osrs vs eoc player counts

I haven't looked too deeply but has anyone discussed the state of affairs that is the fact that more people play old school than eoc? I checked numbers posted few days and consistently there are more players on old school than eoc, not by much but there are more consistently. I wonder if a time well ever come when they put more effort into old school over eoc? Apologize if anything seems off, using Swype on phone atm so that auto correct could be exciting lol.

It does seem to be true that there are slightly more OSRS players over EoC, looking at graphs. A good chunk of that is due to them opening it up to F2P some time ago. It's good to see that people have sustained interest in it so far as it is good for the company as a a whole to have more people playing in any case.

However, I do not think that they will invest too much more in OSRS for the simple revenue related reasons. Old School lacks microtransactions and bonds, meaning that the most they can get out of people is a membership fee, and it's really just an extra off RS3 membership. They will most likely continue to concentrate most of their effort on RS3 and all the promotions there in order to earn more money out of the small chunk of the playerbase willing to spend large amounts of real life money, directly or indirectly, on the latest cool thing. Case in point: Shadow Drake pet.

/r/2007scape is leaking.

OSRS does have bonds now, but of course they're limited to membership only, so it doesn't really have the same $$$ boost as RS3's microtransactions.

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

Yeah, it may increase the subscription numbers slightly, for people who can afford/want to cash in in-game money but not real life money for membership, but it's ultimately just a redistribution of wealth (to a very limited extent) among the players.

I for one think a large portion of OSRS success is due to that fact that there are far less resources, or effort as the op put it. Churning out content weekly for years and years and years, in my opinion, has always been one of the largest, if not the largest, negative to the main game.

OSRS has less staff, but those staff care deeply for the game. Quality over quantity is what osrs is.

There is also the benefit of being able to learn from some rs3 mistakes of course.

I would agree about update voting for the most part. I am always surprised at how mature most of the results are, ie- voting no to certain op weapons or other mechanics. But there are some updates that were voted in that I think should not have been. However, this is not solely because of the players voting. It's always caused by OSRS Jagex not implementing the right questions or updates.

As an example I'll use the GE. The GE is great, don't get me wrong. However it's a massive update that changes nearly the entire game in big ways and small ways. There are also many flaws that could have been changed and instead, because the initial trading post poll failed, they went right ahead with the GE. I really feel like there could have been a far better system if they used the best of the trading post and the best of the GE. Instead we now have the GE and Jagex has said that they will poll updates or fixes to it retroactively.

Anyway, just my opinion of course.

  • 4 weeks later...

Here's this: http://www.misplaceditems.com/rs_tools/graph/

It graphs the number of online players every 15 minutes for each game and compares them. It seems for a while RS3 and OSRS were about even but recently OSRS has been very sporadic due to the DDoS attacks that have been taking place. Hopefully those will be fixed soon.
