Why not just make change the name of coins to gold pieces?

I have been thinking about this for a while.

In the inventory, runescape currency is shown as coins.

Yet, players often call it gp, to the extent that even jagex uses the term too in npc chats. Why not just change the name of coins to gold pieces?

Sometimes i find it odd that a npc can talk about coins when another is asking for gold pieces.

So, what do you think? Discuss.

If there is another thread on this, please lock.

Edit: Clarified a bit on the matter.

It wouldn't change the way anyone played Runescape, so I'm indifferent. Gp is just a shorter synonym that gets the same point across, much like GE = Grand Exchange.

they won't change it because:

1. the coding might be quite complicated.(might not be though)

2. jagex has been working hard with all the current updates(graphics, lumbridge diary and the job thing in lumbridge)

so i don't think at the moment changing the name of coins to gp or the other way is their top priority.

There's no real reason to change it.

To a new player gp means absolutely nothing, while coins actually means something.

The only reason the term gp exists is due to the very very very first examine for coins being "a pile of gold pieces" or something along those lines, this gave us definition of WHAT our coins were. But as long as theres only one type of coin theres no need to rename them and confuse people.

I mean if USD GBP or EUR only had 50c 50p and 50c coins there'd be no logical reason to call them cents and pennys there'd just be coins

To stop new players becoming confused...

Why nwould they be confused? It's obviously coins. Player do call it gp but that is short for gold pieces. If they changed coins to gp people would be begging them to changerunecraft to rc etc.

Uhm...question. Since when was GP an abbreviation of Coins?
Since the dawn of online gaming.

Too bad it's not an abbreviation of the word "coins." It's actually an abbreviation of the term "Gold Pieces," which is not close in lettering to the word "coins," at all.

I think it needs to be changed, yes.

But then again, what does my opinion matter?

It's pointless and makes the game feel harder to understand. Imagine changing all the skills and objects to what people call them.

Firemaking -> Fm

Runecrafting -> Rc

Two handed swords -> 2H

Hitpoints -> Hp

Attack -> Atk

Strength -> Str

Defence -> Def

Chinchompas -> Chins

Now, let's take the last example. On the hunting guide, you would see "Level 63 - Red chins"

Then imagine being a noob and trying to understand that

the coding would be incredibly simple, you'd just have to literally type in GP instead of coins (maybe Gold Piece since GP is the abbreviation)

but anyways...

I like it to stay as coins, since GP sounds stupid when you say it. :oops:

they MUST change it cuz in the player dictionary GP is listed as Gold Pieces but nowhere in the game can u find Gold Pieces, imagine this:

Noob: Wow 10000 coins im gonna buy something random with this!

Noob: Buying gold pieces!

Pwnr: stop spamming u noob

Noob: Seriously im buying gp

Million pwnrs report noob for spamming, noob is banned

as to why we need noobs, without them we would all be noobs

Just keep it. So long as players know that 'coins' and 'gp'/'gold pieces' mean the same thing, then everything's fine.

Gp's shorter to type, too.

500,000gp sounds more RS-like than 500,000 coins.

Just my 4 trillion cents.
