RuneScape Latin American Spanish servers get the axe

Recommended Posts

Jagex is shutting down support to its Latin American servers of the game, which is really a shame because I enjoyed farming resources on a world without bots the cultural experience of playing with Spanish players.

[spoiler=Rough English translation from Google, in case you don't read Spanish:]Hello everyone.

Unfortunately, as of today we will no longer provide support for the Latin American Spanish version of RuneScape and November 3, 2014 will close its servers and website.

The launch of this product was a year and a half ago and since then we have worked with RuneScape Axeso5 to bring the Spanish-speaking territories and help the community grow we have today.

Unfortunately, the Spanish version of the game has not yet grasped the level sufficient to cover the interest costs of production, so it is no longer economically viable to continue providing content and support for him.

I want to thank everyone who has played RuneScape in Spanish for their support and dedication and also I apologize for the disappointment this will cause.

We hope to continue playing the game, either in its English version or other localized versions. All current members will extend your membership for another 30 days, which will be credited soon.

If in doubt, read the FAQ and ask what you want to know in our forum.

FAQ

Why we will no longer provide support for the Spanish version of the game?

While other versions of the game are economically viable, unfortunately the Spanish version never reported earnings.

In other words, we find it more expensive to produce and provide support in this version that the income we get from it, so that as a business, we can not justify their maintenance.

Will I be able to play with my account using Axeso5?

We have a good relationship with Axeso5 and we will work with them until we end the service. They may still log in using your account RuneScape Axeso5, but when they do the system will redirect to the worlds in English.

I bought membership to play the Spanish version of the game. Will you refund my money?

We can not make refunds for memberships purchased, but you may use them to keep playing versions in English, German, French or Brazilian Portuguese.

In addition, as compensation, we give away next month of membership to all accounts that have been acquired by Axeso5 or other payment methods.

How long it will Jagex continue to operate the service in Latin American Spanish?

As of today's date more translations for Spanish version of the game will not be made. The servers will close on November 3, 2014 One of the Jmods will continue providing support to the community during this transition period.

Are you going to translate the other Jagex products and provide support to Spanish in Spanish-speaking regions?

We consider the possibility of translating all other Jagex games in each case. Therefore, if the game warrants it, we will translate it.

In all seriousness, it's kind of a shame that they are closing it down so suddenly.  I guess 150-200 average people on the one P2P server is not sufficient to run the game, which sort of makes sense.  They describe their relationship with Axeso5 as "good."  I wonder if it was particularly lucrative for them because I have heard one or two horror stories about people using it for their RuneScape login in the past.  Does anyone have any more details or experience with it?

If you go to all the other Language Servers they're all pretty dead tbh. Although this sucks as I like using foreign language servers to actually learn the language..

That's another good point - is Spanish really more dead than the others?  Maybe they feel that the Spanish users will just filter into the Portuguese servers (due to the similarities between the languages) like they were before.

I think the killer for the spanish servers was the Axeso5 thing - not only has there been some horror stories which would suggest an customer service/compensating issue. There's been log in issues from the axeso5 side of things.

Plus the servers would need to do better than the other languages to turn a profit because of paying axeso5 in some manner opposed to just running the servers.

This is why I hope they won't do the dutch servers... I am dutch myself but I wouldn't play it, it just would look silly (I guess the same as the game in german would look), most of the dutch are able to comprehend english, many of them speak it quite well.

So Jagex is/was paying Axeso5 for their help?  I would think it would be the other way around with Axeso5 getting advertising from Jagex. But then yeah, that's a pretty questionable move when Jagex obviously has the capability to translate their own pages and should be able to handle account creation themselves, rather than logging in through a third party service.  It's one thing for a huge base like Facebook or Google+, but really no need for every service.

Really, Spanish and Portuguese are very far away from each other. :s As a frequent visitor of both Spain and Portugal I can say most don't understand each other. Portuguese sounds more like Polish actually. XD

I know, there are quite a few differences.  I still catch some words through my limited Spanish vocabulary though :P.

I guess that is like saying Dutch and English are alike, I am sure you can catch Dutch words that look like English, but you won't be able to understand most if it if you play in a Dutch world

Hopefully it won't result in a month of membership on my pure F2P account, or I'll have to become the almost first ever person to complain about free membership!

I doubt it, as the rough translation you gave in the first post only says something about accounts having paid something, so I think it only applies for current members? (Also Jagex isn't known for giving away free membership to non-members except for a trial)

I don't know, does anyone play FunOrb anymore?  All they have to do is keep the servers up and if people pay membership, I guess it works :s.  Keep in mind for RuneScape Spanish, they have to hire and pay an active translation team to update the game every week.  It's not so on those other products.

FunOrb is basically dead, though it would be a bummer for the people still playing games on FunOrb to shut it down. Although they could shut down games that no-one plays anymore (for many of them you need multiple players).

Funorb was a waste imo, but in general...If it's not making profit, why keep it running?

If the server costs are minimal, it might be making a profit, albeit a small one.

Obtained quest cape and base 92 before obtaining any 99s! Currently finishing out my 99s with the (long-distant) goal of comp cape.

I can't imagine Funorb server costs would be all that high - such simplistic games with no real upkeep being done and low volume of players can probably be run from 1 small server at almost no cost.
