For the people who think peace or war is always the answer.

Yes, War is somtimes a good idea

Yes, Peace is sometimes a good idea

BEFORE you call me a hippy I guess most would use. Everyone in my family was military or close to it except for my dad. My mom is a VA nurse. I support the troops 100 percent. I tryed to join the marines. I have past depression so that didn't work out so well due to getting medical files was almost impossible for my medication when I was younger. I am not against anyone who wants peace. Love is one of the greatest things around. Most guys will disagree (I am male).

Discussion:

The problem with war for every type of setting is the problem that sometimes both sides really don't want a war. I mean I really don't want a war with iran. We probably would get them to stop making weapons of mass destruction. Why risk more americans dying. Troops are not really allowed to have a political view. They work for the government i'm guessing most of them would vote republic but they are just obeying rules. Before you act like you want to go to war with a country ask some of the guys in the military how much they really like being away from there freinds, family, and even girlfreinds (if they ever get to see them again (sad reality)).

My navy buddy just got sent to japan. He has not yet seen action and most likly won't because hes in the navy. He will be there for 2 years. My sisters husband has been to afghanastan fighting 3 times all for year long sessions and is about to go back again after his officer training is finished.

My sister has a hard time being alone and not that she has a kid it will almost be harder for her. I told you my mom was a VA nurse earlier she tryed so hard not to get me to join the military due to mental health problems, losing a limb, risk of dying, ect. She see military personal who are retired now all the time who have tons of problems and have lost there buddies.

That is my part on why peace is good sometimes. Missing a ton but creating a general idea.

Why WAR is a GREAT idea sometimes.

War should be a very sensitive topic it shouldn't be said that we should pave over there country after we nuke them. Cmon guys do you really want to kill all of them that badly? Thats like saying i'm going to kill your whole family and make your house a street. I mean you look like a wuss saying that (I am calling this immature becuase I used to think this way).

Genocide seems like the answer sometimes but rarly has a good outcome. Every country that has thought genocide was a good idea has failed and was over taken by many different countrys. Germany used to be America. They were the world power taking out tanks 10-1 during ww2.

WW2 was best time for the world to step in and stop and thats what made America a world power. I mean I hear the jew jokes all the time those are so boring, same with the yo momma jokes. Jews have a right to live no matter how much you guys hate it. I am personally christian so flaming me with jewish jokes won't hurt me (just make you look stupid).

six and half million jews were exterminated. This is always a good time to step in and help.

This war does make the U.S. look like a bully but for the most part there was some genocide by Saddam Hussien. This really started after a assination attempt in 1982 on Saddum. Every country that trys to control the world will fail. Thats a problem with this country but we don't force people to live under our rule. I understand that if were there during the voting system is undergoing we do pose a threat to them still. We know we don't want to kill those kind of people but those poeple are so confused right now. In America we are not told what to think like many communistic countries. So when you say things like peace will work are you kidding me? It will not always work. African children are being recruited into fighting at age 10. This is happening more and more aroundn the world now. They don't know the meaning of peace only life and death. So explaining peace to them would be really hard. We don't want to kill all of them but they should have more of a choice.

This is debating peace or war. I just got it started.

On the side that nuking and paving over a country is never the right solution.

I have nothing against war personally. There are times in the course of human affairs in which it is inevitable. I wish that it weren't the case, but it is. However with that said I am only willing to take up arms to defend my home town. I will never fight except within the smallish valley that I call home. I would be willing to serve my country if it called for me, but in a non-combatant role only.

"He is no fool who gives up that which he can not keep to gain that which he can not lose."

--Jim Elliot

"You must picture me alone in that room in Magdalen, night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet. That which I greatly feared had at last come upon me. In the Trinity Term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England. I did not then see what is now the most shining and obvious thing; the Divine humility which will accept a convert even on such terms. The Prodical Son at least walked home on his own two feet. But who can duly adore that love which will open the high gates to a prodigal who is brought in kicking, struggling, resentful, and darting his eyes in every direction for a chance of escape? The words compelle intrare, compel them to come in, have been so abused by wicked men that we shudder at them; but, properly understood, they plumb the depth of the Divine mercy. The hardness of God is kinder than the softness of men, and His compulsion is our liberation."

--C.S.Lewis

No offence here, because your family's probably been touched by war more than mine has, but your views on the whole thing are still a little naive.

PEace is the way to go.

If there is world peace, why bother with wars?

HIPPIE! lol. Just kidding, mate.

OK, let's first examine a few fundamental facts about the nature of mankind to prove your second part of the statement wrong. "If there is world peace, why bother with wars?"

[1] states things about war.

during the time men live without a common Power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called Warre; and such a warre, as is of every man, against every man

Man NATURALLY warred with one another without common power. And who is to say that the common power in question is any less apt to get into fights and wars with other leaders of the world? After all, above the leader of a country, there is no other mortal Power on earth that they can listen to for surefire guidance. (It is possible that God might speak to them, but seeing as this isn't related, we'll disregard the possibility) so isn't it natural that people will always get into war?

Besides, what on earth could ever CAUSE world peace? There will always be fighting over limited resources. Economic principles of scarcity says so. And if a dictator takes over the entire world, there will be rebels and insurgents to declare war upon him. There will NEVER be world peace. EVER.

Also, a remarkably large amount of times, Peace is nothing but a funny little word that can't be used. So is diplomacy. You think, during WWII, that we should have marched up to Hitler's house and 'talked it all over' with him and that we would somehow magically abolish his ten year reign of terror, or make him let go of the millions of people he was killing? Or make him simply forget his world conquest? Do you believe for half a second that we ever could have deterred his mad quest in the first place? I don't think so. Too many of these people who start wars have too much of a negative history, and talking simply won't negate it.

Love is one of the greatest things around. Most guys will disagree (I am male).

It's interesting to note that the vast majority of murders, genocides, wars, executions, etc. were ordered and carried out by males.

Many Western males are brought up in a manner that makes them laugh at thoughts of love and sharing. At an early age, males are taught to destroy their opponents for honour and victory. Aggressive war-like sports such as American football and the Ultimate Fighter tend to reinforce these testosterone-driven sentiments.

WW2 was best time for the world to step in and stop and thats what made America a world power.

The argument is that with world peace there would have been no war in the first place, so no need for America to "step in".

Man NATURALLY warred with one another without common power.

Although it is a natural desire, most evident in males, that does not mean it cannot change. Humans evolve -- we do not live and think the same as our distant prehistoric ancestors.

The real problems with world peace are: its improbability, economic losses, overpopulation and drawbacks to science (ie: no more discoveries provoked by warfare).

I'm a bit of a hippie myself, and as much as I would like world peace, I know that the consequences we have to endure to reach it are not those that the rest of the world would be willing to accept.

The destruction of all humanity.

No humans, no wars.

"Our own planet, in which philosophers are apt to take a parochial and excessive interest, was once too hot to support life, and will in time be too cold. After ages during which the earth produced harmless trilobites and butterflies, evolution progressed to the point at which it generated Neros, Genghis Khans, and Hitlers. This, however, is a passing nightmare; in time the earth will become again incapable of supporting life, and peace will return." - Bertrand Russell

War imo is the worst thing about world. Yep the worst, nothing worse than war.

Exept maybe walking on a dog poo with your best shoes and far away from anything to clean it off... :wall:

Aanyways, I quess it can't be prevented anytime soon, lots of things would have to be removed first, like the religions for instance.

I'm getting sick of this flaming, and I'll be damned if you keep on spitting in the faces of so many people, and I take it lying down.

Religion hasn't started a legitimate war in seven hundred years. Started. If you have a counterexample, please say so. (FYI, don't bring up War on Terror. Jihad is a term defined for a Muslim man to DEFEND his faith, not impose it on others or 'eradicate infidels'.)

Religion on a whole has caused 2,000,000X more peace than it has war.

Flamers and asshats like you are the people that end up like Hitler; biased and hating towards a religious group because you were fed incorrect information or were too judgemental on biased evidence.

I have seen alot of people say "keep your religion at the door".

Yet when one thinks a certain way because of his religion, your basically telling him to stay out of the entire conversation which would be discrimitive towards him or her.

Challenge religion if you want, but being baised and say keep it at the door, as if it would have no value or even negative funcationality towards those one may precieve to influence, then it shows a lack of intelligence on the asker.

If Religion is evil, then its the human who made it evil, not the religion.

I'd agree. I won't bring up religion (and I don't) unless people flame it. I just want to be respected, because frankly it's the dearest thing to me on the face of this planet.

We're a bunch of hippies here on Tipit. But I still don't understand, USMC, how war is ever better. Even if it makes countries superpowers, 50 million or more people died due to the world wars. And death by way of another person is never justified. Never. No matter how many people one person has killed, sure, make his life awful, but you can't rightly kill him.

I guess you didn't watch Osama's 9/11 video? He said he's retaliating because of the western armies in Afghanistan and other areas with US military presence are also killing hundreds and hundreds of civilians, women and children.

I don't agree with that scale of retaliation, but at least you can't say he wasn't defending his faith if civilians of his own faith were getting killed.

Religion on a whole has caused 2,000,000X more peace than it has war.

Then you would perhaps cite a source. Funny number, because religion has been definitely the cause of way, way more than 2,000,000 unnecessary deaths in the world.

Not least, the christian religion just a few hundred years ago. Using Bible verses like

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live"

"A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones"

Witch-hunt trials alone took the lives of some hundreds of thousands of people (and it doesn't end there, in 2000 an american student was expelled from her school for 'casting a spell' on her teacher and 'hexing')

And just... Don't get started on how Islam started "peacefully" expanding to nations surrounding the first arab settlements (and massacring those who wouldn't convert), or the numerous christian wars and even crusades sanctioned by the Pope himself which led to so many unnecessary murders.

Other religions than the abrahamic ones? Ok, they were fairly peaceful. The samurais didn't use buddhism or shintoism and make anyone convert to it's beliefs. The Jewish religion is in fact a quite peaceful one (not judging by some brutal texts in the Talmud or Old Testament, but by their actions), so is Taoism, Hinduism, etc..

Not surprisingly, the two largest religions (christianity, islam) also have caused the biggest massacres and wars in human history. Mostly not even for the motive of being 'pious' but stealing other countries' resources and land.

You might be right there that religion hasn't started war lately, altought I have been under influense that the fightings at israel had thing or two to do with religion. But even thought it seems most of wars don't start primaly because of religion, it still has big role in many wars.

The philophy with religions itself is dangerous (Talking about the two main religions here) . Raven, you posted some time ago post about mocking atheism and saying it was dangerous to mankind or something. I have opposite view on things: religions are great tool at war, don't you think religion has nothing to do with muslims being brainwashed to believe they go to heaven with 70 virgins if they die while killing infidels?

Christianity has same kind of philopsophy. You can basically do anything, kill as many people at war, because in the end god will forgive you, if you just believe in him and life is just a stepping stone to heaven.

If you can be brainwashed that there is a magical old man up in the sky, you can also be brainwashed that you are instanly in heaven if you die at holy war. Perfect example being islam.

And in the general, religious people tend to be very strong about their believes, and many times it goes too far. Islam being perfect example of todays world and altought chirstianity is not so bad anymore it used to be as bad.

Reminder by the way: I did say religions are one thing that is blocking the way to peaceful world, but it's not the only one certainly.

Reality is hundreds of times more beautiful and more interesting than delusions. Fairy tales just tend to be easier to follow than the wonderful intricacies of life.

Back to the original topic, and then to religion...

Humans have been killing each other since there have been humans. We are violent creatures at heart, and this can be shown by going to a day care and watching the youngsters beat the tar out of each other over toys.

There will be no way to eliminate war - there is no way to "Give Peace a Chance" - if we do so, some asshat will take advantage of all the idiots who gave him a chance to kill other people. That's just how humanity works, and the asshats who ruin it for everyone else need to be stopped by the old-fashioned method of making peace.

"If you want peace, prepare for war" was originally said by Julius Caesar to a bunch of country bumpkins who wanted peace with the Gauls. The Gauls didn't want to give peace a chance because pillaging and killing people is a lot of fun when you get to ride around on a horse and not bathe, and so the peace-loving Romans had to fight back if they didn't want to die.

"Si vis pacem, para bellum." (9mm Parabellum came from this quote)

Back to religion.

Religion has been a positive influence in my life, and I think it has for many people. In fact, if you ask pretty much anyone who practices a religion, you'll find that everyone who does so has been positively impacted by it. However, religion's hold on people has made it very easy for asshats to manipulate for their own twisted ends. The shaman witch doctors of ancient times did their thing for power, Osama bin Laden called jihad to destabilize the West, Pope Urban II did it with the Crusades for fun and giggles, et cetera. Religion isn't the problem - it's the people who manipulate others with religion that are bad.

Nice!

There will never be a break in the cycle. There is no such thing as Peace, honestly, think about it. War is a fact of life, there always will be war and there always will be untill Christ comes back.

He's probably sitting on the couch laughing with Penn and Teller (I love that show) right now, but ah well. War, even under the watchful eyes of God, was still rampant. Those Israelites were watched like a hawk by God, and they still had to massacre the Canaanites, the Midianites, and other assorted dudes.

Ah, yes but there is no such thing as absolute Chaos. Everything is obedient to God. They were wipped out because they deserved it, to us it's horrible. But consider this.. Other nations would come in ( assyria) kill the men and boys and enslave the womenand children and make the nation they just conquered a living hell for all..in a way, By doing this, God is showing them mercy.
