ADVERTISEMENT Penguin published "The Truth About Chuck Norris: 400 facts about the World's Greatest Human" in November. Author Ian Spector and two Web sites he runs to promote the book, including http://www.truthaboutchuck.com, are also named in the suit. The book capitalizes on "mythical facts" that have been circulating on the Internet since 2005 that poke fun at Norris' tough-guy image and super-human abilities, the suit said. It include s such humorous "facts" as "Chuck Norris's tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried" and "Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits," the suit said, as well as "Chuck Norris can charge a cell phone by rubbing it against his beard." "Some of the 'facts' in the book are racist, lewd or portray Mr. Norris as engaged in illegal activities," the lawsuit alleges. Norris, who rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s as the star of such films as "The Delta Force" and "Missing in Action," says the book's title would mislead readers into thinking the facts were true. "Defendants have misappropriated and exploited Mr. Norris's name and likeness without authorization for their own commercial profit," said the lawsuit. The suit, filed in Manhattan federal court, seeks unspecified monetary damages for trademark infringement, unjust enrichment and privacy rights. Norris, whose real name is Carlos Ray Norris, claims in the suit he is protective of what his name is associated with. He has recently made U.S. headlines for backing Republican presidential candidate former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. A spokesman for Penguin, owned by Britain's Pearson, was not immediately available for comment. tl;dr - Chuck Norris is suing Penguin publishing for a Chuck Norris facts book. It's great to wake up to something like this. It really has boosted my respect for the man. Hopefully people will stop using the jokes now. Edit- Word choice. EDIT: I hope Chuck wins, then maybe people will stop with these annoying jokes that haven't been funny in 5 years. EDIT2: The website in the news article, truthaboutchuck.com, isn't working. Maybe the owners already took it down to appease the great god Chuck. Tom Clancy has to pay royalties to Chuck Norris because "The Sum of All Fears" is the name of Chuck Norris' autobiography. Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door. :lol: But yeah I can understand his stance, since so many racist and other jokes were made about him, it wasn't any longer funny. People are profiting off his name, from what was supposed to be just a quick laugh. Unless they pay a share of the profits to him and cut off the lame stuff, they should just back off. He's been quoted before as saying he actually finds the whole thing funny, and when Maddox published The Alphabet of Manliness a whole chapter on Chuck Norris was included, and he never got sued. I guess I can see where he's coming from, though: a respectable publisher should be able to ride this meme in a better way than by copy and pasting a bunch of jokes that were posted online; at least Maddox had enough class to write his own material. It's not a matter of Chuck standing up for himself or getting back for the jokes, this is all a matter of copyright. The following videos all have Chuck Norris in them, and have been aired on TV, with his permission, and in some way include these jokes or his internet fame, yet he has gone along with it all. Mountain Dew Commercial Chuck Norris approved commerical Chuck norris on a talk show about the facts See, this isn't a matter of Chuck disliking the jokes, it's just he doesn't want other making profit out of his name without his consent.
