Getting internet access in a hut in the middle of a park

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Well I have a part-time job that involves letting out tennins courts during the summer. It really is quite boring, as all I do is sit in a hut in the middle of a park and wait for people to come and play tennis. I'm there all day, and I take my laptop down there. I was just wondering if there is anyway to get onto the internet inside this hut? It has to be some kind of wireless connection as I don't own the property so can't get Blueyonder to dig a ditch through the park just to get me online :P

EDIT: I also have a 3G phone if that would be any use.. I've heard that I can get 3G broadband or something through it :S

You could connect to the 3G or GPRS networks. It would be costly.

One can do it either using a normal mobile phone as the connection, or you can get specialised PCMCIA/whatever cards for it.

How would this work? Would I be paying at a certain rate for each MB or something similar?

It depends on what provider you use and whether it's contract or pay as you go. I have used both contract and pay as you go GPRS mobile internet, but I have never used 3G - GPRS is almost certainly pay-per-MB, and I suspect 3G is the same.

You need a phone with either a data cable for your PC, an IRDA port or one which will do it over bluetooth. I can't really advise on that as I've only ever done it with a PDA phone when it was connected to my machine in its dock.

many cell phone companies sell cards that slide into the laptop, and for about 200$ and a subscription fee you can get online.
