Bonebreaker6: Ranked #1 overall after Tks requested for her account to be locked. Never moved to RS2, that is when Zezima and Lilyuffie88 passed him in ranks.

Ezarc: First player to reach 85 mining. Supplied the ores to Bluerose13x.

Famous pkers

Due to the controversy of famous pkers, various users will have to recommend a famous pker for a pker to be added.

What is "RSC"?

RSC is means "RuneScape Classic". RuneScape Classic was the previous version of Runescape 2 (the game 99% of people play). RS2 was released in December 1, 2003. RSC remained open to everybody (f2p and p2p) until Jagex changed it to p2p only. Then, sometime in mid 2005, it was changed to "you must had played RS1 within the last 6 months to be able to play it AND be a member". There are currently very few people tht are able to play RS1. Runescape Classic is also called Runescape 1 (RS1).

RSC Info

News: Section about Runescape being bought removed. I wrote it on Dec 8, 2007. When I didn't know as much about RS1 as I do now.

The following facts are from when RS1 was first opened to when RS2 was launched.

1. The member version of the game was launched on February 27, 2002.

2. The maximum combat level is 123. Prayer did affected combat level but not as much as in RS2.

3. You could only gain exp after killing the monster.

4. When your fatigue reached 100%, you had to go "ingame sleep" until it lowered. This was not in the game in the beginning. It is an addon ;).

5. You could (still can) duel/stake anyone anywhere. When you died, you only lost your STAKED items and you spawned in Lumbridge.

6. Click here to view the original "planned" RS layout. This is not confirmed, so you can believe it or not.

7. Crumble Undead was 98exp per shot.

8. Al Karid (as it was originally called) was added a week or 2 after the game opened, before that it was just ocean.

9. There was no Adamant armor in the beginning. It was slowly released piece by piece. Same thing with rune. After Rune armor was integrated into the game (but no-one had it since no monsters dropped it or no-one could make it).

10. Beer could be drunk infinitely to raise your strength to level 99 which was promptly changed after word spread.

11. There was no buddy list at first, you used to have to type "tell (enter name)" then type your message and it would send your message.

12. Click here to see a picture of the RS highscores as of 2002, very old ^.^

13. Click here to see OOOOLD highscore stats (official).

14. Runescape Open Beta was released on Jan 12, 2001. Click here to see pic. From the Internet Archive, search "http://jagex.com" > dec 5 2000 > "runescape coming soon!" =)

15. In the really early stages of RSC (before the wilderness), The Sabres had a huge influence. This is a pretty cool quote: Largest War: Barbarian Village Debacle (Mithril Clan and RPKers versus EARTH Alliance, Syndicate Alliance, Dark Syndicate Alliance, NKKA Clan, and Sabres) this war filled up an entire server, almost 75% of the approximately 1200 users signed in were fighting this war. - Taken from this website

16. The Wine trick. This was when you drunk wine down to level 8 or below and attacked dummies. They gave 5 attack experience and no hp experience. You would see level 13s with rune 2hs.

17. If you stood in one location for too long, it gave you a warning, saying that you needed to move or risk being logged out. So if you were say, waiting with your general store screen menu open, you had to close it and take a step and reopen it in order to not be logged out every little bit. If you didn't move, you would be logged out and have to type random text to be allowed back in.

18. Player names were case sensitive at first. Proof can be found by clicking here.

Stories of how RSC first opened

First

Cyberwars, a game Andrew created, closed. Soon after, Runescape was opened. The majority of Cyberwars players moved to Runescape.

Second

Runescape opens up for the very first time publicly on Jan 4, 2001. RS was very different back then. When you made your account, you would select what you wanted to be: Wizard, Warrior, Ranger, Adventurer, or Necromancer. When you had made your account, you would select to be a "Pker" or a "Non Pker". Back then, you could attack anyone anywhere (except Lumbrdige) 5 levels above or below you.

Third

DeviousMUD, a game created by Andrew Gower, is shut down. It was never released to the public. Only Andrew Gower, Paul Gower, Constant Tedder and some of their friends (Lightning, Rab, Merlin, and Gugge) were the only ones to play it. It is also commonly believed that DeviousMUd is where Andrew & Paul got their ideas for Runescape and that it was the "basis" of RS.

"Official" Runescape Classic Firsts

Here are the players that were first to something in Runescape Classic. Though, there is a similar list down the fact sheet, that one was made back in Sept 2002.

Black Partyhat: It is rumored that some players saw Andrew and Paul wearing what looked like a Black Partyhat. This is a rumor so you're free to believe it or not.

[hide=Pink Partyhat Dupe]The Legendary Pink Partyhat dupe. Many argue that this never happened but they are very wrong. This did happen and they are not the same item as Purple Partyhat. So here it goes. From Jut's website. Enjoy reading

Evidence that this DID happen. Page 28 (as of april 19, 2008)

7 November 2003 - Duplicated items in game

It has come to our attention that someone has worked out a way of duplicating or creating items in RuneScape unfairly. Particularly it seems they are doing this with christmas-crackers which produce party hats.

Obviously this is a pretty obscure problem, since it's taken over 10,000 combined years of RuneScape playing for anyone to find it, but we're determined to close this hole.

Update: This problem is now fixed, thanks for everyone who offered help. With respect to the reward we offered, this will be given to the person who sent the first email explaining how the object creation was done.

I was the person who discovered the dupe and used it, and told like 3 other people, and then it got leaked. If it hadn't gotten leaked, I would be rich and the economy wouldn't suck, and Jagex wouldn't be uber pissed at me. This shall be a historical acount of the third time of duping. Before you begin to read this, please know this had no intentions of hurting the economy, or Jagex in any way shape or form. As for me, I have been banned on every character I own (including ones that did not use the dupe and we're banned out of error. Jagex wouldn't listen to my appeal though). Because of this, I am also quitting RuneScape now. But hey, at least im going out with a major bang. Now, onto the fun/interesting stuff.

duping2.jpg

The way the dupe worked was when in a trade screen it would put up a non-stackable item with an amount of zero, where it would normally be one. This would trick my side into thinking I put up nothing, and the other into thinking I put up one. So really, it's not duping because you don't need one to start with. It's more like "Creation." It also used an item ID. An item id is the number given to an item. No, each item does not have it's own ID. All r2h's are item 81, and all pink hats are item 580. This is why it is extremely hard for Jagex to find out which hats are real and which are fake. Here are some other numbers of items:

580 - Pink Hat

579 - Green Hat

581 - White Hat

576 - Red Hat

578 - Blue Hat

577 - Yellow

1278 - Dragon Square

795 - Dragon Med

575 - Cracker

81 - Rune Two Hander

duping3.jpg

And the next morning. Note that this was my main, who I had NOT logged into at any time during the whole duping dealy so he wouldn't get banned for bug abuse. Well guess what, he was banned. And, he didn't abuse a bug. It tells me to check my message inbox, but guess what, they didn't give me a letter either. Oh well. Probably deserve it.

Just remember, this was all for historical purposes. I now am quitting

runescape. But like I said, I am going out with a bang. Also, I am very sorry to

anyone who may have been hurt by my actions, especially jagex themselves. It was fun while it lasted. Thanks everyone.

*PAUSE*.. go wash your face.. done? ok continue reading:

The story. Some guy (SixFeetUnder) was playing around with [Link Removed] (RuneScape cheat), trying to trade a scythe. He failed. During his experiments he found out one rather interesting thing. Any nonstackable item can be created. Well, he got very excited and told 5 other people - me (Kaitnieks), Dylock, g0ne, Aid uand David. One of us couldn;t keep the mouth shut so in the next morning every RS player was crying about duped pink hats sold in Varrock for 5 mill each. Naturally it was just a matter of time for Jagex to find out, so I decided to have some fun. Like we did the other time with banker killing.Even I know that crackers and the silly hats are the most expensive items in the game. So naturally we created those. Oh, two guys also created and alched some kind of expensive shields (I dunno, drag squares or something - hey, don't call me n00b, I finally know where Al Kharid is). They made over 1 billion each. Anyway, here are pictures.

nezinomas.jpg

nezinomas2.jpg

nezinomas1.jpg

nezinomas3.jpg

To create items, you must trade with someone. They can give you any nonstackable

item by specifying count = 0. It's fixed by now. Well done Jagex, took you less

than a whole day."

"Many people thanked me that day. I'm sure it was good for economy and people who

had no chance to get a silly hat, too bad we didn;t manage to make way more of

them."

"The background. Here are some random facts.

1) Hats and other items were created by [Link Removed]. [Link Removed] is infamous RS cheat,

you don't need to know much about it, just how Jagex said there are no cheats

for RuneScape. Did they make a mistake or did they lie to you? You decide.

Anyway if someone offers you [Link Removed], don't download it, it's not being given

to anyone and what you will be downloading is a keylogger. Trust me, that is so.

2) Almost all players who created items got banned. Someone made 40 mill,

someone almost 100 mill and didn't get banned but most of the accounts did.

Especially those having 1 bill GPs and 100 sets of hats. My personal gain is

some pink hats and ~5k steel bars. Not that much eh?

3) It took several hours for Jagex to figure out the problem and fix it. During

this time they didn't do anything to stop the duping.

4) Jagex could not trace which items are duped and which are normal. That's why

only some items got deleted.

5) The situation in market is very unstable but seems like the rarest hat (pink

one, the most ugly hat) is now one of the most common.

6) Jagex did not roll back. I guess they don't really mind seeing rares becoming

less rare.

7) Andrew doesn't have sense of humor. Mod Mark does. He's the man! But

Andrew... You should all send e-mail to Andrew and tell him you love him, he's

very sad and lonely. Andrew promised Dylock lifetime membership if he helps.

Instead of that he banned his account. Go on, help the kind RS mods, your reward

will be a ban, you know you want it.

[hide=The Knife Bug]-----THE KNIFE BUG-----

This is nothing new to ME.. I have read before.. but yea it has "faint" away into my memories.. and I just forgot to add it to this topic until Meili started posting lolz. Here it goes. Enjoy -.-

From Meilis website (link in contributors list).

What was the knife bug?

The knife bug is an old bug where players could equip knives which were then a useless item but spawned upstairs of varrock general store. Apparently when Jagex created knives they put 3 weapon aim and weapon power on it but at first they were useless, it was only when flecthing came out in members that knives became useful. Each knife gave an additional 3 weapon aim and 3 weapon power to whatever you wielded.

Many players were banned for this bug such as Bigkingsfan, Grubyyyyyyyyy, Trupimp, Silentboy05, etc. Silentboy and Trupimp's permanent bans were later made into temporary bans and they got to play on their characters again.

The beginning

The first I ever heard of it was whispers in the game of some players being able to hit 30s. This was Jan or very early 2002, I think, and the max hit was supposed to be 30 with 99 str and no one had 99 str yet.

How the knife bug worked

Special note: this does not work anymore and these pics are recent ones, not from the actual time that you could do the knife bug.

In your inventory have a weapon. Knives should be in the space to the right of the weapon. Click on the mini map so that your char starts walking then click on "drop the weapon." Now, as I'm sure we all know, if you try to drop something while you are walking it doesn't drop until your char has stopped. Before you char stops moving, right click on the weapon, as shown on the pic below:

knife.jpg

In the pic below it shows that the weapon has been dropped, however the "wield weapon" option is still available and the knife is now in the place where the weapon was. If you click on "wield" then the knives were wielded!

knife2.jpg

When a knife was equipped it added weapon aim and power, the more knives you had equipped, the more weapon aim/power you had. The only drawback was if you equipped a lot of knives you had no room for food.

KNIVES.jpg

Someone gave me this pic of a newb using knife bug and hitting 25 with a bronze hatchet and knives on a greater demon.

Day of the knives

Now apparently some people had discovered the knife bug but it was a closely guarded secret. However, a lower level player X Magna X if I remember correctly couldn't resist showing off and numerous people saw him hitting a 30 which was impossible for him to do because it would have required him to have 99 str (which he couldn't possibly have due to his total xp which was seen on hiscores). Then the secret itself was posted in a Runescape fansite forum.

After the secret was revealed it was total chaos for one day as everyone tested/pked/trained the knife bug. People were hitting huge numbers left and right, people with even mid level str could hit 30s while those with high str easily hit in the 40s.

Funnily enough since there was only one source of knives people would stand at the knife spawn and check to see which players were collecting knives, which included RS's famous poeple.

Fixing the knife bug

After a time Paul took partial control of the situation as he started banning people for using the knife bug. Most players then stopped using it on their mains but low level wildy was full of noob pkers hitting 30s.

sysmessage.jpg

Hohto gave me this pic of the old-style rainbow system message of Angel2002 being banned.

It was actually a day of much fun, hardly anyone seems to have lost much and people enjoyed hitting all of those high numbers. New players were made with names "knife" or "knives" in it to remember this day.

The next day the bug was fixed and knives could no longer be equipped. A punishment was also added - those who logged in with knives equipped in their inventory died instantly. This is what actually led to a lot of people losing their valuable items, most notably Buffyslayer was instant killed when she logged in and lost her rune kite which at the time was worth over 10 million gp or so.

[hide=Second RS fansite EVER]While reading the Gower Archive forums, I saw a topic that was named "Second RS fansite ever" or something similar. The oldest file I found was uploaded on their website on 24-Jan-2001 23:29! I have also found some information on previously totally unknown or not much information available.

While on their "Get Started" page, I got the following

- Warrior - Warriors start out with a bronze short sword and wooden shield. They also have 3 attack, defence, and strength. If you start out with this class, you will also start with 12 hitpoints.

- Wizard - Wizards start out with a staff and a blue wizards hat. Their stats are 1 attack, defence, and strength with 10 hitpoints. You will also start with +6 Goodmagic.

- Adventurer - Adventurers start out with 11 hitpoints with 1 attack, defence, and strength. When you start, you will also get a bronze axe(hatchet), jug, pot, and tinderbox.

- Necromancer - Rangers start with 10 hitpoints, a staff, and black wizards hat. They also have 1 attack, defense, and strength.

- Ranger - Rangers start out with a shortbow and 10 arrows. They also have 12 hitpoints, 1 attack, defense, and strength level.

You may be wondering: "What does this mean...?". I will explain. At the very very beginning, you could choose what type of player you wanted to be. This quote gives us more information on this. Click here to access the website.[/hide]

[hide=Banker killing fest]-NOTE: This happened BEFORE the pink partyhat dupe-

Somehow, some players were able to kill bankers using the same program that allowed item duping. The pictures with the name of the program that allowed this, have had the program named blacked out. The website where I got this from cannot be credited to because it contains some links to autoing websites. This bug didn't last very long =p. The last picture is another picture of the black hole (very few pictures around). All pictures were "linked" into one picture to save "picture space" (50 picture limit).

All this was done with -

All I had was a lvl3 character, a shortbow and some arrows.

Apparently players (unlike Jagex) think it's funny too:

What? You won't exchange singapore dollars??? Take this lazy banker!!!

Now who's better?

Lol - maybe the best ranged training place is at Varrock bank?

Total anarchy!!!

Bah, my mates closed doors on me lol. Well soon to get back to banker slaughter.

At this point Jagex... err... fixed the bug, that allowed us to kill bankers. At least they tried to, for that we bow to them.

Here are my stats. Every single level is gained either at tutorial island or killing bankers.

Finally I decided to pay a little visit to my friend Mod Bennet at his office. For some weird reason he didn;t think that banker slaughter fest was funny. Actually he described it in a word, that RuneScape masked with ****ed. Anyway he wasn't in a mood for talking because some less mature [Link Removed]rs managed to piss him off before :)

Here my trip ended. Bennet came for a little moment and then disappeared. Oh well, worse for him, we could tell each other scary stories in the dark or try to figure out why we're hanging in the air and not falling (so do the dropped items :))

[hide=The Carpentry Skill]This skill was never *fully* released in Runescape Classic (though, was released in RS2. Named "construction"). For some time, it appeared on the stat window but there was no way to level it.

Andrew sometimes talked about player-owned-houses that he was trying to add to the game. At one point, he added some houses on the east side of varrock. Though, you could do nothing there. Here are some pictures:

zonghui2qg4.jpg

In this picture, you can see the "Carpentry" skill. There was no way to level it. Also, you can see Zonghui achieving 99 strength.

[hide=The shemale bug]Using the same program that allowed the banker killing fest and the pink partyhat dupers, players found a way to use female-looking items on male characters and vice-versa. So for example, a female character would be seen with facial features only a male character would have. The following picture is a reunion of players with accounts that were shemales.

From NEWEST to OLDEST. Extremely very extremely interesting information. I have read it all and it was very much worth it! Enjoy!

5th - October - Optional RuneScape members service coming soon!

Due to much demand we are planning on launching an optional new premium RuneScape service soon. This will bring a whole load of great benefits such as: frequent updates, NO-adverts, good customer support, no scammers/cheaters (we'll kick 'em out), and much more! We're hoping to make it available for just $5 (us-dollars) a month and this tiny amount of money will pay for many great RuneScape updates to come, and will ensure we can keep running RuneScape for YOU.

This is great news, because it will enable us to offer you more frequent RuneScape updates. Some of the first updates we have planned include: A duelling system, more monsters (wolf, giant-bat, lizard-man etc..), lots of new items, sound effects, more quests, and there will be loads more stuff after this.

We hope that many people will be able to afford the very small amount we are asking, if you really really can't afford to pay then don't worry, because there will still be a FREE RuneScape service available. Obviously since this service will be offered for free, we won't be able to update it so often. In actual fact running the free service will cost us a lot of money but we want to thank all the people who have helped us beta-test the game so far, and so will try keep it going as long as possible.

Thanks for all your support.

23rd-September - Dragon quest online!

Think you've got what it takes to slay a dragon? If so try our new quest! This quest has been designed with the more experienced runescape players in mind so it's fairly tricky. To start the quest go and talk to the guildmaster in the champions guild. From there you will have to solve a series of puzzles before travelling to slay the dragon itself. Only heros who have proven themselves worthy by completing this quest can purchase and wear the best armour in the game. The new rune platemail body!

18th-August - Kill stealing bug fixed

It seems that in certain circumstances the game was still not giving giving the treasure to the correct player. I have now fixed this problem. Many thanks to the people who reported this.

18th-August - Lots of small improvements

I've fixed the kill stealing problem, the treasure now goes to whoever damaged the monster most overall rather than the person who got the last hit. XP is split proportionally between all people who helped kill the monster.

Teleport spells no longer work once you reach level-20 wilderness or beyond. This makes the deep part of the wilderness dangerous even for high level players.

People who are green on your friends list also appear as green dots on the mini-map, making it easier to find them in the game, and easier to go adventuring with a group of friends.

Your players overall combat level is now shown on the stats menu.

2 more items banks have been added to reduce the crowding problems. One is in east Varrock, and the other is in Draynor Village.

Fixed seven minor bugs.

15th-August - Website updated

I have just updated the worldmap. It now shows the mining guild and the very south edge of the wilderness. The whole wilderness isn't shown however, so you'll have to explore it for yourselves! I've also added 4 new message boards, to give a total of 8, because the old boards were getting extremely crowded. Enjoy!

13th-August - A few bugs fixed

I just fixed a couple of bugs with the new systems. I've fixed a problem with the wilderness, whereby low level archers were able to attack high level players in the wilderness without being attackable back! And I've fixed a problem with the new stats menu where the XP indicator didn't update properly.

Also bear in mind that we might tweak the wilderness a bit over the next few days if it proves to be unbalanced, although everything seem ok so far. We are also planning on adding a dualing system which will allow combat outside the wilderness if both players agree to it.

13th-August - Stats menu now shows XP

Due to a huge number of requests, the stats menu now shows you the exact number of experiance points you have in each skill, and the number you need to reach to advance a level. For the more detailed information about a particular stat just point your mouse over it, and the numbers will be shown at the bottom of the menu.

13th-August - Wilderness system online

The new wilderness area of runescape is online! This is a huge new area which is part of an improved player-combat system which was first proposed a few months ago. A poll on the website at the time showed the vast majority of players in favour of the new system, so we have now written it.

In the improved system player fighting is only allowed in the new wilderness area. The ability to switch between PK and Non-PK will be removed and instead you just go into the dangerous wilderness area if you want to fight other players, or stay within the current map area if you don't.

The further you go into the wilderness the more dangerous it becomes, but the more treasure you could find! How much of a risk you want to take is entirely up to you. Some preview screenshots of a couple of wilderness locations are shown to the right.

26th-July - Runescape updated

The bank has been upgraded so you can now store any item in the bank not just gold. Useful for keeping your spare weapons, gems, and anything else you might want to store. You can store up to 48 different items, with a maximum limit of 16 million items per stack.

Runite items have been added to the game! Runite is the most powerful metal in the game, better than even adamantite. Both rune weapons and rune armour are now available to purchase from the champions guild. (hint - there is an extra item only available as a rare monster drop from a particularly strong monster!)

The player owned houses have been removed. This is because since they were original planned runescape has become much more popular and there is nowhere near enough to go around. Instead the 2 updates above have been included to compensate. The item bank lets anyone store the items they want to, and the runite items are an alternative for people to spend the money they have been saving on.

17th-July - 5th RuneScape server online

I just finished setting up another server help run RuneScape. The new server isn't being used to run another parallel world, but is instead working behind the scenes to help manage the save-games.

This gives a total of 3 world servers, and 2 support servers. This should hopefully increase the total system capacity to 4000 players at once.

13th-July - Andrew's guide to not losing your password

An increasing number of people are trying to trick other players into giving away their password. Please use a bit of common sense to avoid getting tricked in this way. Some common tricks to avoid are below:

Do NOT enter your password into ANY website other than runescape.com! If you go somewhere else and see a chat room or survey or cheat site which claims it needs your password then that site is a trick and will steal your pass. Don't be a fool. Be very suspicious of anything or anyone that asks you for your password.

Rememeber that real Jagex staff will NEVER EVER ask you for your password! If anyone talks to you, or emails you claiming to be me, and asks for your password, then they are lieing and are trying to steal your account. Jagex staff will NEVER ask you for your password for any reason!

Be very careful downloading programs from other websites. I have seen programs which claim to give you money, or make you stronger, or cheat in some other way. However this is IMPOSSIBLE! These programs actually contain a VIRUS, which will record your keypresses and steal your password. Get a decent virus checker, and don't run anything not downloaded from an official website.

I'm not trying to scare you, all the points above are just common sense! If someone in real-life said "give me your credit card number and I'll credit you "1000!" would you? I sure hope not! Just because runescape is a game doesn't mean you should be any less careful.

12th-July - Improved prayer system and more!

New monastery area which you can enter if you are a high level cleric. Includes monks robes and a special new altar to pray at.

Silver rocks to mine (requires level 20 mining)

Holy symbol of Saradomin, made by crafting from silver. Take it to the new monastery area to get it blessed to make your prayers last longer

The black hole experience in the dwarven mines!

A few minor bug fixes

24th-June - Updated world map

The world map page now shows where all the quests start. It also shows the locations of altars where you can recharge your prayer points, and the new tannery shop.

23rd-June - New tailoring ability

Paul has extended the crafting skill so you can now also use it make items out of leather. Take a cow hide to the tannery to get some leather. You can then use the leather with some thread to make gloves, boots and leather armour.

23rd-June - More runescape bugs fixed

I have now fixed the following bugs with runescape:

improved password box to allow up to 20 characters

fixed it so you can still stack extra runes/arrows even when your inventory is full.

fixed a bug which could cause stack of 0 coins to be created

fixed a bug with arrows of different types not stacking on the ground properly

fixed it so that leaving the bank displays your balance properly

improved runescape auto-update code

logging out now works properly when you log out at the exact moment of attack

fixed it so people no longer randomly get added to your friends list

fixed it so lumbridge and karamja shops don't share the same stock!

20th-June - New password recovery system

I've changed the system for retrieving a lost password. The new system doesn't use email because not everyone has a secure email account they can use, and people's email address often changes.

Next time you login you will be asked for the answers to 5 security questions. Then if you should lose your password you can use these answers to set a new password on your account. You will only be allowed to set the questions once, after which they are permanently fixed. Therefore you should be careful to choose questions+answers which other people won't be able to guess, but which you will easily remember.

12th-June - Updated world map

I've updated the world-map. It now shows the location of the jewellery shop, gem shop, crafting shop, armour conversion shop, fishing shop, and the places where you can catch fish.

12th-June - Lots of minor fixes and tweaks

Just made a quick update to fix and tweak various small problems. This update fixes the following:

There are now even more customs officers on karamja

There is more fishing bait available in the shop and as monster drops

Burying bones now gives 50% more experiance

The pirates quest is now added to the quest list

Added button to deposit 1000 coins at a time in the bank

Fixed making cake takes flour pot away bug

Fixed catching tuna doesn't give XP bug

Fixed food shop doesn't work after completing pirate quest bug

11th-June - The island of Karamja is open

Paul has now finished the island of Karamja! Go and talk to Captain Tobias at Port Sarim if you want a boat trip to the new island. Karamja also features a brand new quest in which you must hunt for hidden treasure! To start the new quest go and talk to Redbeard Frank at Port Sarim.

11th-June - New fishing skill and more cooking

I've added a whole new skill for you to try in RuneScape! There are various fishing points scattered around the rivers and ocean. Go to the fishing-shop in Port Sarim to get the equipment you need and then try your hand at fishing. There are 10 different fish to catch, and 5 different fishing techniques to try!

As well as the fish, there are now even more things to cook and eat in RuneScape.

28th-May - Completed quests list

I have add a new button to the stats menu which shows you which of the 15 quests you have completed. I hope this proves useful to people who are trying to work out which ones they have missed, so they can complete them all!

27th-May - Sorry for recent server problems

Any regular runescape players will have noticed that the servers have been experiencing problems over the weekend. I have been working extremely hard to try and resolve this problem, and hopefully everything will be back to normal now. I believe it was caused by a memory leak in the new magic system which I added on friday. I have now fixed the memory leak so hopefully the server will now be stable. I apologise for any inconveniance caused. - Andrew

26th-May - Prayers last 50% longer

It seems most people thought they prayers weren't quite powerful enough. I've therefore now changed the game so that all the prayers last 50% longer, before you need to recharge.

25th-May - 4th Runescape server online

The 4th runescape server is now online! (this means we now have 3 game servers, and 1 web server). It has now been fully connected so you can use it with both the windows and online versions of the game

I have also modifed the game to prevent people from logging in multiple players at once from the same machine, because doing so is against the rules! If you have problems with the system seeing your home-network as a single machine, then try using the window client which is better at detecting your network configuration. Update: Even if you can't use the windows client then up to 3 people on the same home-network can still play at once, as long as each player uses a different server.

24th-May - New magic system online!

The RuneScape magic system has been massively improved with the additon of lots of new spells. Magic can also now be used during combat! In addition to this there is also a new prayer system which lets you temporarily cast various effects on your character. This means there is now a total of 42 spells and prayers to choose from.

For more information on the new systems click below:

24th-May - Runescape updated

Due to popular request, female players can now go and talk to one of the characters in the game, and get their armour modified to look more feminine.

The ice dungeon has been expanded and improved. It also now includes a new ice-warrior monster.

The server status page now shows the top crafter, top magician, and top cleric.

24th-May - Pop up windows removed

I've removed the pop up windows because there were just too annoying. Hopefully the remaining adverts will make enough money that I don't have to put them back (E.g the revenue from banner-advert clicks doesn't fall any further)

24th-May - 4th RuneScape server ordered

Last night saw over 2000 simultaneous RuneScape players for the first time ever. Hurrah! To keep up with the increasing number of players I've just ordered yet another server to help keep the game running smoothly. I hope to have it within a few days.

21st-May - Updated FAQ

I've updated the frequently-asked-questions page to answer some more common queries. Click here to view it.

If you think there are further questions missing from the FAQ then let me know what you think I should add.

10th-May (10:00pm) - Lots of small improvements

I've been busy making lots of minor alterations and bugfixes to the game. The main changes are:

My-friends webpage now works properly, and also shows which server they are on

You can now private message friends even if they are playing on the other server

Windows client now lets you select which server to use

Reorganised the stats list to prepare for coming updates

Improved speed and reliability of the servers

Introduced new quest-point system to replace the old 'influence' system

Fixed 'using ranged combat advances other skills too' bug

Fixed 'impossible to mine gems' bug

Fixed 'pottery menu wrong way around' bug

Fixed 'server sometimes sends wrong wrong error message on login' bug

Fixed 'friends list gets blanked on lost connection' bug

9th-May (1:30am) - 3rd runescape server online

The new runescape server is online! I was planning on testing it a bit more and launching it tommorow, but so many people are trying to play tonight that the system couldn't cope so I've been forced to launch it early. Hopefully everyone who wants to play will be able to now.

8th-May - Runescape updated

I've just updated runescape to add the following features:

Better smithing tables, with more even spacing of items

New goblin quest - help the goblins find a new look for their armour!

New crafting skills - make jewellery and pottery

I have also just received the 3rd server I promised, I am now configuring it, and hope to have it online shortly.

5th-May - 3rd Runescape server on the way

Runescape is still growing massively in popularity. There are now so many players at peak times that I've just ordered a 3rd dedicated server to cope, and I hope to receive it within a few days time.

The new server will be used to run a 2nd copy of the runescape world to reduce the overcrowding. The 2nd world will be exactly the same as the current one, and so will effectively allow twice as many people to play Runescape at once.

When logging in you will be able to choose which server to play on, and will still be able to private message your friends even if they are playing on the other server. The existing saved games will work on either world.

3rd-May - Proposed new system - vote now!

It seems to me that the current player combat system isn't ideal. The fact that the vast majority of players have opted to be 'non-playerkiller' seems to confirm this. Therefore I'm considering changing to a new system which more people should enjoy.

With the new system different areas of the map would be allocated as combat or non-combat zones. In the current map area (including all the major cities and mining sites) no fighting would be allowed. To cater for players who want to fight each other I would instead add a huge new area around the edge of the map called 'The Wilderness', where player combat is always allowed.

The further out into the wilderness you go the more dangerous the game becomes, and the less restrictive the combat rules become, (so right at the very edge anyone can fight anyone!). But there will also be more treasure available to tempt people into venturing out despite the danger. If you don't want to fight you don't have to enter the wilderness area at all.

As well as the change above, I would also a new "duel" option to allow players to fight each other in the main non-combat zone. Duels would work a bit like trading, in that both players would have to agree before a duel could commence. Before the duel starts the players get to agree on the stakes (what the winner gets), and if things like magic and food can be used during the battle, and if retreating is allowed or not. This would allow you to try fighting other players in a much more controlled way, and should hopefully be a lot of fun for people who don't want to get involved in just randomly killing other players.

This would be a major change to the game. I know the newbie killers won't like it all, but I am trying to cater for the majority, not a few individuals. So please use the form below to let me know your opinion.

What do you think of the proposed new combat system?

13th-April - Server status page, my-friends, and password recovery pages

The 'current players' page was getting too long so it's been replaced with a new 'server status' page which tells you the number of people currently playing, and lists the top players who are logged in. So you can still tell which of your friends are playing I've also added a new 'my-friends' page which tells you if the people on your friends list are online or not.

I've also got the lost password recovery feature working again. It's now available by clicking 'lost password' on the menu to the left and entering your account details.

11th-April - Asgarnia map online

The updated world map is now online, and I've labelled all the key locations in Asgarnia, so you can now find your way around without getting lost!

10th-April - Server fixed + message boards online

I have now fixed the majority of the problems with the new server. All the major problems are now sorted, and I'm now working on a few less critical issues. I'm also going to update the world-map as soon as possible so you can find your way around Asgarnia.

More good news is that I have just put the message boards back-online. I have taken the chance to redesign and improve them, so I hope you like the new design!

7th-April - Server problems

We seem to be having a few server problems at the moment. This is due to the large amount of new code we added to the game yesterday. I'm working on fixing it though, so please be patient, and I'll get everything running smoothly as soon as possible.

The good news is that I think I have just resolved the server down-time issues, so hopefully the server won't go offline completely anymore. There is still an issue with certain players having problems when more than 1024 people play at once, this is only a problem at peak times and I expect to fix it on Sunday evening.

Also I expect to get the message boards, current-players, and password-emailing features working again on Monday. These have just been temporarily disabled whilst I get the new server code working properly.

6th-April - Massive update!

Asgarnia is online! and includes:

Ice mountain

monastery with healing monks

dwarven mine

goblin village

evil red monks

black knight castle

City of Falador

White knights castle

chainmail shop

mace shop

port Sarim

food shop

battle axe shop

ice giants dungeon

We also have 4 new quests!

dorics quest - fetch Doric some materials for making amulets

spy quest - go on a spying mission for the white knights

witches potion quest - fetch the ingredients for an evil witches brew

sword quest - help a squire recover his knights lost sword

In addition to this there is a new friends system, and new privacy features! Have fun!

17th-Mar - This weeks update

I've just uploaded this weeks update. I didn't get as many features added as I hoped, because I instead had to spend time modifing the system to stop a few players intent on spoiling the game for everyone else. Players who try to break the rules are just slowing down the improvements to the game, so please don't do it! Luckily Paul has also made lots of improvements this week, so between us we've still done quite a lot of new stuff.

This weeks updates are:

Added a button to email forgotten/stolen passwords back to their owner

Made changing your password eaiser (there is a new option in the options menu)

Added timeout to conversations - to prevent people blocking shops

Added code to detect which players are attempting to break the rules

Fixed a problem with the popup game window on netscape-6

Added a cook's guild which you can only enter if your cooking skill is 32 or better.

More stuff to cook - You can now make a variety of different pies, and also wine!

The sewer has been extended further.

You can now smith plated skirts

10th-Mar - Second server online

I've been busy this last week setting up a new server, and modifying RuneScape to use it. I'm pleased to announce that RuneScape is now running using two dedicated servers. This should allow more simultaneous players, and make the game more reliable at peak times.

2nd-Mar - Problems fixed

I've fixed a few minor problems with the new quest. In case you don't already know getting the skin paste now works, and I've just solved the clay shortage problem.

I'd also like to apologise for the slow speed of this site on the 28th-Feb. This problem has now been resolved and we're back to full speed again. I've also ordered a 2nd dedicated server to increase the reliability and speed of RuneScape in the future.

28th-Feb - Yet another new quest, and new options menu

Prince Ali of Al Kharid is being held captive by the Lady Keli. If you think you're up to a daring rescue mission then go to Al Kharid and talk to Chancellor Hassan. This is a long quest with many parts! Many thanks to Rab for the many hours he spent creating it, and to Paul for configuring it for use in the game.

I've been working on a new options menu, to allow you to configure the game to your liking. So far there are only 2 options. The 1st option allows you to choose the behaviour of the camera, the new camera mode is the first step in a new system I am developing, which will ultimately make RuneScape run MUCH faster for people with slow computers. The 2nd option is to switch your character between PK and non-PK. (you can only switch twice, so choose carefully). I will be adding more options to the menu as required.

I've also been working on a system to support clans/friend-lists. This isn't ready yet, but work is progressing well and I expect it to be available soon.

16th-Feb - New quest, and more fixes

Little imps have invaded RuneScape and have been stealing anything which isn't nailed down! It's mostly nothing important, but they have also stolen 4 magic beads from Wizard Mizgog, and he wants them back. Go and talk to him in the wizards tower to get started on this quest.

The trading feature has been improved further. You can no longer accept an offer at the same time as the other player is changing it. This will hopefully stop the cheating and make trading with other players safer.

A few other minor fixes have been made, for instance you can no longer walk through one of the walls in the ghost town.

13th-Feb - More RuneScape updates

Firstly I have fixed the error which enabled you to make double doors vanish by lighting a fire next to them. So hopefully no more trapped people.

I've also modified the trading window, so that you can point at an object someone is offering you to find out the objects name and description. This will help make trading fairer and safer.

Some new locations have been added to the map, there is a new shop in Al-kharid where you can buy plate-mail skirts.

The 'champions guild' has been added south-west of Varrock. Only Adventurers who have proven themselves worthy by gaining influence from quests are allowed in.

7th-Feb - RuneScape now works on NetScape 6

I finally worked out why netscape-6 wouldn't run RuneScape, and have now fixed the problem! The game will probably also now work properly on a few other browsers.

5th-Feb - New section of sewer opened

A new area at the end of the sewer is now open. Watch out because it contains deadly red spiders! Fight them to get the rare red spider eggs, which when taken with other ingrediants to the Apothecary in varrock can be used to make a 4-dose strength potion!

30th-Jan - Further combat improvements

Following saturdays update the combat system has been tweaked further. The retreating was still too difficult (particularly when being attacked by multiple players/monsters at once) so this has been improved and made easier.

The "keep 3 best items" rule has also been modified. If you attack another player then you now lose the item-protection for 20 minutes of game time! This makes the player killing aspect of the game more dangerous and exciting, but it also increases your potential reward, as if you kill someone else without item-protection you can now get the best loot! People without item-protection have a small skull drawn above them.

After many requests the guards in Varrock city now attempt to stop people fighting. There are large number of guards at the bank, so ***uming they haven't all been killed you can now withdraw your money more safely.

28th-Jan - New Quest: Vampire Slayer

The vampire sleeping in the coffin under Draynor Manor has been terrorising the inhabitants of the small village to the south and must be stopped! If you think you are up to the task of slaying a vampire, go and talk to the people in the village to find out how you can destroy this evil monster!

27th-Jan - Lots of improvements to the game

Ranged combat - You now gain experience for each successful hit, so it's easier to advance a level. Arrows also now fire 25% faster, and I've fixed the cheat/bug which some people were using to shoot super rapidly.

Magic - 4 new spells have been added which are: Fear, Wind-bolt, Rock-skin, and Elemental-bolt. The bolt spells have also been made much more powerful, and they are no longer dependant on your ranged-combat skill. This means each type of bolt now does a fixed maximum-damage, and to shoot more powerful bolts you need to use high level spells. Finally the staffs have been improved such that if you are wielding a fire-staff, water-staff, air-staff or earth-staff it acts as unlimited runes of that type!

Player killing - Due to a large number of requests I've changed the way this works. Firstly you can no longer log-out during combat! Closing the webpage or disconnecting your modem will NOT work either! However to compensate I've made it so if you retreat in the game, the person attacking you is stunned for 2 seconds to give you a better chance of getting away. Also when you die you now get to keep your 3 most valuable items! You will still probably lose any ore, food, money, spare weapons, etc... but at least you will no longer lose an item you'd just spent days saving up for! This means if you keep your spare money in the bank you should now be relatively safe.

25th-Jan - 'Super strength Beer cheat' fixed. Today it came to my attention that by drinking huges amount of beer players were able to make themselves super strong, and then go killing everyone! This has now been fixed so Beer can only increase your strength slightly. Many thanks to the person who told me about this one. If you know of any more cheats/tricks let me know so I can fix them and make RuneScape a fair place for everyone.

Fun stuff

These are pictures that are interesting/fun to look at.

This picture was taken before the introduction of p2p. Its really cool to look because it shows how those who are now millionaires were just simple aspiring millionaires -_-. It shows how they just used to be very friendly, they still are but yea, and open to everyone.

Picture of the thing where you could select to be a pker or non-pker. Very old! Thanks to Hohto for the pic.

This is the famous black hole from the banned person view. The way a visitor saw it was the same. You would buy a Disk of Return it from Throndor in the Dwarfen Mines. There was an 'Spin' option on it. You would spin it to get to the black hole and out of the black hole.

Old 3d renders of RS1. Again, these are old 3d renders, I think before the wilderness came out. So not everything that is currently in RS1 is in these pictures.

Truly a LEGENDARY picture. Everdred, the first person to 99wc and 99 in any stat! He achieved 99 woodcutting on August 28, 2001

This is some weird bug and I do not know much about it. Though, it was not a J-Mod.

some of your information is accurate; some completely wrong.

Andrew, Paul and Constant didn't purchase RS from anybody. Andrew did the majority of the coding with assistance from the others. It says so in your quote "developed by Andrew". DeviousMUD was the original game that eventually developed into RS.

More info on Andrew Gower The Unofficial Andrew Gower Achieve

And if you really care about cyberwars (Castle Games Domain, Andrew's first multiplayer multi board game suite.) I have a whole lot of information regarding that.

Good luck in collecting your facts.

Everdred was the first player to reach level 99 in any skill, it was in woodcutting.

RSC Info

Runescape was opened to the public in january 2001. before that, jagex had a game room with checks, chess, slime wars (my favorite), connect 4, etc. (they took it down a couple of years ago and im still upset they never returned it.)

Here is a map of one of the original planned layout of runescape. atleast i believe it to be, it was posted on the tip.it boards back in 2001 or 2002. i wish i still had the screenshots i saw on here then of runescape as mud game with even simpler graphics than runescape classic.

rsoriginalrunescape.jpg

2. i dont know if the max level was 123, i always assumed it was 99. i guess nobody had their levels high enough to know.

4. If you trained too much, your fatigue reached 100%, you had to go "ingame sleep" until it lowered.

this was added feature, was not always there. it certainly wasn't added until after 2003. it started off you had to find a bed and sleep in it, then andrew introduced sleeping bags.

5. Long long ago, there was the black hole. Players who were banned were sent here, you could go and see them. They were inside a fence, like a zoo. It was later deleted after Jagex decided to just keep them banned from the game.

there was no fence. it was a black screen. every square was black and you couldnt move anywhere. also, if someone else was sent to the black hole at the same time you were, you would be stuck in the same square in the blackness. later, poeple were trying to get blackholed so they could see it, so jagex added Thurdor's Black Hole in the dwarven mine. He let you go in and gave you a disc of returning for 10gp. once in the hole, you spun the disk and it returned you to the surface.

6. You could duel/stake anyone anywhere. When you died, you only lost your STAKED items and you spawned where you died.

this was only in the members version when it opened. it wasnt in the free version. and you respawned in lumbridge. this is why lumbridge was just pretty much duel city for a while.

Stories of how RSC first opened

Cyberwars closed and moved to the newly created game Runescape. View the 2nd story.

Ive never heard of cyberwars.

Second

When RS was first open to the public, you could attack anyone anywhere except Lumbridge. Only those 5 levels above you and below you were you allowed to attack. You could choose your class: Pker or Non-Pker. Soon after, they were more specified: Warrior, Ranger, Miner, or Adventurer. The Wizard "class" was soon added. After this, many small updates were added. Until the wilderness was first introduced.

everyone was pk in the beginning, choosing between non-pk and pk began later. as for choosing specified classes, there was also necromancer. you got a little stat boost in the attributed skill and some items

warrior-wood shield and bronze sword or something and some strength xp or something

rander-range xp and crossbow maybe

miner-miner xp and pick axe

wizard-blue wizard clothes, mind or body runes, and good magic xp

necromancer-black wizard clothes, mind or body runes, and evil magic xp

adventurer-bronze axe and i dont know xp

the xp you recieved, got you to level 2 or 3.

Interesting stuff

in the beginning, you could attack anywhere but lumbridge. the cabbage fields outside of lumbridge were a very popular place to kill unsuspecting new players, it was always a slaughter there. fights back then, you could attack and you could log out in the middle of battle. so it was pretty hard to get killed. plus you could run away after the first hit (later they made it so you had to wait for 3 hits before you could run, which is where poeple came up with the 3 hit kills). people would wait where you logged out for you to come back and youd log in like an hour later and WHAM, you are dead. you lost everything. the bank opened a little later, and it only held gold then, so people mostly kept stuff on mules (characters created to hold stuff).

there was no adamantite in the beginning. it was slowly released piece by piece. same thing with rune after admantite wasn't as amazing anymore -much like dragon armor is doing now (except bluerose13x reached rune smithing and started making rune items before they could really be released. andrew did make it so the rune plate was the reward for dragon quest which was touted by them as the ultimate quest).

red capes added no armor, pretty much useless unless you wanted to get called a noob. some clans wore them to identify themselves in the clan like the razors.

grey capes could be obtained from the highway man, they offered 1 or 2 armor, i cant remember.

then they added the champion's guild which sold blue capes. you could only get in if you had enough quest points. blue capes had one more armor point over grey.

beer could be drunk infinitely to raise your strength to level 99 which was promptly changed after word spread.

there was no buddy list at first, you used to have to type "tell (enter name)" then type your message and it would send to them.

F1 used to be low graphic mode where the runescape screen graphics were reduced 50%. it looked like alternating blacks lines running through the screen but you could still see. it essentially looked like night time.

Al karid was added a week or 2 after the game opened and it was awesome. before that it was just ocean.

other wise

thats wrong it was range that didnt effect combat

range did effect combat at some time. im pretty sure prayer didnt effect it at some time too.

Another addition: When you started RuneScape-Classic, you began as a level 1, not level 3. Brings back a lot of memories...

Depends on which class you picked ...

Really? I chose Warrior, so I don't exactly know about the other classes.

even after buddy list came out for a long time you could still use the tell feature. i used it a lot while pking so i wouldnt have to jump back between mouse and keyboard more than once. it took me forever to get used to it when they updated it so u couldnt do it anymore. lol i remember my brother back then had a get rich quick scheme lol all day he would sit there just creating new rangers and taking the 30 arrows and trading them to his main character. it took him longer than if he just mined or something lol. and back then they werent bronze arrows... they were just "arrows". everyone had like 10 mules.. i had two mules just full of gems lol.

Zonghui never got 123 combat.. he was just the first one the max out melee.

Andrew made RuneScape, then Andrew, Paul and Constant took over RuneScape as Jagex.

The black hole didn't have a fence or anything, it was just a black hole where you stood, couldn't move, just stand there.

That reminds me. There were no such thing as bronze, iron, steel, etc. pickaxes either. There was just the good old pickaxe.

I can help you out with the famous players bit.

Cowchicken was one of the first to reach 99 firemaking. Also had 99 woodcutting and was once ranked #1 on both skills.

Thehate was formally a player with the most 99 skills. Also the first person to reach 99 agility.

M Oldfield was a high ranked player for a long time. Truly one of the first pioneers in overall skilling. I don't know if he ever got #1 overall.

L6vi is a former number 1 player, and was high ranked for a long time. This was however, before Tks took over.

Ltangel, although still playing, was the first to reach 99 crafting. What's amazing is that even a year later no one else had that high of lvl after she accomplished her goal.

Swedemike (I believe) is one of the first to reach 99 thieving.

Don't know about the rest of them. It's been too long since I've stepped into Classic. I can name a few pkers that were famous (and some are probably banned) but I'm too tired right now. Going to go to bed in a few min. :?

Runescape Classic Fact Sheet

Perhaps (I'm 100% sure) A, P, and C bought Runescape from someone. We may never know who that someone is.

----

The following facts are from when RS1 was first opened to when RS2 was launched.

NOT DONE

Nope, Andrew started working on RS in university, and its predessor DeviousMUD

before telekinetic grab came out:

varrock bank had a vault in the basement filled with diamonds and stacks of coins but it was locked gate. these diamonds looked like stereotypical cartoon diamonds with the cut that made them large on top and long point underneath.

varrock museum had historical armor behind a fence inside which had names like "helmet of so and so warrior" and "sword of some guy". now i believe its just iron armor if anything.

Ah, I remember the old RSC days...

BTW

Gaurds were originally used if someone attacked you out of lumbridge, the gaurd would start attacking them.

There's a picture to prove she wasn't the 1st. Notice how she isn't anywhere close to the top.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/hohtava/vanhoi/scr ... gelist.jpg

Here's a picture to prove she wasn't 2nd either. The 1st name is caused by a bug in the hiscores.

Runescape opens in February, 2001. This is the most common story. Since many of RSC players started around this time, it is also the most believed story.

January to be exact.
