Disoriented after several years of inactivity

Blergh,

I'm completely disoriented returning to RS after 3+ years. Could use some of your insight (or cash lol, nah not being serious). Just found out my bandos, armadyl is pretty much worthless by now. Subjugation robes also but still salvageable. Sold 8k or rocktail to make some cash. Maxed out combat (incl. herblore, summoning, prayer).

  • What's good armor these days?
  • Minigames for making cash (is MTK still good?)
  • Are bots finally gone?

Current equipment:

  • Full bandos
  • Full armadyl
  • Full subjugation
  • Good old prossy
  • Barrow gloves
  • Dominion tower gloves
  • Polypore and ganodermic
  • All fremennik rings (none imbued)
  • Glaiven, ragefire and steadfast boots
  • Saradomin's murmur, whisper
  • Obsidian armor
  • Chaotics: rapier, longsword (+offhand), crossbow (+offhand), maul, kiteshield, farseer, staff
  • Fury ammy
  • Thzaar whip 7
  • Armadyl battlestaff
  • Zammy spear?!
  • Arcane stream necklace
  • Ahrim's wand
  • Verac and Karil set
  • Full void knight
  • Fire and that lava cape
  • Royal crossbow

Should I sell GWD this instant? All help welcome to try and get me an idea of what RS is these days. I'll check the Archive of Wisdom for guides on moneymaking. Thanks!

Well actually Bandos, Armadyl, and Subjugation are still the best in terms of nondegradeable armour, and still probably something that you would like to keep on hand. For things like Slayer tasks or low/med level bossing, they are sufficient.

If you want to kill higher level armour, the next tier up are the Nex sets (Torva/Pernix/Virtus for melee, ranged, magic, respectively). These degrade, but they can be repaired. The costs add up but it's not astronomical if you're using it for lucrative combat in any case.

Then there is the level 90 armour, but it degrades to dust, so you want to avoid using it unless you're doing something really profitable or high level bossing that absolutely necessitates it. The set names are malovelent/tectonic/sirenic, if you're interested.

If you're interested in moneymaking type stuff, Vis wax, broad arrowhead runs from Slayer Masters, and other things can still make you a little cash. Vis wax is a short daily whereby you take a certain amount of runes (which is different daily, and partially instanced to the player) and go turn them into the item vis wax, which you can usually sell for decent profit. It's only a couple of minutes of work too.

Minigames are sadly mostly dead and I don't think very effective at making money. There is a Spotlight system now, which highlights a certain rotation of minigames (along with giving a new currency to purchase rewards), to encourage people to play them. Perhaps you could make some GP off Fist of Guthix while spotlighted by playing it and redeeming and selling blue d'hide coifs or something, but I really doubt one could use it too much for cash. I might be misinterpreting what you mean by a minigame though. MTK can be okayish profit, but I think it's more popular among players who choose to play ironman (DIY) style as a way to obtain good quantities of lesser obtained herbs and other resouces.

Chaotic weaponry is great so keep all of that. Your next goal should probably be to go for a pair of drygores (higher level melee weapon). You can also take on the QBD and obtain a Royal crossbow for your Ranged weapon - you are certainly very well prepared to go for it.

Bots will always be an ongoing struggle for Jagex and RuneScape. It's like playing a game of whackamole - strike them down in one place and they will crop up in another. However, I would answer your question by saying that bots certainly do not have the stranglehold on gameplay that you might remember from years ago. This is partially due to Jagex stepping up anti-bot technology, and also in part to more skilling moving away from semi-afk, noncompetitive methods, rather than everyone fighting over coal in the Mining Guild for xp (just to use one familiar example).

You also mentioned moneymaking, so just one quick suggestion that has worked quite well for another person I talked to - try Frost Dragons with a set of Guthan's. You can sell Verac and Karil's to get cash for it, and you should be able to last there almost indefinitely thanks to your high stats and healing from the Guthan's set effect. You can use magic notepaper - a tradeable, stackable item that converts regular items into notes magically on the spot - to do so. It can be bought on the G.E. - I believe there is a limit of 500/4 hours but that should be plenty. From what I've heard frost dragons can be a reliable way to earn a few million per hour.

Have fun and let me know if you would like me to elaborate on anything else, and I'll do my best. :)

Thanks a lot, really appreciate the insight! Updated the list, forgot to add I already have the royal crossbow. Will definitely check out the frost dragons. Maybe with the notepaper I can add a fighting summoning creature instead of a yak.

GWD gear is still generally good. It is the best non-degradeable power armour.

You can get rid of the following:

Prossy,

Barrow gloves

Ganodermic (polypore can still be useful)

Fremmy rings -> Sixth Age Ring

Sara amulets -> Desert Amulet 4/Dragon Rider Amulet as cheap alternatives

Fury Amulet ^

Tzhaar whip 7 -> You already have chaotics

Arma bstaf

Zammy spear -> Upgrade to Chaotic Spear

Barrow gear

Upgrade full void to full superior elite void

Steel titans (or nihils, in some situations) are really the only familiar that makes too much of a difference. I'm not sure of the cost/efficacy at Frost Dragons but maybe give it a try since you are 99 Summoning :P.

I'd use a yak for banking still. You are eating about 15% of your potential profit by using it instead of a yak. You will gain more kills per hour with a steel titan, but you have to figure out whether the titan scrolls + note paper will eat up enough profit to make the extra k/ph not really make you any more money. I have personally never killed a frost dragon, so I really don't know.

“I had a feeling we weren’t coming back from this fight when it began.”

“Do you have any regrets?”

“I don’t. It seems surprising, I know, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This is how it was meant to be.”

“Huh, you never really notice how lovely the day is until you realize you’ll never see it again.”

“Mmmhmm.”

Got another question: what do you use as

1. controls (going to replace wasd for more action hotkeys)

2. screen/interface layout

Yeah, have something similar, except I use v instead of 4. I reserve 4 for special attack, 5 for quick pray and some others.

Reorganized my screen layout. Most at the right now, starting top to bottom:

1 Minimap

2 Those 8 buttons to access everything

3 Left to the above my ability bar

4 Further down from 2, my ability lists (in case one isn't on the bar I need them, mostly for health and shield abilities)

5 Under 4 my prayers

6 Inventory, gear takes up the rest of right side

And chat left-down in screen, quite happy. I chose the ability bars where they are now because my eyes are often focused on the middle top of the screen, so it springs nicely into and then I get an idea of the 3 tick global cooldown. Otherwise shifting my eyes down and back up gets me confused from time to time.
