I just liked 4 posts in a row. I like stuff too much, I should be more pessimistic.

Also, I really want a dog (like Ammo <3: ) and a kitty. Going to the animal shelter to play with some once in a while is nice, and going home to play with my parent's 240lb English Mastiff is tons of fun, but I want one for myself.

If you pick the right day to ask you could probably have both Ammo and my cat.

Some days they are both so annoying that all I can do is think about owning a nice pair of fur-lined boots and mittens :P

So once again I'm thinking of holding off my higher education and getting some IT training/certificate and doing work with computers...for more money and a job fall-back. Not sure where I should start though, any TIF'ers know where I can start? Living in California, America btw.

I bought one of those stainless water bottles yesterday, to cut down on my plastics use. (I've been buying two 1-litre bottles of water on my way into work each morning) Getting into the car, I dropped it in the driveway... The bottom corner dented in, and the formerly flat bottom now sticks out and keeps the bottle from sitting neatly.

This is why I can't have nice things. :-|

I wear one of these and have four others strapped to the inside of my jacket, and I just kinda cycle through them during the day, making sure to refill them during my lunch break. I dont want to sound melodramatic, but the Flasktie™ might be the best thing that has ever happened to me. I hope it will be the same for you.

Thanks I needed a way to smuggle more alocohol into the workplace.

The only thing I would advise is that generally the longer you wait to pursue the post secondary education, the less likely you are to follow through, at least for a significant length of time. I've observed that the general tendency is to become less comfortable with the idea of student debt, and the reality that the longer you wait to incur it the later in life you will be dealing with it.

Langzor, don't say things like that. I can't tell if your joking or not (I can certainly picture you with a flask tie).

Today was beautiful, so I took the day off from doing things and just rode my bike and threw a frisbee in the park. Found out the nearest branch of the public library is right next to my bank, so it's near enough I can go there on weekends. I think I'm going to make that a weekly trip, just so I get out of the dorm sometime during the week.

vote lanzor for "most likely on Tif to wear a flask tie"

Only if I can also vote langzor as "Most likely to drink Kool-Aid out of a flask tie."

I don't know if that's actually true, but I'm voting for it anyway.

Big problem with IT jobs. EVERYONE is doing it in the event of a fallback, (so even those who wanted it as a main career are screwed anyway). THE BIGGEST issue, is countries in general are outsourcing and having people come to each country on visa to do IT jobs as in India, the IT industry is massive with workers. Australia wise, the problem is they come on visas to do the jobs requiring University degrees and high-end experience. HOWEVER instead they decide to work in a lower-grade IT job because it's easier for them to get in reguardless. This ends up choking entry-level workers having a chance to get in.

A good example is at my mates work, a guy was hired just because he had a diploma in IT engineering....in a ENTRY level job that was hardware repairs. He's never done hardware repairs but was hired over me simply for the Uni degree. (I guess you could call it a slight rant)

basically, don't rely on IT as a fallback, because EVERYONE is doing it.

The best backup career is sales. If you're good at sales there are almost limitless job opportunities (and a lot of variety too), and it's a job that will give back exactly what you put into it. If you get good at selling you can make a great living, but if you don't you'll barely make enough to live on.

Also, being able to sell things is a useful skill everywhere from dating to job interviews to getting favors.

That may be true for Australia, but it doesn't look the case here.

I don't think I've ever seen a foreigner working with computers, a lot of Asians and White folk though...natively born I mean. To me it seems like a decent job market considering, yes, lots of people know about computers but there's five more having no idea and needing repairs. Every big business needs someone to look after the network and the national infrastructure doesn't maintain itself. It seems like jobs unlikely to be outsourced.

But I'll keep your concerns in mind. I might be totally wrong and see lots of under-employed people taking my jobs, idk. Just figured IT would be a better backup to a history professor than having no backup at all (I guess pizza delievery counts? :P ).

@T-Tan: without a doubt it is, but it has a lot to do with manipulation. I'm not good at that nor do I feel good pushing things down on people. Sales is one of the few jobs I've made a decision I will never do.

Yesterday was an adrenaline fest. Went snowboarding. 4th time on snowboard in my life. And I went to the park and started jumping and raced down a skier. Without a helmet, goggles or a hat and on rented snowboard. Damn, I've gotta buy me one this summer...

So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends.

Muggi reminds us of the joys of polygamy.

Saq is totally oblivious to how much chicks dig him.

I strike out every other week.

Kalphite wages a war against the friend zone.

Randox pretty much stays rational.

Etc, etc

I think the reality is you need two or three "back-ups" unless you're virtually guaranteed a job post-graduate. IT, for what my opinion's worth, is a good back-up because the world is becoming increasingly dependent on carrying out basic administrative tasks using a computer; hence, even in a recession, there's no shortage of jobs in admin which require IT literacy (even if there's currently a lot of competition for them, just like every employment sector out there).

Retail is also a good back-up. Even if you feel like you currently lack confidence in facing the public, you quickly learn and you'll gain confidence as you go along, confidence you can use to break your way into a better job, if it's not a long-term prospect.

My personal "back-up" after dropping out of medical school was care work, and it ended up going from a back-up into something I think I'd be quite happy doing for the rest of my working life. Keep an open mind.

A good salesman doesn't "force things" on his clients, though. For example:

A decent mattress salesman with a smooth tongue might try to get every penny out of his customers by pushing super expensive mattresses on them even if they're not the most comfortable for that particular person. However they're not going to get much repeat business or recommendations when their customers realize they've been shafted.

A really good mattress salesman will find the mattress that fits you the best, which will make selling it easier (also you tend not to need to drop price as much if people love the product). Although he makes less money on the sale it's far less likely that the customer will walk, and he's also a lot more likely to get recommended and gain repeat business.

Really, the only form of deception that goes on is playing games with the price level, but hey it's also the one of the only situations in which a savvy customer can haggle.

Screwing people over is only a good idea for you if you plan on skipping town every other week. It's much better for you to do right by them and let them be grateful. You're still manipulating them, sure, but it shouldn't leave that sour of a taste in your mouth if you're doing right by them anyways.
