A purported new video of Osama bin Laden shows the al-Qaeda leader urging Americans to convert to Islam to stop the Iraq war, but the video does not contain any overt threat ahead of the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The videotape's authenticity has not yet been confirmed, but media organizations have quoted unnamed U.S. officials. An image taken from a banner ad featured on an Islamic website shows an image of Osama bin Laden. The ad heralds what is claimed to be a new video of bin Laden to be released ahead of the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, monitoring groups say.

The videotape's authenticity has not yet been confirmed, but media organizations have quoted unnamed U.S. officials as saying it appeared to have been made as recently as this summer.

In a soft voice, and measured tone, the man purported to be bin Laden delivers a wandering 30-minute tirade against democracy, capitalism and Western political leaders.

He specifically refers to U.S. President George W. Bush, the Democratic victory in U.S. Congress, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who was elected in May, and new British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who took office in June.

The video shows bin Laden seated as he talks, wearing a white robe and turban and beige cloak. His trimmed beard is shorter than in his last video, issued in 2004, and was fully black. In past videos, bin Laden's beard had turned nearly entirely grey.

In the video, he mentions the Sept. 11 attacks several times and praises the 19 hijackers' actions on the United States as able to "change the direction of its compass."

"Since the 11th, many of America's policies have come under the influence of the Mujahedeen," bin Laden says, according to transcripts obtained by media organizations. "And as a result, the people discovered the truth about it; its reputation worsened, its prestige was broken globally and it was bled dry economically."

Speaking Saturday from the APEC Summit in Sydney, Australia, Bush called the video a reminder of "the dangerous world in which we live."

"It's important that we show resolve and determination to protect ourselves, deny al-Qaeda safe havens," the U.S. president said.

'Two solutions' to end Iraq war, tape says

In the video, bin Laden tells Americans they have two choices if they want the war in Iraq to end.

"There are two solutions to stopping it. One is from our side, and it is to escalate the fighting and killing against you. This is our duty, and our brothers are carrying it out," the transcript quotes bin Laden as saying.

"The second solution is from your side," he said. "I invite you to embrace Islam."

"It will also achieve your desire to stop the war as a consequence, because as soon as the war-mongering owners of the major corporations realize that you have lost confidence in your democratic system and have begun to look for an alternative, and this alternative is Islam, they will run after you to please you and achieve what you want to steer you away from Islam," he said.

The al-Qaeda leader has not appeared in new video footage since October 2004, and has not put out a new audiotape in more than a year.

It comes a day after intelligence groups monitoring a website used by Islamic militants said the site promised the first new video of bin Laden in nearly three years to mark the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

I think by "embrace Islam" he means accept it, not necessarily to convert. However, the US would never embrace militant Islam, and we already embrace normal Islam.

So he's barking up the wrong tree.

tbh I was thinking that he does speak a lot of sense bar the conversion to Islam bit.

One cannot choose to make sense up to a point.

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."

How is this new? We've always known that...

What's important to remember is that most Muslims believe exactly the same as us though - he's a fundamentalist that shouldn't be listened to and should actually be ignored by the American media, not used to make some big story.

erm yeah you can. He was saying that it was the fault of the American people for voting Bush into his 2nd term in power, therefore letting him carry out his plans on war on terror etc.

Instead, he tells the American people that they have failed to persuade the Bush administration to stop the war in Iraq.

"You made one of your greatest mistakes, in that you neither brought to account nor punished those who waged this war," the speaker in the tape says, according to the transcript obtained by ABC News.

"You permitted Bush to complete his first term, and stranger still, chose him for a second term, which gave him a clear mandate from you... to continue to murder our people in Iraq and Afghanistan".

A friend to all is a friend to none.

Has anyone else noticed that he has aged since the last video, his beard is no longer grey, he dosn't look as old.

That's exactly what I thought. His beard was almost completely grey in the last video he sent out, and in this one, completely black. I doubt that they have any "Just for Men" in Pakistan.

I'd really appreciate it if you changed that to "Extremest" rather than "fundamentalist." Many Islam Fundamentalists would be very appreciated at the fact that you are equating them with terrorists, when they abhor Bin Laden.

Even someone as "off-the-scale" right wing as Osama knows that a younger image will give him more appeal.

Or he could have died  and they replaced him with a look alike. Just like what they did with Saddam, apart from he didn't die, he had many look alikes used whenever he was in the news.

Every Muslim I know thinks hes an idiot.

Whys he blaming the Americans on not stopping Bush invade Afghan and Iraq?

Hes the one who started it :-s

In order to further his cause, he has to spread manure. And he doesn't care how many people get killed because of it.

I remember this on Sky news.

In terms of just accepting Islam, Americans have. But accepting the hostile side of Islam (The extremists) is obviously not going to happen.

In terms of converting to Islam, it would be wrong for anyone to tell people what to believe in, people were born with free-will, and they can believe in what-ever they wish. :o Hence why there are many religions.

I'm just wondering when he'll finally be caught. He needs to be brought to justice for 9/11.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
