Banned User Profiles

Recommended Posts

What is the purpose of locking the profile of a banned user? What I mean by this is the fact that you can't view their profile.

For instance...

When I hover my cursor over the profile of a banned user (Vezon Dash in this case), it appears as just text.

However, when I hover my cursor over a normal profile (MrGreens in this case), I get a small splash screen and a link to his profile.

Sometimes I find that I want to view banned user's profiles, but I can't due to this. Now, if there was a valid reason that this is the case, I wouldn't mind, but I just don't really understand why this is a thing.

“I had a feeling we weren’t coming back from this fight when it began.”

“Do you have any regrets?”

“I don’t. It seems surprising, I know, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This is how it was meant to be.”

“Huh, you never really notice how lovely the day is until you realize you’ll never see it again.”

“Mmmhmm.”

It's presumably an admin setting somewhere. As for why, privacy reasons - a dead link is a little softer than showing "Oh look user X is banned/inactive/whatever." The status of an account is between the user and the appropriate staff members and not something we share publically, so the same policy is applied in regard to forum profiles.

"Fight for what you believe in, and believe in what you're fighting for." Can games be art?

But isn't it more obvious that an account has been banned if you can't view the profile instead of just being able to view it normally?

It just creates more issues. If people can access such profiles, I believe (not 100% sure) they can also interact with it - ie add as friend, leave profile comments, send a private message (which is pointless if someone can't reply), etc.

Just like the occasional post or thread that needs to be hidden, some things are really best kept tucked away.

That's fair I guess. I was just going to look up a name change and profile comments on a banned profile in order to correlate an old e-mail with a specific date, but I guess I understand where you are coming from now.
