The Real Life Factor

• A full out war is today, & you're pumped. Every clan has been talking about it for weeks. The two biggest powerhouses, previously avoiding eachother, finally clashing in a Clan War. You're the leader of one of the powers, & twenty minutes are left until the start of the war. The two clans are sitting in the Bounty Hunter bank, spamming the heck out of eachother, spam towers never dropping below the top of the screen.
   
   
   
  Then your boss calls. "We've got an emergency. Get down here ASAP or you'll drive home with a pink slip."

 

 

 

Most of us have been in this type of situation. Clan event or real event? It's difficult to choose, especially when the risks are so high on each end. Many people say RL>RS, but is is true 100 percent of the time? Would getting fired be worth winning the war? But then again, your clan might lose & leave you wishing you had gone to work.

 

 

 

Real life or RuneScape?

Mostly pick Real Life over RuneScape related activities.

 

If it was a very serious war and the appointment wasn't that important to me, I might consider cancelling it, but in 95% of the cases Real Life wins.

 

 

 

I don't think anyone would pick a war over a job. You get paid to work, not to call in sick to play a game. Setting priorities are important, and in most cases a game isn't one of my top priorities.

My decision to attend the event or not depends on the situation. In the example I used, I'd put someone else in charge & get to work.

Well if you were going to be fired, in that situation, I would go in instantly.

 

 

 

However, if I know I will have commitments in a war about a week before and there are plans, I will do my best to rearrange them so that I can help my clan while still going out on a different day.

In a real life emergency like the example given I would most definitely put real life first. I think in other less important issues I would also put my real life first since I value it a lot higher than my Runescape life. On the other hand, there is a line when a Runescape event would come first, but it is pretty low.

Majority of the time you notify people not to be disturbed, even at work. When it's something that pops up out of the blue though, I would put someone else in charge and go.

 

 

 

RS > RL is my moto when it comes to clans, as when I was leading a clan it was my responsibility to the members to be there. If I couldn't be there for them all the time, then to me it felt like I didn't deserve to be leading them.

 

 

 

It really comes down to how much responsibility you think you have to the members.

 

 

 

As well it depends whether your leading the clan, or just a member. =/

I'm sorry, but you'd have to be a complete moron to do anything in a computer game instead of... pretty much... anything in real life. I mean even in that situation if my mate invited me somewhere I'd leave instantly. I would personally respect my clan leader more if he/she actually has a life.

Under those circumstances you should obey your bosses orders 100% of the time. Losing a war on RS isn't the end of the world, but then skipping work could result in a) you getting fired B) bad reference from your ex-employees - imagine trying to get a new job in the future when your ex-boss tells your possible new boss that you refused to come into work when there was an emergency and they desperately needed you. I doubt any company would want to employ that type of person.

 

 

 

Even if something less serious comes up such as friends wanting to go and do something you shouldn't avoid it so that you can war. RS will always be there, but will your friends if you constantly turn them down because you want to play an online game?

It dependes on the seriousness of the situation. If you are the leader of a clan, you should have people ,co-leaders, who can take over for you if you need to. You have to remember RS is a game, real life isn't. A job is more important then a game.

This is the main reason I have chosen not to be in a clan - the commitment most of them demand! Any Runescape clan, group or society I'd join needs to understand that for me, pretty much everything in real life gets priority over Runescape. If something comes up in real life, I don't want to have to worry about letting my fellow clan members down, because I already know I won't.

What one also has to remember that it isn't just your life you'll be changing if you go to work - you'll dissapoint a large amount of people in your clan by possibly losing/bailing out, and large amounts of opposing clans, who now don't get a fight.

 

 

 

Tough one, but it varies from person to person. On starting RS, I made the point of RL > RS, every time.

Runescape is real life. What, when your playing runescape, your being lifted off the face of the earth into another life? No. I choose runescape over some real life things. Ive missed school assignments for it. Ive cut classes for it. Ive missed work for it. Ive pretended to be sick for it. Ive stayed up late to play it. And you know what? Im happy with my choices, because im enjoying my life 100%, and thus, my 'real life' is going great so far

I would always pick real life over RS. Truth be told, I don't even play RS much nowadays. If my job was at stake, and I was in the middle of a war, I'd hand it over to my second in command, and get my butt to work. Clan war = free pixels, respect, reputations. Job = Money, references for future jobs, more respect from people you actually know. If my pixels or my only source of income were being threatened, guess which I'd pick to save?

Hell, if it didn't I might actually be able to attend clan events more than once every two months.

I completely agree with that. Playing a game for the majority of one's day is that person's decision. I boil when I hear or see the words "Get a life." It is one of the few things in this world that anger me. "Get a life? WTF, I'm [bleep]ing living right now you damn [wagon]." It's like playing sports all the time, but no one would say to that person, "Get a life."

 

 

 

Online gaming comes with a bad connotation. I personally don't want to spend most of my day on the computer, I'd rather parkour. Having "a life" depends on the other person's opinion, which may be opposite from another's.

I overlook missed events for issues in real life provided they tell me. Emergencies I can understand and this week my clan has off (sorta) for those that get out of school the end of june. (for finals)

Definetly the emergency. Cause without money there will be nothing to power my computer. I mean, why would you choose rs over something which could make you lose playing rs (and a lot of other things you might like for that matter)? Calling in sick sometimes to enjoy yourself...You're not supposed to but hey, you need some fun every once in a while. But when your job is at stake there should be no question about it.

But, if I was leading a clan, ~75% of the time I would try my darnest to make sure I can attend those clan events, especially a war!

 

 

 

I'm not very 'social' in RL, so most of my friends are here, on RuneScape. And about 95% of my friends on Runescape, were from clans I have lead or have been in!

 

 

 

So I "know" most my friends on Runescape pretty good, and I feel I'm letting my friends down if I didn't attend the clan events.

 

 

 

I more than likely will be told I have no life, that I'm stupid for putting what few (and immature) "friends" in RL under my real friends on RS, and what-not, but that's who I am, and how I'm spending my time.

Those of you on lightning who know me know I haven't been on for a month, and now you know thats because I've been taking Driver's Ed. And I would never even think about skipping something like that for an "important" clan war.

 

 

 

Those of you who think that Runescape is real life, of course it literally is living. But it does not personally affect you other than emotionally or timewise. There is no way Runescape can "hurt" you unless you play it too much. Losing your job can greatly hurt you. You may, for one, not be able to pay the internet bills.

 

 

 

And even if you lose this important war, call to make it a best two out of three battle in regular clan wars for the first two battles, and make it bounty hunter for the tiebreaker if there is one. Or just get a clan co-leader or member you trust to lead for you. If you don't have one of these, that's just your fault for not being prepared for things that might pop up and make you leave *cough cough* failed connections *cough sneeze*.

 

 

 

These things are much better alternative than losing your job, which is a bigger risk in your life than losing a clan war.

I'm a clan leader, and I have to run an event today and at the same time I have some real life buisness to take care of. I obviously chose real life over runescape because real life is more important than a game I play for fun.
