining 75

Prayer 75

Ranged 75

Summoning 75

Woodcutting 75

Catapult Construction

Within the Light

Improve those skills, complete the quests and get on the road to the Elf City!

If you haven't already, be sure to take a look at our Elf City design documents, and listen to our podcasts. Keep an eye on the news for more details of the journey to Prifddinas.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solomon's Store and Treasure Hunter (ugh)

Solomon's got some striking new apparel in stock this month. You'll intimidate others with the Vyrewatch and Aviansie outfits, and there's a movie-monster vibe from our Animation Team Showcase, including Frankenstein, Wolfman and Mummy teleports - available in short and long versions.

Treasure Hunter ushers back the Lucky Clover promotion, taking place over two weeks with sparkling new prizes.

There's room for a new item, too: the Spring Cleaner. It breaks down certain unwanted drops, either sending their components to your bank for use when skilling, or granting you bonus XP.

Fight hard in the tournament, grab a skillchompa, get involved in the Legacy Mode Beta and prepare for an elf-obsessed summer.

Im trying to think of what the new chinchompas will be called...

Apparently Mithril, "Adamite", Runite and Dragon, according to the dev blog.

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

They actually put in my suggestion into the game; The aviansie outfit is going to get into the game in one and a half week :O :D ! Awesome!

Other than that, quite a cool month. The quest seems really cool and skillchompas will for sure be useful.

So... 2 updates and another beta. (skill compas are not that big of an update either)

Slowly degrading month by month o.o

They're going to have less content made and released while they work on the elf city; that shouldn't be surprising.

Obtained quest cape and base 92 before obtaining any 99s! Currently finishing out my 99s with the (long-distant) goal of comp cape.

Why would Zanik indulge Bandos' wishes in a abattle royale event? Wasn't the whole point of her questline to break free from his malign influence, for not only herself but her whole race?

Hopefully that will be explained during the course of the quest.

I suppose but that kind of feels weak. The freedom she sought allowed her to find her own way, for her race to find its own way. The easiest way to find a leader of your people isn't exactly "okay, battle royale, here an now, lets go."

I'm sure it will all be explained during the quest, somehow...>_> I hope...

E: She could easily be involved to convince the other followers not to do this, so you know what? Yeah. I guess it can work out, and well. The bts didn't exactly say she'd be involved in the fighting, but that's the first conclusion you can come to after reading that the followers of Bandos are fighting in his name at Yu'buisk. SO YEAH MY BAD.

I'm really happy we are getting a Bandos related quest so soon. I was one of the few who fought on the Bandos side, and when we lost I was worried it would be a while before we saw anything come of it. But I guess losing has it perks in that we get the first quest from a God Battle.

The wat

In the BTS they said they were coming out with a "spring cleaner" on treasure hunter. It needs to be recharged using springs apparently. The spring cleaner breaks down unwanted drops and sends them to the bank. Im guessing it will break down bronze to rune armour and weapons as well as bows into raw materials.

More info on the spring cleaner:

Treasure Hunter – Spring Cleaner

Grab your Spring Cleaner in Treasure Hunter this weekend - from 01:00 BST on 27th June until 00:59 on 1st July. Get the most out of selected NPC drops by breaking them down to their base materials or XP rewards – it even sends the materials straight to your bank!

Unlock a Treasure Hunter chest during that time for a chance to win the Spring Cleaner, or Springs to recharge your Spring Cleaner and continue breaking down your drops.

This spring-powered invention is a marvel of gnomish ingenuity and efficiency. Take it with you when you battle NPCs to break down selected drops into their raw materials and bank the materials automatically.

Fancy some XP rewards rather than recovered materials? Simply click on the Spring Cleaner to switch modes, and it'll give bonus XP on every breakdown instead.

You can also choose which items to break down by clicking the Spring Cleaner in your inventory. Visit the wiki for full details of how it works.

Every player gets at least one Key per day, and if you’re a RuneScape member you’ll get two! You can also earn more through gameplay – simply visit the wiki to find out how and learn a little more about Treasure Hunter too.

Head over to the billing page to buy more Keys, redeem Bonds in-game, or simply click ‘Buy Keys’ when you’re in Treasure Hunter.

The RuneScape Team

From the runescape wiki:

The spring cleaner is an item won on the Treasure Hunter minigame from Friday 27th June 2014 01:00 BST.

If an NPC drops an item that appears on the spring cleaner's white list, and you have selected it for either dismantling or research then it will be sent to the spring cleaner. Every item that enters the spring cleaner has a chance to either return the materials it is comprised of, or provide bonus xp. You can choose which you'd prefer to receive to clicking on the spring cleaner to configure it.

The configure screen will explain each of the modes the spring cleaner can operate on. Choosing research will break down items into bonus xp in the skill the item can be made in e.g. Smithing for metal armour, or Crafting for leather armour. Choosing dismantle will break the items down into their base ingredient e.g. bars for metal armour, or animal hides for leather armour.

Configure the spring cleaner

Configure the spring cleaner

Each time an item is broken down, the spring cleaner uses up 1 charge. You can recharge the spring cleaner by using a spring on it. The maximum amount of charges that can be held at once is 500.

Every item that is sent to the spring cleaner is broken down to its lowest possible component, this means metal items will return to ores and leather bodies will returned to untanned hides.

Due to the fact that some items are made with multiple stages, the below numbers are the percentage chance to keep a base material at each stage.

Chance to keep an item

Skill % per Stage

Crafting 75%

Crafting - Battlestaves 90%

Crafting - Jewellery 80%

Fletching 90%

Smithing 85%

Examples

Item Stages Chance Material

Iron chainbody 1 85% Iron ore x1 (maximum of 3)

Black d'hide body 1 75% Thread x1

2 57% (75% * 75%) Black dragonhide x1 (maximum of 3)

Rune crossbow 1 85% Rune ore x1

2 81% (90% * 90%) Yew log x1

3 65% (90% * 85% * 85%) Sinew x1

2 67% (90% x 75%) Coal x1 (maximum of 8)

Configure the spring cleaner

Configure the spring cleaner

When selecting either the dismantle or the research option, you'll be able to choose which items the spring cleaner will take. Simply tick a box next to the items you want and those items will be spring cleaned. You can even use the 'Toggle all' tick box to select an entire category.

The categories are:

Battlestaves

Metal Weapons

Rune, Adamant, Mithril, Steel, Iron, Bronze

Metal Armour

Rune, Adamant, Mithril, Steel, Iron, Bronze

so, another silverhawk situation, and with another feature that people have wanted for ages that would have been better served as a minigame reward

if the springs resource is tied to a price, there's almost no point to using it for anything below the amount the springs cost

Eh, this is probably nowhere near as bad for the game as silverhawks, though it's definitely a shame that so much TH content could have been given out through the game itself.
