Knuckle cracking- arthritis or not?

A single event is not enough to cause damage to the joint, although there is a hypothesis that prolonged joint stress due to cracking knuckles may eventually lead to a higher risk of joint damage. However, the long-term consequences of this practice have not been studied thoroughly, and the scientific evidence is inconclusive. The common parental advice "cracking your knuckles gives you arthritis" is not supported by any evidence, but habitual knuckle crackers are more likely to have hand swelling and lower grip strength.

Yea, cavitation, that's what I was talking about. Hmm, about that hand swelling...is it in old age or just general swelling? Because I;ve cracked my knuckles for years and haven't swelled at all, if it's in old age I would just expect it anyways lol.

Wiki can be edited by anyone, I could go in there and type cracking your Joints causes [developmentally delayed]ation.

Dont believe everything you see, ive looked into it and what ive seen theres no signs this is true.

I shall try to find the things I looked at a while back. But just ask your local docter, It really doesnt have any effect at all.

As far as I'm concerned, I always crack my knees and occasionally my jaw. I also broke my arm recently, and the doctor said something about a broken bone really increasing the chances of arthritis.

All in all, the whole "cracking your knuckles gets you arthritis" is probably just an urban legend.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

Probably invented by mom's pissed at their kids' incessant cracking and popping :D

I could ask my doctor, but I don't need to go for a long time to come, few months at least, and it's not the small-town, walk-in-and-ask type (Navy medical services, rather impersonal)

different arguements i found -

Cracking your knuckles wears away the cartilage between the joints over a long period of time. This is one of the causes of arthritis. Other causes of arthritis are completely unrelated, like for example, you can inherit it from your parents, or get it because of a disease like Lupus. So, I guess if you might get it anyway, and you might not know if it was your's or your parents fault, go ahead and crack away.

No, of course it doesnt. A study focused on 300 habitual knuckle crackers found no evidence linking knuckle cracking and arthritis. Chronic crackers did suffer other harm, including soft tissue damage and loss of grip strength. This damage is usually minor, however, and cracking your knuckles actually has some benefits -- you'll feel looser and enjoy more mobility in your joints immediately after popping.

Don't listen to those people that tell you cracking your knuckles will cause you to have arthritis. At this point it's just a speculation, not wild, but certainly not founded on anything but misconceptions. All you're doing is playing with the physiology and chemistry of your body a bit. There are good and bad sides to this. Here's a rather complete site if you want to read more (which keeps me from typing it all out): howstuffworks.

I thought it's natural and even good to crack your joints once in a while :(

I can crack my back like 3 times a day, knuckles are easier to reload, I can do that maybe 5x/day.

Easiest to reload? I guess jaw bones. I could crack these annoying little things all day.

Thanks for the link though, didn't know it could be harmful. I'll definitely look into it.

please tell me how to crack one's jaw bone properly or i'm gonna hurt myself trying.

Arthritis? No real edvidence of that whatsoever. Other hand injuries like swelling, lower grip strength etc? More likely. Probably best not to get too caught up in the habit.

No difference in arthritis rates in knuckle crackers and non-knuckle crackers, yet other problems precipitated: [1]

No link between knuckle cracking and arthritis yet other hand problems: [2]

No higher incidence of arthritis in knuckle crackers yet other hand problems: [3]

A doctor performed a 50 year controlled experiment on himself, cracking one hand daily and leaving the other as a control. After the 50 years, there was no evidence of arthritis in either hand: [4]

No correlation between habitual knuckle cracking and arthritis: [5]

Someone I know used to crack his knuckles alot when he was young, but he got abnormal big amounts of fluid in his fingers so he had to go to the hospital to remove it.

(It could have been mentioned in this thread, I dont know if there's a special word for something like that)

He told the story to someone that cracked his knuckles, to warn him :P

Heh, I can't crack anything and don't feel like trying. My cousin tried to get me to do it once, by taking my hand herself and trying to force my knuckles down  . It hurt, probably 'cause she had no sense of what was actually happenign to my hand.

Although, when I was learning the kip-up, sometimes I landed hard with my knees bent as far as they could possibly go and the force made them crack. That hurt a bit afterwards too :P .

Heh, I crack my knuckles, jaw, toes, wrists... everywhere that can be cracked, I crack it *gives a "don't go there" look to some certain people*. I crack my fingers all different ways, whether its pushing them down or pulling gently or pushing the middle sideways. sometimes I count how many times I can crack my fingers in a short span.

I really hope cracking knuckles doesn't have a long term affect. I mean, I think wikipedia is right about their short term causes of slightly weaker grip and maybe mild pain. but I'm really screwed if it can lead to big problems in the future.

Thought I'd mention this, whenever I kick/move my lower leg forward fast then my knees always "pop" every time. They don't crack, but it like... Pops  Anybody know what it is?

Yea mine do the same thing. Probably the same as knuckles.

I've been cracking my knuckles for years and I don't notice a difference, yet.

Except for my left index finger. I can dislocate and pop it back in at will, which probably would do some damage to my finger because if you do it too much the joint hurts after a while. It's still cool to do it and feel the little 'pop' when the joint goes back into place.

Well if it does cause arthritis, im doomed to a life without hands. I constantly crack my knuckles and I can crack them by clenching my fist tightly.

I've been cracking my knuckles a lot for the past like five or six years. and by a lot i mean like all 10 fingers every 5 minutes. Now even before i started doing it i had low finger strength, but i can already feel my knuckes swell and my grip strength weaken even further. My knuckles are also abnormally large, but i think thats because its a family trait, not because i crack them all the time. I don't think cracking your knuckles gives you arthritis, but it definitatly effects your finger/grip strength

As near as I remember from Anatomy and Physiology cracking your knuckles by pressing them in and downward does not appear to affect occurence out arthritis at all. However, popping them by pulling them out does seem to cause a higher rate of occurance. The reason is that arthritis usually is caused by repeated damage to connective tissue. Hyper-extension, which is any time that you force connective tissue to move beyond its maximum range of motion (pulling a bone out of the socket, bending your finger backwards beyond what it can extend itself, etc.) can cause damage. That is the reason why arthritis often develops in the shoulders of baseball players and around the site of serious sports injuries... 'least that's what my professor said.

"He is no fool who gives up that which he can not keep to gain that which he can not lose."

--Jim Elliot

"You must picture me alone in that room in Magdalen, night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet. That which I greatly feared had at last come upon me. In the Trinity Term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England. I did not then see what is now the most shining and obvious thing; the Divine humility which will accept a convert even on such terms. The Prodical Son at least walked home on his own two feet. But who can duly adore that love which will open the high gates to a prodigal who is brought in kicking, struggling, resentful, and darting his eyes in every direction for a chance of escape? The words compelle intrare, compel them to come in, have been so abused by wicked men that we shudder at them; but, properly understood, they plumb the depth of the Divine mercy. The hardness of God is kinder than the softness of men, and His compulsion is our liberation."

--C.S.Lewis

I've got weird joints as it is. I'm double jointed in my arms. I can crack almost all my knuckles in my hands. Can even do it without waiting for the gasses to 'reload' in my thumbs and could crack them all day if I wanted.

Been doing that since I was a little kid and it's never affected me.

My ankles are quite strange too. They crack a lot when I walk, run or stand on my tiptoes. It's quite annoying and I've read up on it a bit. It could either be the gasses building up or it could be something to do with the ligament or tendon snapping back in and out of place. I'm not worried about it however since it doesn't cause any discomfort.

I don't really crack my knuckles as much now, but most of the replies seem to say that there is no damage, so I have pretty much nothing to worry about. But I wonder why when you first start cracking a joint, it hurts more than when you do it more. :?

Also, someone before asked this already, but how DO you pop your jaw properly!?
