Anyway it does say subscriptions: that is, not counting free to play accounts. Maplestory hasn't got 50 million paying players - they'd wish.

They don't need to wish, they made over 310 million $$$ and are likely to generate more in the future.

310million / year / 50 million players = $6 / player / year. Doesn't sound like they have 50 million paying players eh? So yes they can wish whatever they want - but they don't got 50 million subscribing players. In fact, they don't got any subscribing players at all, considering they make their revenue due to selling ingame items, as far as I know.

And yes, working with total revenue earned would work a lot better, except that many companies don't publish those numbers. And I guess RuneScape, costing only $5 / month, may turn out being listed lower then too.

True, true. But look at the figures! 310 million is 310 million regardless of the terminology of "subscribers" versus "players."

50 millions subscribers would be an impossible number, anyway. Probably all the subscribers in the world would have to unite in one game for it to have 50 million subscribers but yes I concede the point. *shivers at the thought*

We could speculate though? ;) I personally think WoW would be at the top anyway for revenue at least until the next big MMORPG craze. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be a partially free one that is good for women to play.

Yes yes, surely higher and probably a few times higher than what Jagex makes these days.

Oh yeah, WoW would surely be at top anyway - it's one of the most expensive MMOG games around and still has one of the largest player populations anyway.

*Duke gets headache of the thought of a MMOG that is good for women to play :P

Nevertheless it may be rather popular and get much more women involved in this whole MMOG thingy, although women participation overall has already been growing anyway as far as I know. Less so in RuneScape I think though.

Too expensive for me, I don't have that much time to play anymore but I did in my younger days. If it had come out when I was 18, I'd have grabbed a WoW cd for sure.

Exactly. RS in way is good for women because they tend to be more casual players so free games (or partially free) are better, plus RS is easy. Just make a game which is easy for casual players, partially free, put in more social interaction in the game (lots of hanging out, parties, events, good chat and guild system, skills, etc) and you are home free. That's what women want, not chain mail bikinis.

For those of you who haven't played WoW yet, try the 10 day free trial.

Then post.

I like WoW more than RuneScape. I like the graphics, chatting, quests, characters, it's full-screen too. I also think that the players on WoW are much more friendly & mature than any other MMORPG. The only reason that I play RS more is because I have some great friends on RS, and WoW screws up my computer.Or... my computer screws up WoW.. hmmm..

But..that's just me :P

Bare in mind that this report only takes into account North America and Europe. You have to remember that Asia has a huge market for MMOGs (they make most of them! - ROSE, Ragnarok, Maplestory...) and these have not been included in this report.

In the not so distant past I heard from a reliable source that RS is in fact the third most popular MMOG in the world, but that's still a great achievement.

The major thing IMO is that rs dosen't take up much computer space, like WoW do.

And thus being able to play it on really old computers too.

Also one + is at least 1 update per week, wich dosen't have to be downloaded for hours.

What's your reactions to this?

I think it's great, seeing as I've played since around when the game was started, it's amazing to see it grow to what it has today. Andrew Gower and the rest of the Jagex team should be very proud.

What makes Runescape so appealing?

Well theres no setup for it, it can be run in a browser, and theres a completely f2p version.

What puts people off?

The immaturity and average age of the players nowadays. #-o

Do you believe that RS can make it to number 1?

At the moment no, theres way to many subscribers in WoW for runescape to even come close to the revenue that WoW pulls in with its million+ subscribers.

99 Fishing/Cooking - Both Achieved in Rs1

99 Attack, Defense, Strength, Range, Hitpoints, Fletching

ya im quite impressed, i know rs has defnitely gotten more players

-(about 2 years ago, on the homepage, it said 20k-40k players currently logged on average, now its up to the 140k's)

wonder what its rating is at out of all online games..

Good question, but it will probably take ages to work that out, there are so many.

Runescape is great because it is simple, compatible yet fun. The simple fact that it runs on Java makes it truly incredible in it's own right. 8-)

Runescape is bad because of the community, which can be fixed if Jagex release more content that is not suitable for under 13s, but suitable for over 13s. That way they can stick with the contract and although revenue will be lost from younger players who were not actually supposed to be playing in the first place, older players will continue to play for longer because of the better community, and Jagex will benefit in the long run.

Also, the combat system needs to be improved graphics wise, but it's simplicity adds to the charm of the game.

Runescape already has more players than WOW, but due to the lower price, they are still no 2. I think that Runescape may actually have the potential to become the best, but only if Jagex gets everything right.

Congratz Jagex for reaching no. 2! =D>

The only way is to up the graphics..and maybe add some atmosphere like a sky/sun/clouds and weather. Also the speed of gameplay needs improvement-all that with a group chat system and rs might have a fighting chance.

That's all rs needs!+ a much bigger world :XD:

Its mentioned in one of the posts here or on another on this forum that rs has 3 million accounts.

On this topic under "best points" someone said that RS would be on level with wow or greater on the rank if rs was more expensive.

Wrong.

Not only is wow nearly twice as expensive a month but we have 8 million active subscribers. RS has 3 million active accounts

Also take into account that with wow.. you can have as many characters as you want on your account. I think 10 per realm. on average every runescape player has about 5 accounts each. so in fact runescape is a lot smaller than you think.

I am an ex-RS player. i now play WoW. Ill give you all a few reasons why wow is a lot better.

Wow has realms. too stop overcrowding you cant log onto any realm you want with any character. it has a charge to transfer realms. This may seem bad at first but it means your realm is a personal community. it makes it seem a lot smaller than it really is.

Wow has an auction house. you can set bids or buy out on items you want. by searching through categories by level, type. name. etc. The best way i have ever imagined of trading between players. Along the same note as in-game trading...

Wow has a "non trade slot" when you open a trade with another player so you can use your professions to help another player without scamming. on runescape if you would say to someone "heres my item its worth 10m can you put an enchant to make it do more damage" they would run away with it. on wow you can avoid that. However. it isn't really needed as giving enchanting materials to an enchanter so they can fuse them together before using the non-trade slot means that they could run of with your materials. however. not once has that happened to me. and as the realms are so small a scammer will get his name around the realm and hed be unsucessful

Wow game masters actualy dont ignore players. on runescape a player mod or game mod get harassed. they ignore people. it is a privalage to speak to a mod. if you try and send a message to one of the runescape mods via the games mail system youll be considered lucky to get a reply that isnt an automated response.

on Wow you open a GM ticket and you can wait a few minutes and a game master will talk to you either in game or send you mail.

If you pick the wrong quest reward. lose an item, get scammed, deleted your character, a GM can verify wether its truthful and recover it for you.

On wow you pick classes so you cant mage range and melee all in one charecter. you also can only have 2 primary professions at once. so that a high level player whos been playing for along time cant mine his own thorium, smelt it, and make his own thorium armor. he would have to mine and smelt it. then give to a blacksmith to make for him because he is an engineer and miner.

On Wow you have alot of different armor. like 1000+ pieces. they all give stats like intellect, attack power, strength, agility, +spell damage.. etc.

Not everyone wears full barrows if there rich enough. if someone has a guild to run 40 person instances to earn the best stuff it will vary on class. and vary on how you want to specialise. For example i have a hunter account but i want to specialise in having alot of mana for a hunter so i go for intellect. so i can last longer in raid boss fights without running out of mana. Whereas my friend whos also a hunter goes for agility, attack power, and +critical hit chance so he can dish out alot of damage.

On runescape even at the highest level you can hit anything from 0 to 1 to 40. on wow at the highest level you can either miss, your opponent could dodge or block or parry (depending on class) or if you do a special move it can be resisted. however, if your move hits (its rare to miss etc) you will hit between 500 and 1000 for example. or if your lucky (or have high critical hit chance) you will hit between 2000 and 2500 or something ;D but you cant just hit like 80 if your level 70

Im bored of typing and ive raised enough points.

RS has so many different skills to raise. Unlike wow only level you kinda can train is your fighting abilities.

No, not true. Like Darkness11 said, you train professions, and you can have (I forgot how many characters per realm?) several different characters per realm, and with alot of different professions, I'm not here to sell anyone, bit here are a few examples.

Alchemy (Not alching for money ^.^) Black Smithing, Cooking, Enchanting, Engineering, First Aid, Skinning, Tailoring, Herbalism, Jewel Crafting, and ect. There are only to proffesions per character. Its nothing like Runescape where all the skills are in one char.

The major thing IMO is that rs dosen't take up much computer space, like WoW do.

Thats why Runescape is #2!
