The Chat Censor

Recommended Posts

I'm gonna keep this short and sweet. Kind of like a Jolly Rancher. Anyways, I made this before the Great Forum Crash of '08, and here it is again, shorter, because I really don't feel like doing it all over again. Moving right along...

Our Censor is stupid. Try saying "gash." Yeah. You can't, can you? You can say "pee" but not "urine," and for some reason, "fetus" too. Before this is perceived as a rant, I'm suggesting a sliding bar in the Options Tab that controls what words pass the Censor. Very simple.

It will have 2 or 3 settings. Child, Teen, and (optionally) Mature. I don't care if Mature is implemented or not, but if you could, do it. Simply, no profanity in Child, mild profanity (damn, crap, [wagon]) in Teen, and all profanity in Mature. Everyone's happy.

It's not that hard, Jagex.

A good, mention-worthy argument was made by Ouchy_S:

RuneScape is designed for teenagers, and I'm sure the majority of the community are teenagers. We are old enough to make the decision whether we want to have the Chat Filter on or off and we are old enough to look after ourselves and handle most situations.

Its a little odd for this update for JaGex to do...

Still people can abuse from it and still 12 year olds do accounts of 30+ Years old option...

I say it will be the worst update and its useless for me.

I'll support this... But only because of words that I feel shouldn't be censored, due to how they're more likely to reference innocent things, as opposed to the ugly & shameful things that people try to link them with. :geek:

I'll never really understand censorship in any context.

I mean, you can say WTF, but not the F word. Everyone know's what WTF actually means, so you're still basically swearing.

I always laugh when I read a newspaper that says things like F*** with the stars included. What, are they thinking young people will look at that and guess some other non-offensive word? As if there's any difference between that and actually just printing the word... we all know what it means anyway.

Including stars or abbreviating is exactly the same as just saying the offensive word outright anyway.... the meaning isnt' hidden which is why i find censorship completely pointless.

Some things should just stay dead...

Think of all the little children, who aren't all that smart (though there are a few...). They'll just set the bar to the highest level possible, and Jagex will be getting some very very angry letters...

The censor is there, so Jagex doesn't get sued for not having one. The math behind this doesn't add up, but it does, somehow...

Also, The censor is half the reason why Rule 1 is there to begin with.

Need a new signature....perhaps...

I think this is a good idea but i wouldn't be bothered if it never came around.

The only thing that really bothers me about the censor is when you type in a completely harmless word (or you mis-type) and send it and it comes out as asterisks you could get reported, for something completely harmless that people take the wrong way. When your typing it should come out as asterisks after you press the space bar on the typing bar to type a new word. So at least then you can't get reported for something that's completely harmless.

Confused much?

Though it is annoying to have someone think you're swearing, you can't get reported if the words are censored. As Jagex stated numerous times, there is no need to report if offensive language is censored, as the censor has done its job. It's only when someone tries to evade the censor (good luck  ) that they can be reported.

As to the idea, though, if it were ever implemented it would have to mean that someone on the "mature" setting can't report for offensive language. If someone drops an F-Bomb, they shouldn't be held responsible for your choice to view offensive content.

I couldn't say that better myself. It is too true. 8-)

TBH, it leaves me laughing too.

Heck, maybe they could disable 'Option 1' when the filter is effectively disabled? :-s

They already have a child setting: Try creating an account under 13, you're stuck with quickchat.

Yikes! That's like Jagex is outrightly deciding you can't ever have normal chat abilities! :(

No company can get sued for allowing swearing.

If a kid sets the bar to Teen or Mature, the parent has no right to get mad and send angry letters, as there is a Child option. What there could be is a password the parent sets so it stays on Child or Teen. And there would be no reason for sending a letter -- Jagex doesn't look at them anyway.

i agree because i just learned my name gets blocked if you put an r before bob, i mean cmon its my friggen name. anyways the select a dif option would get abused by 12 year olds as someone else said, there would be a need to have them list a number for there parent and something like that idk, itd get bypassed somehow but it might help

A lot of parents would not be happy about it, cause suddenly their child has learned a few more words than they'd like. Jagex probably doesn't want to have to deal with hundreds of angry letters from parents. So why not keep it like it is? Sure it needs to be refined still, but they're not getting any angry letters about kids swearing are they?

This the 21st century. RS isn't the only place a kid can learn bad words. Chances are, popular culture has already tainted their minds with filth, so parents can't blame it all on Jagex.

There should be no barrier to this. Look at Facebook or MySpace. You can say all those words and you only have to be 14, and RS's age limit is 13. Sure there are younger kids in RS, but are there not younger kids in Facebook? In MySpace? I see nothing wrong with it, unless that one year makes such a huge difference.

Theres no need for you to cuse anyway. But some words are censored that shouldn't be. Anyway why would people want to hear your filthy language? You can cuse and it's starred and you can't get reported for it as Jagex said. So dumb idea no support. No one wants to hear peoples filthy mouth and it's not needed at all.

I know many of you are saying that the parents can't blame Jagex for their kids behavior, but this will. Ever hear of a scape-goat? Or Jack Thompson? He blames video games in general for 99.9% of all killings and high school shootings and the like. He says that video games should not have violence in them at all, that parents are doing the right thing banning video games. But the real problem lies in the parents. Parents don't monitor what their children are playing, and decide that it's entirely the video games' faults for bad behavior, not their own negligence.

So if parents find out that Jagex has allowed for a censor removal aspect to the game, then chances are many parents would decide to shift the blame to Runescape and Jagex before taking the heat themselves.

Parents are, after all, human too. I'm not saying these people are bad parents, I'm saying that there is a chance of them not wanting to seem like a bad parent for not monitoring their children's internet behavior.

This would work. (I'm really tired of stuff like suck and crap being censored) But this could easily be changed, the only way to ensure that your 13+ would be make a skill testing question that anyone 13+ with an average iq should be able to answer. Also, you should also have to answer a question when you create an acount. (put something under the answer box like, "Parents, please don't answer this for your child, this game is ment for teenagers 13+"). Thats the solution for age identification.

With more internet-savvy kids out there, all they'll do is Google search the answer. I don't think there's any real way to keep underage kids out of Runescape.

Well then, if Jagex is ever did this, (which they WON'T... they love their little kids of late), then parents would have to toughen up and see that it's their own freakin fault. Not many people are gonna send a letter ALL THE WAY to Europe, just to complain that their kids are now exposed to language they were likely exposed to from many other sources anyways. It's a flaw in human nature that I HATE, :XD: throwing the blame on others. umm... [/end rant]. Jagex isn't gonna implement this.
