Why is farming so mis-judged?

I'm sure you all remember Farming when it came out, it was hated so much. Even in the poll, it wouldn't let you see the results being people hated it so much. Now today people have grown to like it, but you still hear people loathing it. When you say "I love farming!" in public, some people may think you're stupid and what not for loving a boring skill. But what I don't understand, is why it's so mis-judged! I mean, yes I'm an avid farming now, too. I grew to love it.

It's a skill that ACTUALLY gives me free time to do something else while waiting for your plants to grow, Like make money for more seeds, or just money-making for something else! Say for example you're herb farming. Takes what, 75 minutes? Thats 75 minutes to give you time to go and do other things. And To be honest, I'd like to get 40k experience in mining, or hunter in the hour that I wait for my herbs to grow. And even if you do mine, say Granite 500g to sell them, you can get over 200 of them an hour if you have a decent level, there 1.1k+ each. 200 times 1.1k is 220k! That's really not bad just for an hour.

Yes I know it takes alot of hours to make trees/fruit trees to grow, but I'd rather be making money for more seeds then CONSTANTLY clicking like other skills such as hunter or mining. Why do you think it gets so mis-judged? Not just because "It takes forever to get a level"

I'd like to hear this discussion,

Some people on the game are impatient and can't handle the fact farm takes alot more time if you dont have alot of money for it, but even still 200k experience a day costing roughly 2m probably isnt for them..

I enjoy the skill alot so I cant say much about hating it but I've made a good few mils from herb farming.

But its definately not as misjudged as before.

I think farming is mis-judged because people don't realize that you can use the time for something else and don't need to sit there watching the plants grow, farming is actually a pretty easy skill, just plant the plants and go off and do something else for a while.

its not as mis-judged as before but its still hated by a few.

I don't see why some people hate it :|

I dont really like farming. I dont like the idea of having to pay people to look after stuff for you and its really annoying to see that half your trees died even using super compost. pfft.

I do fruit and wood trees occasioanlly and herbs but thats about it. Farming is one of my lowest skills. It takes too long to level up

Farming is an awesome skill. You add ~60k/hour profit per hour to whatever you're doing, and it doesn't even require very high levels. At 32 you can start farming ranarrs.

The main reason why people don't like the skill, is starting it, I think. Until I got my farming to 30 doing sorceress' garden, it really was the most boring skill I ever trained. It gets fun once you reach the higher levels and start getting quite a lot of xp with only 5-10 minutes of work.

Most people who don't like it, like to get immediate payoff of whatever they're doing, like training strength so they can have a higher max hit.

Also, if you don't use help sites like tip.it, you probably have not as much knowledge of the game. That really helps while farming.

I dont mind not getting profit from a skill but what i dont like it planting a bunch of Yew trees and waiting hours for them to grow only to die and get no exp at all from it. I dont have the time to keep checking up on them for disease.

I've got a LOT of alching to do soon tho (50k alchs) so maybe I will use that opportunity to grow herbs and trees and be able to check up on their progress to ensure they dont die.

Farming is only misjudged by the many younger players.

Some patience is absolutely needed for farming. Simple fact is that most kids dont have patience and more mature teenagers/adults have. And seeing that this game is mostly played by (immature) kids, your question can be answered....

I was going to say almost the exact same thing. It is to complicated for younger players or just to intimidating to someone getting started.

I think it is rather relaxing...

Farming is what Runescape should be all about, non time consuming  The skills allows for players to simply plant their stuff and get on with their day. Sure you can speed farm, but it's still counted as a gradual skill.

You'll find most people who dislike farming are those who wish to either buy their skills straight out, stand there clicking in the bank / certain area all day ( fletching, woodcutting, cooking to name the easy ones ) or those who don't like the idea of actually moving around the world.

I love farming, and I only wish there were more skills like it so I don't have to spent most of my rs time clicking the same thing over and over again.

I really do hate farming, and it's because of a few problems with the skill. First, it can take hours to see the results. Sure, plants can take years to grow IRL, but you don't gain exp for growing them. I know this makes me mentally inferior to people who like farming, but I can live with that ;)

Second, the disease system. I hate it. I absolutely loathe it. There is no reason to punish a person for planting a herb seed then going out for a while instead of constantly worrying about it. If Jagex wanted to make farming realistic, they could have just raised the grow-times significantly, and that wouldn't have worked well either. Growing plants in real life isn't exactly the average 'scaper's idea of fun anyway.

Third, and perhaps the most minor - leprechauns should be able to sell farming equipment. I hate banking because I forgot to re-store my spade.

Those are my points, rip them to shreds.

I am 4k from 99 Farm and i will continue to gain exp in farm.

I dont understand how people say it is "boring", it isnt boring at all imo, it takes me 5 mins to do a herb patch round and i can gain ~5kxp and ~100k profit every 2 hours ( i prefer 2hours to 75 mins, Leaves more time to do stuff in the middle). During the time my crops are growing you have time to do anything u like that u find "fun".

I just love to farm <3: But trees can be a pain XD

5k exp in 2 hours (2.5k/h)!!!! Thats precicely why people dont like farming. At that rate it would take me 3 years and 143 days doing 4 hours a day of only farming and nothing else.

Yes, that would be true, although that experience rate is specifically from Herbs, and I have yet to hear of the player to reach 99 Farming through running Herbs alone. =p

I've bought 99 Farming (currently 90), and I can easily gain 100k+ experience per day--which is actually pretty good for one of the top three skills. I usually plant Papayas once, Yews twice, and Herbs three times every day. ::'

I must say that I find it to be a beautifully-structured skill. =)

I know exactly what you mean, I've never hated Farming, I even liked it the week when it came out while everyone else hated it. Although my Farming level is quite low #-o

I think some are just not intelligent enough to see that you don't have to just stand there next to your patch and watch it...

[insert birds flying in a circle here]

Yes, that sig was annoying.

You spend around 6 minutes doing that herb run. 50k xp/hour and 800k profit per hour isn't bad, that's like runecrafting double nats.

Yes, it means you can't camp at abyssal demons all day, but if you're cooking for example, leaving your fire for 6 minutes to make 80k isn't bad at all.

I can understand you don't like farming, and at least you've tried it, but the only argument against farming is 'not liking it' or 'it is boring', really.

I fell in love with Farming since it came out, it's such a great skill. I don't get it why people hate it, the skill has so much potential, earn money while doing something else, cheaper Herblore training, ...

It's just a great skill.

Some people dream of success, while others make it happen.

I wouldn't consider the issue to be a lack of intelligence on the part of those players who dislike Farming (I know Mercifull to be a very intelligent poster, for example)--rather, I would say that Farming is a unique skill in RS and that there are players who prefer to gain experience as they work instead of having to come back several hours later to "collect" their experience. :P

Even I just usually stick with Trees. It's easy, just pay the farmer to watch it, check each one once, and gain at least 400 experience (depending on the tree) just for checking on it (which requires nothing but a quick teleport or a run). I'll do allotments, but not nearly as much as I would like. It can be a bit hard sometimes at a lower level.
