Is the Wii worth it?

Well... for xmas I was thinking of throwing out the wii as a gift idea for me. It's affordable, and I also am what you would call a 'casual gamer' I suppose... I can live without online play, and i'm not big on first person shooters(halo... blah. whatever.) I play a lot of old games. Super mario galaxy looks pretty sweet...as does super smash bros. when it comes out. In general I love nintendo games. But I still don't really know a ton about the system.

First off, what are some of the other good wii games/games you would suggest?

Also, (scuse the stupidity of this question...) but I don't really understand the controller either. The 'wii remote' i'm guessing is basically the primary controller, right? Does that work fine? Cuz it looks a lil ... different.

Otherwise, try to convince me it'd be a good purchase and suitable for me, if you can. Thank ya.

yes the controller works fine. right now all the good games right now require friends to play with to have fun like mario party, wario ware etc. but theres also zelda: twilight princess, mario galaxy, and SSMB.

it takes a little while to get used to the controller but it works well

It is an excellent idea for an Xmas gift, and you should seriously get it!

The controller style is a little awkward at first, but after a few hours of playing a game that uses the nunchuck and wiimote (i call it that), then you will get used to the controller and how to use it (I suggest Zelda TP). Admitidly, My wrist did hurt after playing it for so long, but after you get over that, you will find that you can pick up the controller and play for hours.

The channel functions are great too. I know it wastes about 10 minutes when my friends come over and someone who hasn't played on my wii yet (yes, you can also make wii jokes if you own a wii) makes their mii (it's basically like a visual profile for the wii system). Much laughing comes from this. There is also the wii shop channel, where you can buy a ton of old games, as well as you can get the internet channel to brows the internet on the wii (watching youtube on the tv ftw!), as well as you can get the everybody votes channel which is nothing really big, but it gives some entertainment value. You can also store pictures or small movies on the wii and make them into a slide show. There is also a weather channel and a news channel!

As for games, if you are a casual gamer, it is THE BEST system for this kind of gamer. There are some small party games that exist (mario party 8, warioware smooth moves). These kinds of games can bring out tons of fun at a party with friends. There is also wii sports which comes with the system. This is nothing too special, as it is just some mini games designed to use the motion sensor of the wiimote. It does however, work as a mini workout game ;) . Other games I recommend would include wii play (works as a party game too, and you get a controller with it), Zelda TP (I got about 40 hours out of this one... and thats just the main story!), Red steel (Not the best shooter in the world, but it uses the motion sensor system well), and metroid prime 3: corruption (Havent played it, but i've heard it comparable to Halo 3).

Hope that helps :P

Sounds like the perfect console for you, mate. The amount of fun you have with your mates as well is something I've never had before with another console.

The remote is brilliant - admitedlly, I was skeptical about how 'accurate' it would be, but my mind was put to rest within 30 minutes of playing.

To add to the games mentioned, Metroid Prime 3 is helluva lot of fun. Then of course, there's always Guitar Hero 3 ;)

The Wii is definitely for you if you consider yourself a casual gamer.

First, to clear up any confusion about the controller, it is motion sensitive and that play a big part in most games. It works great, I've had next to no problems with it (a few glitches with syncing it to the system, which I still don't understand but I fixed them somehow). Most games need only the remote, and the Wii menu uses the point-and-click type of thing with it. But some games like Zelda use the nuchuck attachment, which is basically an analog stick and two shoulder buttons held in the other hand. It may seem a bit intimidating at first, but once you get used to it it's an amazing piece of innovation.

Now, games. As you said, Super Mario Galaxy looks amazing and comes out tomorrow, so I would get that. I would also definitely recommend TP, as it uses the remote in a great way and can help you get used to it, as well as being a kickass game. And since you like old games, hook your Wii up to the internet using either a wireless router or the Nintendo USB connector and get the Shop Channel. It's accessed from the main menu and has a growing library of old games from 6 systems available for download from $5 (NES games) to $10 (N64 games.) It's updated every Monday with 3 new games (or 1 N64 game.) All you need is a credit card, or a redeemable card purchased at a retailer. Other games I would recommend are Super Paper Mario, WarioWare, and maybe Mario Party (I don't like it that much at all, but if it's your thing then go for it.) Oh, and Guitar Hero if you can fork out the money.

So yes, Wii is a great console and you should get it. And just because you're a casual gamer don't shy away from the other great games out there such as Metroid Prime 3. But stay away from Fire Emblem unless you are really into strategy games, because it's the hardest freakin' game I've played in years (I love it, it's just really hard and probably not to your taste lol.)

Go for it, the Wii is a great console, there are already some good games out for it, with Mario Galaxy being released next week (U.K), you should consider it. It will keep you entertained for ages <3:

Don't worry about the controller, it doesn't take that long to get used to, trust me, when your playing a game, you don't think about it as much, you just use it without knowing it, it makes gaming fun. \'

I'm just like you; playing games casually... So I don't really care much for ultra-high specs, BluRay movie support etc...

The Wii controller is extremely accurate and the motion censors work well in all games. If you're out of things to do you can just play the default sport games like Tennis, the controller proves itself by it's accuracy.

Not to mention, after 20 years of typical 'tap-controller-get-to-next-level-finish' gaming, the Wii is really refreshing. For example it brings a totally new dimension to the Zelda game. :)

Don't forget that you can play gamecube games on it. It has sockets in the top for gc memory cards and controllers and most games should be relatively cheap.

I'd definately recommend it, especially now that galaxy and brawl are coming out. Along with the gamecube games and virtual console it's easily the best system for a casual gamer.

Still waiting on super mario rpg for the vc.

You should defennitly get the Wii. It is fun, and the controller is easy to use. It has many cool features such as the Everybody Votes channel and the Wii Shop channel where you can download games from the NES, SNES, Turbo Graphx, Genesis, N64, NeoGeo, and one other I can't remember.

As for games, you should definitly get:

Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess

Metroind Prime 3: Corruption

Wario Ware

Super Mario Galaxy

Super Smash Bros Brawl when it comes out.

You won't regret getting a wii.

If you have a lot of friends, little siblings, and a family who would never touch a game, you gotta get the Wii. In other, more complex systems, you gotta get used to the buttons and advanced controls. All you need to know is how to shoot someone, and you end up learning everything except that. Well, with the wii there is a very easy game you can pick up very quickly. From the massive adventures in Zelda, the crazy fast pased action in Warioware, to a nice relaxing game of bowling in Wii sports, Wii's got everything you want for anyone you know.

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

Could you stand up for hours and throw your arms in ever direction non stop??? If not then don't think about geting a wii :D

You can sit too and most games dont require alot of movement.

I own all my friends in tennis by merely flicking my wrist.

There is no reason to "throw your arms in every direction non stop." When you get tired, sit down and take it easy.

Really, do you have any clue what you're talking about?

It's this action where we position our posterior in perpendicular alignment to the plane of a cushiony object, and bend our knees so as to lean on that object. Otherwise known as "sitting down". -.-

Short answer yes, long answer yes but be prepared to wait for the library to include more great games. The Wii had Twilight Princess, ExciteTruck, SUPER MARIO GALAXY (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and will soon have Brawl. Not too many great games, but the innovation, multiplayer fun, and of course the names only found on the big N, it's worth it. Also the cheapest system too. AND you can buy old NES/SNES/N64 games too!!!!! WAHHH!!! great system in short, I think!

One more thing... any lefties here with a WII? I'm lefty in basically everything and would this give me any trouble using the wiimote?

Nope, you can set the Wiimote for the Right or left hand on the Wii Console options I believe, but I don't think it doesn't matter if your right or left handed in any case. :)
