Why is almost everyone in Gielinor so hostile?

Recommended Posts

I decided to come back to this community, because why not? Yeah, sure I might have had some bad reputation a couple of years back, but this is a public message board, and I really don't mind negative feedback.

Anyway, one thing I couldn't have but to notice is the fact that far too many people in Gielinor seem very hostile towards the player.

When you talk to the ogres, they talk trash about humans, the barbarians in barbarian village don't like the player, that guy near that cliff close to the tenting place east of Relekka doesn't like when I jump to that tenting place, and I could go on and on.

Why are most NPCs so hostile towards the player? And it's not just that, even during dialog, the player is hostile towards some people.

There are many fantasy worlds that would be great to live in, but I would never wanna live in Gielinor because of how hostile everyone is.

Even the followers of Saradomin, which is supposed to be the good god, are that way.

There's the man in Lumbridge that you diplomatically 'save' from the goblin...he's thankful enough at least :P.

Well, I wasn't saying that all of them all. In fact I acknowledge that nice NPC's exist in the game, in fact there are many of them.

But still most of them do seem angry all the time, almost like they have anger issues.

RPG game developers will often reflect real world racism and prejudice, to racism and prejudice within their game. Makes it more immersive.

P.S. The guy will like you better when you jump to the "tent place" after you help them during a quest.

It also creates an atmosphere of challenge, I guess.  "Why does this person hate me?  What do I have to do to win them over?"  If everything were ponies and rainbows it wouldn't be as exciting or jarring.

I think it's also partly because of the background of past and current God Wars. When you've been fighting on and off for centuries, you tend to not be incredibly nice to outsiders.

Obtained quest cape and base 92 before obtaining any 99s! Currently finishing out my 99s with the (long-distant) goal of comp cape.

I'm gonna have to admit that's actually a very good reason.

True, but still. I can't think of any fantasy world where most people are so hostile. Besides Gielinor I mean.

No, I don't expect everyone to be nice, but I still find the world horrible if the majority of the people there are so hostile.

NPCs are wondering why players won't leave them alone.

this is the main reason for almost all of the tension in every group you meet in runescape

the eastern lands were pretty refreshing in that it's good ol economic and military oppression

Personally I do not think most NPCs are all that hostile on the whole.

Yes there and examples of specific races and tribes that vary between wary and out right hostile to outsiders based on historic events, but on the whole people are quite nice and very pro-adventurer. Plus most that are shut of or hostile we get to turn around and gain their trust through quests and such - e.g. we earn the respect of the main fremenniks and become an honorary one, then we also gain favour with the mountain tribe, the lunar clan, the kingdoms of Miscellenia and Ecteria and Neitiznot (not to mention the outliers at the outpost and gunnar's ground) - in fact at present the only fremennik group/ruler who actively dislikes us in the King of Jatizo. Which is quite good going considering they all were kinda wary to outright hostile towards us to begin with.

I thought you were talking about the players!  I played for several hours today and not a single person spoke to me, despite several efforts being made on my part.

Of course I would never say that the players are awful.

That's both ignorant and a horrible overgeneralization.

Sure there might be some awful players, but that's no reason to say that all or most players in RS are bad.

Given mass murder seems to be well within the law in Gielinor I'm not sure I would be overly welcoming to someone who races across the land killing everything in his path. Even less so given said person has probably at some point killed a family member, pet or friend.

Also we just barge into people's houses, talk to them like it's normal, snoop around and steal any of their possessions that aren't fastened down.

We certainly won't be winning "citizen of the year" anytime soon.

the law of the land seems fairly lax though, it seems like guards only exist to provide you with more targets than to actually protect anybody

it only protects other adventurers and they're just as bad as you

Gods stampeding everything, cities in decay, religious fanatics, death/plague/diseases, hostile monsters... Yeah i'd be on my toes too. + We've only had access to bacon for a few months now.

Also, monsters that are strong enough to singlehandedly destroy an antire continent if they ever decided to leave their caves... caves which happen to be pretty close to said countries' capital cities.

It's a bit surprising that people aren't more combat-happy, if anything. Especially considering the rewards.

You know what guys? You make a very good point.

If I had to deal with adventurers stealing my money as well as adventurers killing me or my friends, there is no way in hell I would be nice to them.

In fact I'm surprised there even are characters in RS who are nice to the players.
