Ring of Wealth: Worth it?

Now, the age old argument is between the group who think the RoW is the ultimate combat tool, and the other group who think it a waste of time and money. But, not many people have truly put this to the test. So, I think it's high-time that we make a big, huge, Tip.It sized experiment on it. Here's how it'll work:

  • (1) Recruitment: For the tests to be accurate and fast, I'm going to need a few participants as well. Potential participants (that'd be you) must have a lot of time and patience to dedicate to this experiment. If you are not willing to kill thousands of monsters, recording every drop (accurately), then don't offer to fill the position. I'm thinking 3-5 participants (including myself) will suffice for this.

    (2) Experimenting: We'll start off with half of the group meleeing with the ring on, and the other half without. If there is an odd number, then RoW group will get an extra. The first case will be slaying 1,000 (one thousand) of a certain monster. I'll decide what monster based on experiences of mine and others.. haven't figured one out yet. Now, every time a monster is killed, the drop must be recorded, no matter how insignificant. Please record the number of the drop as well. If you'd like to avoid doing math, then drop the stackable item (that you're about to pick up) that's already in your inventory. Then, record how many of that item it dropped, and pick up the rest of your items you dropped. Please be accurate! If you mess up, though, don't be ashamed. Tell me, and we'll just warn others that there may be some slight inaccuracies. I'll be the first to admit that I'm gonna miss a number or two. NOTE: Please, if it drops nothing, then include that as well. Just put "nothing" in the Item Name field, and a "0" in the quantity. Thanks!

    (3) Concluding: Now once we have all the numbers, we'll put them all together in one big spreadsheet and make a graph and all that good stuff. We'll calculate the percentage of each drop, and hopefully what "wheel" it is on (common or rare wheel). Hopefully, that'll conclude and end the debate of whether or not it is useful.

    (4) Reporting: After we've done all this, we'll throw it together in one final report and present it to the general Tip.It population. Our experiment should be conclusive of one point or the other.. if not.. we'll do it again! ^.^

So now that we have the process down, we're going to need participants. Who's willing?!

  • 1) Lunar_Drifter (RoW)

    2) Brainymidget

    3) Euphrenia (RoW)

    4) hbk_hossack

    5) klan_kaos

Potential Participants (I'll talk to you tomorrow)

  • Mat

    brainymidget

    maddavy2004

    hbk_hossack

    klankaos

(You'll have to provide your own RoW if you're to be in that group)

In the meantime, we can discuss (on this thread or the already-existing) our personal thoughts about the ring and its usefulness. Please, no flaming or excessive vulgarity/harshness. Be nice. Respect each other's views.

We're training on FIRE GIANTS!

*sits and waits for fresh meat.. er.. volunteers*

Anyone who is wanting to participate should download the attached spreadsheet. Put your name somewhere near the top on the right side so I know who made it. :) Happy killing!

Before you start, I posted this on the other thread but I doubt people read it.

Test it on Aberrant Spectres or Chaos Druids. I guarantee within two thousand kills each you WILL notice a difference in how fast you're collecting herbs.

Certain monsters have higher "rare" rates than others, and since Double and Triple Herbs are on the rare wheel, or at least appear so, it's very recognizable there.

And depending on the monster I may be willing to participate.

To remove any other (possibly hidden) variables - who knows what factors Jagex use to determine drops - you should probably have everyone kill X monsters with the ROW, then X monsters without. And the without team should probably be all equipping the same item (or no item) in the ring spot when conducting the test. In fact, you might be best to decide on a standard 'uniform' before you start ie full rune with glory, no cape, gloves or boots and a rune scimitar - so that any hitherto unknown function hidden deep in the runescape codebase is standard across all your participants.

It might be a stretch, but perhaps getting participants that are all around the same skillset might be advantageous as well.

I'm interested. However, I'm only 86 combat. If you're willing to accept me, I'll be a part of the team. I need some combat experience anyways =D

I think, maybe, ten people would be better for this. The results will be more conclusive.

Just a little bit of a suggestion for you Lunar_Drifter, you and your group should test the drops of POPULAR monsters. It would help with the general RuneScape contingent in deciding whether they should bring a zerker ring to the fire giants or a ring of wealth to the dust devils, etc. :)

Good luck with your testing, I hope you guys pull it off! <3:

you should lower the sample to 100 chaos druids. (or whatever monster you use)

That way, people can take 15 minutes to do it all, rather than 3 hours.

1k would be best, but 100 would be quick. i mean 100 wont be 15mins, but [bleep]... theirs no way id write all that [cabbage] down i got if i had to kill 1k

also any1 going to do decent lvl things? like gargoyles?

oh and if this is going to have every1 kill 100 with and without, then i vote something simple like moss giants or ankou

....That completely takes the whole point out of it. Let's use an analogy:

Say I have 100 pieces of food. Now, I want to sample that, so I take 10 pieces of food to eat. Now, concluding all of my information on this one 10-piece sample would not be wise at all. I could've gotten a bad batch, or ate them too fast, or was picky about something, etc. I would want to take more samples of bigger sample sizes.

So, back to Runescape: If I only did 100 drops, then I wouldn't really be getting a nice, rounded representative of the whole thing. I could get lucky and have 100 drops of D Chains, or unlucky and have nothing. Now, from that first data alone, it says I have 100% chance of getting a D Chain, or 0% of getting one according to the second case. Now logically, you know that I won't get a D Chain 100% of the time. Taking a larger sample will even out that random stroke of luck and give an average for the drop rate.

Got all that? I'll add all you guys in as potentials, and I'll talk to you tomorrow about this. :) G'night all!

Havn't I seen a million threads about RoW testing before?

How many have actually followed through with it?

dozens.

Show me?

Have a uniform outfit for all

I thought that was implied.. sorry. Yea, I was planning on having the same outfit. I'm thinking Rune Plate, Rune Legs, Rune Large/Berserker, Glory, Whip. No gloves or boots.

Depending on the monster. I'll do it, I wear a RoW most of the time anyways, and I have recored over like 6000 drops from different things, it aint that bad. But I'm picky about what I kill.

Not sure if anyone has posted this, but fire giants would be a perfect place to test this, because they have a wide range of drops. There's common (the junk), uncommon(rune stuff), and rare(drag meds and left halves).

Plus they drop rune stuff sort of often, and it would be easy to notice of those drops are being improved or not.
