What's with the skills that aren't abjectives?

And keep in mind that I am referring to present participle.

 

With most skills, they are named just that.

 

Farming, smithing, crafting, and I could go on.

 

But some skills like defense, ranged and slayer aren't.

 

Why isn't ranged called ranging or slayer called slaying?

This inconstancy makes absolutely no sense to me.

 

Either have all skills present participle, or have none at all. You can't have some of them, and some of them not. That makes no sense.
