  1. The calculator freezing during a calculation is normal and to be expected. You can speed up the calculation in two ways:

    1) When you can expect a certain crew member to be included in the result, use the 'force' checkbox to force that crew member to be included.

    2) When you can expect a certain crew member to *not* be included in the result, uncheck the 'available' check box for that crew member. Do remember to set it back to available later of course.

Other than that I have no tips for you. The calculator has been tested on numerous platforms, and numerous browsers, and it always behaves the same. It takes some time to calculate voyages when lots of crew members are available, and speeds up as you assign crew to a ship and perform the calculation for the next ship, etc.

  2. Another update today:

    • Crew members now also can have traits.
    • Captains and Crew members can have more than one of the same trait.

Please note that the calculator allows you to enter up to 4 traits for any crew member, but the game only allows 4 traits for a captain, and 2 or 3 (depending on the crew type) for a crew member.

  3. I do have a question regarding the traits. My captains have traits such as Fast Learner, Eagle-Eyed, Eager, Plucky, etc. The only traits that are coming up as options are Leader, Tactician, Seafriend, Gloombringer, Liability, and Storm Magnet. None of my captains have any of these traits, nor have I ever come across any of these other than Leader.

All the traits you mention are already included in the stats of the captains. For example; Eager adds a +40 bonus to Morale. If your captain shows 740 Morale (and he has no other Morale boosting traits) then his base Morale is 700, and the +40 comes from the Eager trait. The only traits that are not included in a captain's stats are the 6 percentage traits that are listed on the calculator's traits popup.

  4. Also Xena, are there plans to update the calculator to allow for captains with multiple copies of a % trait (e.g. 4x Leader) or crew members with % traits (e.g. a Jade Merchant with Seafriend)?

    1) Ah, good point, didn't think of that... Perhaps a better way would be to have 4 drop down lists, each containing the 6 possible percentage traits. I'll look into it.

    2) Do such crew members actually exist? It was my understanding that % traits only occur for captains... Just found proof that they do. This is not good news, as I now need to find a free spot on the interface to stick a traits button for a crew member, or perhaps come up with another way of entering traits. To be continued I suppose...

  5. Percentage traits have been added to voyage calculator. For best results, make sure you refresh the calculator page by hitting Ctrl-F5 so it forces a complete reload of the code.

To add percentage traits, simply click the Traits button below the captain's image, and check the percentage traits that captain has. Click the traits button again (or another captain's traits button) to close the popup.

The Sleek shipwright should now also be working as intended.

  6. Just a heads-up: I'm still thinking about how to add traits to the user interface in such a way that it does not get in the way of the other bits and pieces. So it's not forgotten, just needs some more time to do it right. Also keep in mind this is just one of many projects, and there are only so much hours in a day :)

I'll look into the Sleek shipwright upgrade and see if I can find out what going on there.

  7. The Tip.It Crew is the team of people who work to maintain and update the Tip.It website to which this forum belongs - http://www.tip.it/runescape.

We often get people asking to join or how they would go about trying to join. This post was created to shed some light on the procedures we use when taking on new crew members.

Step 1. Ask yourself if any of the following aspects describes you, as you read and post on these forums:

    • You have an active role in the Website Updates & Corrections, and Website Discussion forums.
    • You like to research and double check your findings when you stumble upon something new in the game.
    • You notice when database or guide contents on the web site no longer match the actual in-game situation.
    • You feel the need to get old information on the web site updated.
    • You provide information and tips when someone asks a game related question on the forums.

Step 2. The following list describes what is asked of a crew member. Make sure that a crew position is indeed what you are looking for.

    • Tip.it is a non-profit organization, and all crew members, as well as all other types of staff members, are volunteers.
    • Once a week, and sometimes more, crew members will be assigned tasks. These task can range from updating a single item to creating a completely new guide for the site.
    • All crew members are asked to actually commit some time to do crew work, and meet deadlines.
    • Frequent communication and working as a team are a requirement.
    • Crew members are pro-active. Whenever there is some time to spare, crew members are encouraged to start their own projects, and improve upon the site where needed.
    • Crew members can take care of their own in-game funding when doing crew work. We do not expect our crew members to buy the most expensive items just to be prepared, but we do ask to bring your own PvM gear, for example, when working on a monster hunting guide.
    • Crew members are security aware. They know how to protect themselves against viruses and take proper precautions when storing passwords and other sensitive information.

Step 3. Check if you possesss one or more of the following skills, or are eager to learn that skill.

    • Know how to enter content on a web page, using HTML5.
    • Know how to apply styling to a web page, using CSS.
    • Know how to apply behaviour to a web page, using Javascript and the jQuery framework.
    • Know how to write rich web client applications, using Javascript and the jQuery framework.
    • Have a good writing skill, and know how to use correct spelling and grammar.
    • Have in-depth knowledge about certain aspects of the game.
    • Be willing and able to do research into new areas or aspects of the game.
    • Know how to take screen captures and crop them so that they can be used in guides.
    • Know how to edit images with a transparent background, such as used in the items database.
    • Know how to use Adobe Photoshop to edit maps.

Step 4. Check if you are interested in working on one or more of the following areas of the site.

    • Monster Hunting guides
    • Skill Guides
    • General Guides
    • Quest Guides
    • Calculators
    • Atlas and Maps
    • Bestiary Database
    • NPC Database
    • Items Database
    • Shops Database

If you think one or more aspects of these four steps apply to you, then there's a good chance we can use your help as a member of the site's Crew.

If you have further questions, or would like to apply for a position on crew, you can send a private message on this forum to the Crew Leader, . Please give a short motivation when you do.

We will have a quick look, and if everything seems to be in order you will be sent an application form via private message. Answer the questions on the form, adding detailed information and motivation where needed. To officially apply for a Crew position, return the completed application. We will try to give you an answer within a week.

  8. Also have a related bug. Tried to force 5 crew members (did not know about the little button in top left of each crew at the time) and now calculator is locked. Cannot get any calculations to work at all, no crew selected, no ship upgrades used, zero chance of success.

Any hints as to how to unlock/fix problem?

    Thanks.

Some of the ship upgrades need to be selected. Make sure to always check the top one in each section. Make sure that all the Force checkboxes are off, and all the Use checkboxes are on. That should do the trick.

  9. Thanks for the detailed report. I've done some more experimenting myself, but no matter what I try, I cannot get the errors you describe. I've tried bookmarking, entering the URL directly, use the www.tip.it and the tip.it versions of the URL, edited the bookmark manually, but it all just keeps working. So I really have no clue why the calculator is behaving in such an odd way for you. I'm glad you found a workaround.

As for the storage; the scope of the storage is the top level domain www.tip.it. For an example, go to the Ardougne Tasks page, check off some tasks and inspect your local storage. You should see the tasks data and the voyage calculator data in the same storage.
