My new laptop

I'm so thrilled of my new laptop. I've never had one before and my friends always boast about thier laptop. But, well my laptop came as a wonderful gift from my grandparents. It's an Acer Aspire 4520 and it's totally stunningand has a great design. Windows Vista is user friendly, very well designed, and well put-out. I like the built in webcam and mic. Also in my free time I like to play the mahjong game on it. But does anyone have a laptop they'd like to share about???

Lol.

Windows Vista

FTW. =D>

If you upgrade to 2GB of memory, you'll love it even more. ;) Vista's really good, but needs a lot of resources to run well. But that laptop looks really nice, :)

Unfortunately, I don't have my own laptop, but I get to use my mom's Sony VGN-FZ140E/B when I need to use a laptop...

I remember when I got my first laptop. A 12 inch iBook G4. It was amazing for the time. I remember Runescape music and sound affects didn't work for like a whole year. If it were not for that laptop I probably wouldn't have gotten into Runescape and I wouldn't be on these forums. So yeah.. I guess it is really important to me. I still use the same laptop and its quite frankly a hunk of junk now, it only has 215mb of RAM   . I need to get a Macbook. Congratulations on the new computer.

On a side note I have some bad news for you.

yeah i've heard of that. this guy at office max said 3GB on a laptop like mine that runs vista will run very well. And yeah the looks of this is amazing. This laptop was I think $541 at Walmart which I thought was a great price( I'm glad it didn't burn my grandparents pockets that much). But It reallly is affordable and I can look into getting a cruiser flash drive to get some more memory on this for like my pics and stuff. Speaking of which I can probably get some pics of this once I get a hold of my digital camera back home.

Wow it's that much in it's time eh! but I can probably get this laptop to last a long time with my knowledge of computers and the nearest computer store.

[hide=Vista vs Mac debate]-No, FTW. Windows = cheaper than Mac for better components, and system tweakers like me can't really do well on a Mac. Macs are best for users who don't need to change anything in the OS much and just need an easy-to-use computer that does basic things, and who also have deep pockets. (They're also pretty good for certain high-end applications..)

-But the main thing is: Everything I do besides basic productivity functions won't work on a Mac unless I boot into Windows, which defeats the point of having a Mac. Plus, my new ~$1200 Vista/Ubuntu desktop would have cost me $2600 had I bought a Mac Pro with identical specs.

-I use Macs all the time at school. They're manageable, but I always feel much more at home in Vista than in Mac OS.

-Mighty Mouse. 'Nuff said.[/hide]

Laptops can last a while.. My mom's 5-year-old laptop with an Athlon XP 1800+, XP Home and 512mb of memory still works perfectly, except for the battery (which is completely dead)..

And her Windows 95 laptop doesn't have any problems either. 200mhz Pentium anyone?

I got a new desktop about a year ago, don't remember any particularly awesome experiences.

Vista is FTW, no doubt about that. As said, the mighty mouse is fail, how dumb is it to have no right click? I know you can have other kinds of mice connected to it, but the fact that it comes by default is sad.

Macs are for people who know hardly anything, and do not plan on knowing anymore than hardly anything, about computers. But things only for mac like Final Cut Pro are pretty good, I'm not letting my love of Vista override logic.

Bought a Packard Bell laptop 1.5 years ago.. Still as good as new, has 2.2ghz DualCore intel, 2GB of ram, 250GB hard-drive (and 500GB external), plus a 128MB inbuilt ATI card. Cost $1300

Wouldn't agree they get obsolete fast, don't torture it & it could last for a long, long time.

P.S: Installed XP and Linux on the laptop after about 5 hours of using Vista. Nothing warrants the huge RAM consumption exchanged for minimal extra functions... XP does just fine.

When I say obsolete I mean that, with no real way to upgrade (other than ram), most laptops will get outdated as far as specs come as new hardware goes. And, while a desktop you can upgrade whenever it starts getting worse.

The other thing is that usually laptops don't have the game graphics card technology as desktops do. For example, they might have an 8800GO or whatever, which will go obsolete faster than an 8800GT.

I can't play any games worth jack on my laptop, the lag is too horrible because of the weak graphics card.

Don't know anyone else with a laptop who can game properly, either. I do know 1 person who owns an AlienWare laptop, but those are specifically created for mobile gaming anyways..

I want to say the dell XPS laptops are nice, but honestly they are so big that you may as well get a desktop

Mighty Mouse is a double click. It detects which side you click, it doesn't have to have two separate buttons.

That does sound annoying though. However, you can use any USB mouses so it doesn't matter.

Mac is in no way the "stupid" person's computer as someone who doesn't know about computers would buy a £1,200 iMac for example now would they?

I'd think that they would, consider they are a. overpaying on hardware and b. paying for something they can't upgrade.

Mac's are the standard for companies and media work (graphic, video editing, audio editing etc) You will see more and more macs in the future.

Not really, even though apple would like you to think that. A lot of graphic editing that directly relates to fields like game design are done on PC's (obviously) and at least in the company I work in (doing web design) we use PC's as well. That being said there is nothing a mac can do for the graphic design industry that a windows based PC can't do. I'd go as far to say "linux" as well, although I believe it is limited for photoshop.

Vista is not the best, and Microsoft are bringing out Windows 7 which is basically the exact same as Vista with a few upgrades.

So what, you'd want them to just bog down an OS with more features? Lepord wasn't that different than OS X, and had some nasty bugs as well. In reality it really was just a graphical upgrade with a few features.

FYI apple is working on a new OS as well, from what I understand. I doubt it'll be much different.

Actually mac's where the first PC's (If you count as DOS as a PC then its Windows) and the original mouse was one click so it isn't standard for a two button click mouse.

Actually I believe it was a printing company that had the first PC, but I can't for the life of me remember which. Also DOS is very much an OS, just not with a GUI.

Final Cut Pro is THE BEST video editing program. It may be a huge program (60 gig) but it is worth it. Anyway "rant" over onto the topic!

Subjective. I know a lot who use Sony vegas pro or Adobe after effects.

Sorry, I really don't want to get involved in this MAC VS WINDOWZ [cabbage] but some of this was just nonsense. Either way get a mac if you wish, but just remember that it is limited to what you can upgrade. As far as Macbooks go they honestly aren't bad (maybe a bit expensive, I dunno) but thats just because you aren't upgrading a laptop anyways.

And it is true (from what I've heard at least) that mac's user base is growing, but its not like its any sort of threat. Most just want the computability with windows and Direct X.

Yeah, laptops are awesome :D I got one too:

http://blog.pricegrabber.com/blogbytes/ ... -m1530.jpg

XPS-M1530 is nice :)

Yeah, they are pretty nice. So expensive though, I think it'd cost like $3,000-$4,000 to mimic my $1,000 PC. (which most parts save for the video card were bought a year ago, so its closer to $800 today. This is including OS though, without its like $700). Hell, I don't even think a laptop can go up against a 2.7ghz dual core, 9600GT and 3Gb of ram. 8-)

Most people when they buy a Mac are buying them for their quality and are willing to pay extra for that. I know I could of got they same specs (2.4ghz intel core duo, 2gb of ram, GeForce 8600M GT 256mb) from a windows operated laptop for $1000 dollars less then what I payed for, for my macbook pro but I wanted something of quality. How often do you hear people praze their vista operated computer?

As far as upgrading goes I know its possible, I had a friend upgrade his harddrive in his macbook pro, and I'm sure if you where to take your mac to an apple store I'm sure they'd upgrade it for you.

Photoshop has always preformed best on the Mac OS, but the new photoshop CS4 is supposedly only going to support 64bit on Windows and not Macs. So the tide is turning... :(

I think you've got the wrong idea about Macs..

I've used both Macs and PCs in the past. Macs I've mainly used at school but also in my Photoshop and Illustrator classes. I currently have both programs on my PC and I would much rather have a Mac when using them. I honestly think Macs are far better when it comes to working with high end programs like those. Yes, I'll agree Macs are a little more user friendly to a certain extent but some things are easier done on a PC. Basically they both have their advantages and disadvantages but I would not even come close to saying Macs are for people who know little to none about computers. As far as not being able to right click, buy a damn mouse with 2 buttons. The standard mouse for a Mac only has 1 button, but I've seen Macs at school with 2 button mouses (with the right click working). Otherwise hold down the stupid alt key (or whatever it is, I don't remember) and it works exactly the same as a right click.

Also, Vista is terrible. I hate running it and if I had the money, I would buy a copy of XP as quickly as possible.. Sadly I'm broke :(

People will download MP3's and hurt artists with no remorse, but would pay $hundreds of dollars for an operating system made by a company that has hundreds of billions of dollars in capital, even though both are just as easy to D/L. Always baffles me.

But yes, XP is overall better than Vista if you compare the features.. I still have Vista on my tabletop computer, it's not that great at all. I especially hate how just running the OS takes your graphics card power and plenty, plenty of RAM.

Vista is nice if you want DX 10, but other than that its not really worth it. It still is fine though if it comes with a new desktop, if the desktop is decent that is.
