What makes a good Mini-Game?

In the last couple of years, runescape has gained numerous mini-games, but some much more successful than others.

Least successful i would say is the rat pits, it isn't totally deserted but is obviously much less popular than other minigames.

Most successful i would say are Castle wars and the fight pits, but why is this so?

All the minigames in Runescape:

Barbarian Assault

Barrows

Blast Furnace

Brimhaven Agility Arena

Castle Wars

Champion's Challenge

The Fishing Trawler

Games Room

Gnome Ball

Gnome Restaurant

Impetuous Impulses

Mage Arena

Mage Training Arena

Pest Control

Pyramid Plunder

Ranging Minigame

Rat Pits

Rogues' Den

Rogue Trader

Shades of Mort'ton

Sorceress's Garden

Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-up

Tears of Guthix

Temple Trekking / Burgh de Rott Ramble

Treasure Trails

Trouble Brewing

TzHaar Fight Cave

TzHaar Fight Pit

So what actually makes the successful and popular ones popular and others less so? Is it good rewards? fun gameplay? A good challenge? or a combination of them all?

Personally i think deep down people in runescape just like competition and looking good against others, which is why combat based minigames seem to be more popular.

Good rewards, and just being fun! Such as Barrows, BA, and Castle Wars.

wright as you no danqa you need 2 flag like standards on top of two seperate castles representing two parrallell gods and two teams fighting to reclaim each others.....well you get the drift 8-)

i find anything with a team and anything fun is what makes a minigame fun for me.

people play minigames for fun or rewards, but they also take into consideration how easy the game is to access. like people have said before, trouble brewing would be much more popular if it were easier to access.

castle wars and fight pits are fun because it's like pking without the risk and with a lesser reward. personally i'm not a huge fan of either, but i really enjoy trouble brewing(with a good team) and barrows, as well as the impetuous impulses minigame. i like them the best because they are entertaining AND have good or decent rewards.

They need to be close to somewhere easy to access.

Take Castle wars, and then look at trouble brewing.

i know.both close to tele spots.trouble brewing you can drink some rum to spawn wright outside teh minigame and cw just use a dueling ring :D

ps:i know what you were saying but its rather easy to get to troubl brewing

It needs some kind of player interaction, preferably PVP. Also making it in an area with lots of variety is important. Also important factors are simplicity, but complex at the same time (CW is the best example, the main idea is simple, all the different tactics aren't), some kind of freedom to do what you want, good rewards are helpful but not necessary. But the most important is challenge, as long as it's a challenging mini game people will probably keep playing it.

When everything's been said and done, more has been said than done.

All skills 80+

For me it must serve a useful purpose. A good reward is nice, and also a fun and challenging gameplay. My 2 favorite minigames would probably be Temple Trekking and Trouble Brewing. Trouble Brewing is fun, good exp, and can buy cool clothing with your PoE. Temple Trekking, probably my favorite, provides an incredible amount of raw materials as a reward. From one game of it I've gotten 96 silver bars, and from another I've gotten 59 Harralander and 24 Toadflax, for only about 5-10 minutes of playing.

pvp, or challenging makes it a good minigame.

exp as a reward? no [bleep] that. already got PC. exp gained as if in the real world doing similar/same things. yes.

limits of players per team/group is a definite draw back.

compare BA to cw, you need 5 people for BA and you typically cant find people good or smart enough to work together like they should. exp rewards? barely. rewards? well the rewards vary, however half of them are to get lvls in your BA stats. the other half? granite plate & BA armor and a gamble. the BA armors are NOT that great, they have applications tho.

CW, no team limit except for the fact that it TRIES to even its self out by allowing so many players in as their is in the other team, give or take a few.(not sure on the numbers.) literally, 1k people could be on a team and so could that many be on the other. at least thats what i believe. REWARDS? tickets to buy armor, bad armor. the gold set is adamant equivilent... unless you dont have the $ or smithing lvl you could easily obtain addy armor. not to mention the armor takes HOUR literally hundreds of hours to get. but this game allows for you to go up against all players with a equal footing meaning limitations on food quantity and quality and, you also dont have to deal with pesky barrows set effects. like 60's off lvl 85 dharoks or a 126 healing him self tons with guthans... or str lowering set effect of ahrims.

this is the most popular game of all, since personally i dont see barrows as a minigame and barrows and pc being the only 1s to rival CW.

anyway, i consider PC to be mildly fun, i actually prefer playing PC to buy the clothes then doing nothing, because i can use the weapons and items i own with prayers and things to my advantage in the game without people crying about me stealing their monster or taking their training spot and all this other [cabbage].

Good gameplay, a nice community involved with the game, preferabbly untradeable rewards obtained only through the minigame. :-w

Trouble brewing is ftw though.

Strangely with WotLK so near, I wished I could delay it a bit to push through that last TBC content in MH/BT :'(.

All the minigames in Runescape:

Barbarian Assault - Not many good rewards or xp. Unpopular

Barrows - Good rewards, not really a minigame in my eyes. Semi-popular

Blast Furnace - Need group (usually), out of the way. Unpopular

Brimhaven Agility Arena - Good exp, for a little while. repetetive. Semi P.

Castle Wars - Awesome PvP, Exp and like pking but safe. Very Pop.

Champion's Challenge - Not worth the time, no good rewards, excpet saying you did it. Very Unpop.

The Fishing Trawler - Low exp, not worth the rewards. Unpop.

Games Room - Board Games. 'Nuff said.

Gnome Ball - No exp, not really fun... Very Unpop.

Gnome Restaurant - Not too fun, often a waste of time. Unpop.

Impetuous Impulses - Great rewards w/patience, if your really patient and high hunter. Not worth it. Unpop.

Mage Arena - Mostly exp, not much else to do, waste of money on nats. Unsure... i think unpop.

Mage Training Arena - Worth it, then your done. More of a miniquest.

Pest Control - Lots of Combat, great rewards, awesome training. Very pop.

Pyramid Plunder - Great exp. Kinda pop.

Ranging Minigame - forgot about this one. Very unpop.

Rat Pits - Never been sorry.

Rogues' Den - Some cool rewards very long and not really worth effort. Unpop

Rogue Trader - Is this considered a mini game? Unpop.

Shades of Mort'ton - good exp actually, but kinda unpop except in designated worlds.

Sorceress's Garden - Great theiving ep when you get in the groove of the garden, but kinda empty a lot.

Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-up - Not much rewards... Just woodcutting. unpop.

Tears of Guthix -Good way to level up low out of the way skills. Pop?

Temple Trekking / Burgh de Rott Ramble - Takes forever for rewards, too hard to get unless your determined. Unpop.

Treasure Trails - Awesome rewards, fun. Very pop.

Trouble Brewing - Havent been or seen sorry.

TzHaar Fight Cave - Fire cape, pretty good exp just as a pass by, Fire cape. pop

TzHaar Fight Pit - PvP action to be called the best. Very Pop. with higher levels.
