Building My New Computer

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Im up for a new computer, and i dont want to be ripped of by companies so i found it would be cheaper to make by my self...

Just wondering if anyone could give me a hand:

Specs:

--Intel Q6600 G0 SLACR

--4GB DDR2 ram

--500GB hard disk

--Antec EarthWatts 500w efficient power supply

--20x DVD-RW

--GeForce 9800GTX 512MB

--Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R logic board

--Windows Vista Home Premium (64x)

for $1404.

My MAX budget was $1550

Anyway i was just wanting to ask a few questions:

1) What do u think of it?

2) Anything i missed out ?

3) I need a case... Im looking at the Poseidon 310 (Here)

3.1) Any cases you would suggest something sleek and nice, preferably no windows.

3.2) on This review, it is mentioned that the font panel blue LED lights do not turn off

is this true?

- so can i change it to turn off with system powerdown ?

is there away to dim the brightness of them ?

4) Do all the components fit in the case provided (by u or me)

5) any other relevant information

[hide=Suggestions (please comment)]go for the radeon 48xx series they beat the 8800gtx and cost less.

What about this ^^^^

What about one of the new P45 chipsets?

What Does that MEAN :S

Is it a good idea ?

Up the PSU to 700[/hide]

Many thanks in advance!

~Necro

P.S. The red/blue colours are just there to make it easier to distinguish each question

AUD

Nice, but you'll need a better PSU for that build.

Any Suggestions ? (please post price)

Go with the ATI 4870 it's way faster than the 9800gtx. It's even faster than the new Nvidia GTX 260 and it's cheaper.

How much Is it ?

It's $300 USD but now I realized you are probably looking at AUD so it's probably out of your price range.

The 4850 would be a good choice then. Thats $200 USD, no clue on the AUD price.

Cases are really a personal preference. Just choose one that looks good, and make sure that it is at least a mid sized tower.

Do all the components fit in the case provided (by u or me)

Yes, that case fits all your components. Any mid sized tower will.

go for the radeon 48xx series they beat the 8800gtx and cost less.

I'd go with previous suggestions in getting a HD48xx card instead. In Aus, price for a 4850 ranges from $220-250, but the 4870 is a little overpriced at the moment because of just being released and little availability of GDDR5 memory.

What about one of the new P45 chipsets?

Basically the main differences between P35 and P45 chipsets is the higher fsb support (for overclocking) and more bandwidth for crossfired cards. If you don't need either, just go with the one you have already. As well, P45 chipsets feature PCIe 2.0 slots, which means video cards can run faster on them. But most modern day ones don't even utilize the current PCIe slot speeds (1.1) fully, so it's more of a marketing gimmick for now.

Up the PSU to 700

No, you don't need to do that, the one you already chose is enough.

on This review, it is mentioned that the font panel blue LED lights do not turn off

I'm sorry, but where exactly does it say that? I can't seem to find that... In any case, if the computer is turned off, there is no electircity to power lights.

Personally I use http://www.staticice.com.au to find cheapest price on comp parts here.

Neutral

* Price is okay, but nothing more than that

* Cooling performance is okay using the black mesh window

* LEDs on the front of the case don't dim after system shut-down

* Dust and fingerprints or (obviously) very visible on black cases

Thanks for all your information! GREAT help :P :P :P

500W PSU is the minimum requirement for that particular graphics card with 600W as recommended. If your budget allows it I would consider going for a 750-800W PSU. Can't help you about prices unfortunately.

There's even a big picture that goes with the comment on the LEDs too. How did I miss that? :wall: Anyways, it looks like that case comes with a front panel, so you might be able to place it over it so you won't see the lights. But don't quote me on that.

Manufacturers like to overestimate the requirements for compents so they cover themselves if someone's computer blows. Power supplies aren't all about wattage. What's more important is the amount of amps that run along the psu's 12v rails, which supply power to specific components. The Eathwatt one was 34A, whereas a 9800gtx requires a minimum of 27A so it's in the all clear. Both 4850 and 70 cards have around the same requirement too.

Just a thought as well, is there any particular need for a quad core? If you're not doing any encoding or multi thread dependent tasks I would go for a dual core, since they are clocked higher and would be faster in games.
