Is this your Last Air Bender arc where you reappear to defend us from the Fire Nation (porn bots/passport phish) a few years too late?

But it's good to see a friendly name in red again.

Ha - not quite, I never was much of a moderator, that's what @Cowman_133 is here for. I just keep (most) things functional. That being said, the upgrades have provided some additional anti-spam measures which should hopefully help a bit.

Thank you for taking care of things, Mage, it's really appreciated, even if there's not many of us still around.

And finally we have someone to give credit to for keeping these forums on the grid. Cheers to that

All good, the previous outages were due to non-payment of the bill (beyond my control) - that won't be happening any more. Outages will only be due to some kind of hardware or network failure, not counting me messing up a configuration somewhere. 😐 Both the forum and site have been moved to new servers and updated to facilitate that move.

Holy, not sure what's more surprising. The new forum design or the random admin who just appeared.

Just because you don't see me doesn't mean I'm not here. If I wasn't here the forums and site both wouldn't be either.

Yeah, it's more than a little jarring.

I have to log in with my email now instead of my username. Rip to the last vestige of Who Am I as my internet username. You were a good first try, alas that too many others had the same idea and ruined my ability to ever get it

Unfortunately this is what happens when we go about 6 years without upgrades, they all come at once instead of gradually. The old version was no longer maintainable. 😕

You can login with your username but you would need to login with Tesset as your old login name no longer exists. Display names and login names were merged to be display names only. You can of course take that as your display name if it's available.

  4. Description:  When viewing the Tip.It Community Forums in Secure Mode (HTTPS) with the 'Deflection' Theme active, the "Tip.It Community" Blue Header Banner is being Force-Loaded in Non-Secure Mode (HTTP), which causes Browsers to not fully consider the Forums to be Secured.

This particular issue is fixed, but that is not the only thing causing browsers to think there is mixed content.

I also believe I've fixed media not being secure as well.

Well, that, and the fact that apparently Google has started cracking down on Non-Secure site accesses in their Chrome browser.  I unfortunately heard about that one third-hand, to which I ran a web search and tracked down proof at https://www.wearegecko.co.uk/blog/security-dangers-of-http/.  I might be on FireFox myself currently, and therefore the disruption in my view is smaller, but I would not want these forums to get avoided because of Google's active shaming of Non-HTTPS usage.

It's true that Google is rating HTTPS sites higher than HTTP, that is why we switched entirely, but some mixed content on the site does not change the fact that the actual site content is requested and displayed over HTTPS, a couple of images here and there don't make the site insecure by default, it just means any data sent when requesting that particular resource is not encrypted.  You could have HTTP images all over the login form but as long as the form posts to a HTTPS endpoint it doesn't compromise anything.

What SHOULD be happening:  Forums registering as being in Secure Mode (HTTPS) on the Address Bar when the visitor requests it.

This will basically never happen due to the nature of forums.  You might get the odd page where you get lucky and the bar is green because every resource is requested over HTTPS, but these will likely be the minority.  This is due to the fact we display content provided by users, and we don't host all of it.  Case in point: no page that you post on can ever have the forum marked secure because your signature contains an image requested over HTTP.

  5. I found the following broken link on the Special Calculators page:

    Smithing Planner

    Anchor currently points to

    http://www.tip.it/runescape/?smithing_planner

...which does not contain the page parameter required to redirect users to the appropriate page.

Adding the page parameter does not fix the issue, as the called page does not exist. Instead, we should change the anchor to point to:

    http://www.tip.it/runescape/?page=smith_smelt_planner.htm

    Hope this helps!

I've fixed your first link to redirect to the correct page in case there are any other uncaught broken links to the Smithing Planner.  Thanks :)

  6.

Are the tags [hide] [/hide] meant to be non-functional?

    You saw nothing.

    LOL :XD:

    Should be fixed now. :)

I can point out one spot that there's still work to be done. :P

<*aims a finger at the "View Forum Rules" link above*>

It seems the Bullets got broke around the same time... Tripped over it by accident. :(

Not sure what you mean?  Can you provide a screenshot?

  7. I use the tip.it site daily for the POP Voyage Calculator, it's a huge convenience.

Anyone know of any alternative Voyage Calcs out there?

    Thanks

Yes we suffered some unplanned maintenance this morning, but I am not sure what you mean by "yet again".  Third party monitoring shows that the main website at www.tip.it rarely ever suffers downtime.

  8. Using Deflection. Switched to Tip.It theme and it doesn't work either. using Firefox (if that matters).

What happens is that I go to my user profile, then hit the likes tab, and at the bottom of the page is a "Page 1 of X" thing that doesn't let me click it to select a page to jump too.

Seems like it's an actual forum bug, I've reported it, in the meantime you'll just have to use your workaround. :P

  9. Upon going to your profile and clicking the Likes tab, a list of posts you received likes on is generated. However, when you scroll to the bottom, you can't click on Page 1 of X to jump to a different page.

However, if you scroll back up and switch to the "Given" tab, you can jump to a different page, and switching afterwards to the "Received" tab always you to jump to a different page too.

Minor bug. Not sure if there's any other relevant information to provide.

What skin are you using? Works fine for me on the Tip.It one unless I'm misunderstanding the problem.

  10. There will be some forum downtime during the morning (UTC) and possibly afternoon as well. I am going to be attempting a conversion of our forum character set from the current one to UTF-8. This should hopefully future proof us and also fix the problems that the RuneScape News bot has been experiencing (multi-posting, weird characters). I will be maintaining a full backup of the old database should anything weird happen to any of the other characters, but this shouldn't happen. The conversion itself will take some time, as every column in every row of every database table needs to be examined and if necessary, converted. This is much like the original process when we converted from phpBB to IPB, in that everything needs to be traversed. That being said, I wrote this character conversion script myself and optimised it to be multi-threaded in order to expedite this transition, and so the time should be far less for the character conversion itself (around 5 hours). However, I may also be potentially moving us to a different server, and if so, this will make the process take a bit longer, this is still undecided, but rest assured we'll be back online ASAP.

The forum will be totally unavailable while the conversion is taking place, and you will not even be able to access the offline page.

  11. Please pardon this turning into a triple-post due to time (another 7 days) elapsed, but are the Admins still watching for bug reports and information here? I've got yet another update as I start to go completely nuts...

I just flushed any cookie mentioning "member_id" and/or "pass_hash" that had a zero value, and then attempted to sign out, only to find my login status change back to logged in after restarting my browser again. The two cookies remaining that won't self-flush have a domain value of ".forum.tip.it", as well as they keep getting their lifetime reset on page travels, and the domain I'm getting on two that appear when I click to sign out have a domain of ".tip.it"... All four of these cookies have a name of "tif_member_id" or "tif_pass_hash" present on them, and it appears the server is accepting from either domain prefix/suffix. It should only take from one or the other and tell the invalid domain name form to flush, clearing the session entry on the server's table at the same time, preventing all backdoor access of accounts by unwanted third parties. As it stands, I haven't seen any recent posts that I hadn't typed as of yet, but this is worrying me to no end. :ohnoes:

Would any Admin versed in knowledge of this subject please post back to this thread as soon/quickly as they safely can? I'll just be face-to-desk until I hear from anyone that can help. :(

(p.s.: Has this thread reached the point where part of this needs to be split into the "Forum Suggestions/Updates/Discussions" area?)

You seem oddly concerned about security for someone running a web browser that is 11 versions and 14 months out of date. That being said, I've changed the cookie name and domain to be more specific, this is going to result in everyone being logged out but should clear up any problems with these old cookies, you can delete them if you wish. The new cookies are prefixed with tifc_. As per usual, if you visit the account problem page, this will completely log you out of the forum, this is intentional and for good reason.

  12. It's been a few days, so I figured this should be a separate post... :-k

Anyway, I've just noticed a major forum-wide character set issue. If you view  http://forum.tip.it/topic/321285-alan%E2%80%99s-challenge-2/ with no character encoding settings changed and the Tip.It Theme, it uses ISO-8859-1 instead of UTF-8, resulting in a mess in the phrase "Alan's Challenge" where a single quote or apostrophe should be. I'm not sure if this is really an issue with the NewsBot and its' scraping system, or if there's a deeper issue with the forums, but I figured this should be brought up as quickly as possible. :(

[EDIT:] I just discovered this is affecting all the themes, and I was even forced to rewrite the URL due to how the forum was messing up while going into Editing Mode after I tried to post in UTF-8... :wall:

~D. V. "Yeah, more oddball bugs..." Devnull

This has been like that ever since we migrated to 3.3 (probably 2 years ago now) and it's not going to go away until we do a full UTF-8 migration, aka back migrating all posts in a similar kind of way to when we first imported from phpBB, every post would need to be converted, I do want to do this at some point though.

I just noticed this today, but the "Account Problem" tab at the top of the page is missing from both the Deflection and Tip.It themes. It still appears properly in the IP.Board theme.

    Fixed.

I just discovered the RuneScape News sub-board (http://forum.tip.it/forum/27-runescape-news/) has gone totally haywire with multiple post entries. I don't know what happened, but I hope it eventually gets fixed. :(

~D. V. "It looks like a real mess over there, with many duplicate entries..." Devnull

Not sure what's going on here, it may be trying to de-duplicate the entries based on the name which of course is a bit messed up because of the character set.

  13.

Examples of emoticons which don't work? (Preferably URLs to the error ones)

The  (http://forum.tip.it/public/style_emoticons/dark_skin/icon_e_biggrin.gif) and :P (http://forum.tip.it/public/style_emoticons/dark_skin/tongue.gif) are the only ones I've noticed so far. The first just shows as an empty box and the second as a colon-capital p inside a box.

Again, this is just on the mobile version. In Firefox they display properly.

Both of those should be fixed now.
