Alg
They do have a tiny sliver of a point behind all of the fearmongering, though. There's a bit of a difference between watching someone act out violence and being the one to act out violence. Even then, I'm not sure how much violence and 'corruption' has actually been caused by that kind of thing. By the time you can play the game, you know better. You may have a tiny sliver of a point, but there's a bit of a difference between pushing buttons to cause a game character to act out violence and being the one to act out violence.Which is part of the point I was trying to make, with the rest being about how the mediums are different. It's like comparing a book (imagination) to a movie. I painted some stuff and put it on tumblr
stevepole
The problem with the video game violence debate is that the people who are still having it, aren't reading any of the research.
Randox
I can see a point to it for certain age groups, since the ability to distinguish between reality and fantasy is not an ability people are born with, it develops later in life. That could be a legitimate problem in some cases I think. On the other hand, I know that past that point, there is also research which suggest that perhaps it acts as a pressure relief, that because humans are inherently lazy (not wasting energy is a crucial step in your species continued existence), reality escapes can satisfy the urges of people who would otherwise have to deal with their desires by breaking the law. It does seem to roll both ways though. An example in the other direction is that it's been shown that, for males, playing a racing game and then getting in a real car makes you an objectively worse driver, who is now sort of driving like they are still in a racing game. It's not a clear cut issue. GTA 5 was enough to make me go back and check exactly what the M rating meant (I was apparently thinking Teen). I'm actually still surprised that a game that glorifies weed (and it totally does) managed to score only an M.

Furah
Why pick a mac for exactly the same hardware you'd get for half the price with the competition if you're going to use Linux on it? Because, here at least, the cost difference isn't much for similar hardware. You also get a nicer build quality and support, in the retail market at least. The first thing I did in GTA5 today was kill a hooker. It was like christening a ship for it's maiden voyage. I teared up a little. There was a huge debate on the radio yesterday about that (specifically in GTA4) and how that kind of thing is corrupting the youth of today, with only minor mention of how it's rated M and should only be sold to adults an absolutely no mention of violence in movies (like Saw) or TV (like Criminal Minds). I saw it as just one more example of how people raised in the 60's are horribly out of touch with today's society. The real problem is that the only person not responsible for the violent actions your kid does seems to be your kid. Oh, and you, because there is no way you could ever be bad at parenting. If it's not your kid, it's entirely their fault. Both of which are not always correct, when it's been found in at least one case a brain tumour caused a man to become a paedophile. Who knows what else has been committed by someone influenced by tumours and other growths in the brain. Steam | PM me for BBM PIN Nine naked men is a technological achievement. Quote of 2013. constrictor
Personally have never been able to really enjoy GTA games, they (like other similar games like Farcry, Skyrim, etc.) are just too large for me to enjoy by myself. If they were to become MMO's I'd love them to be honest. muziclab
Nekyia
I don't have much of an opinion on the computer debate. With my luck everything seems to break anyways :P The best being when I accidentally put a cat through my alienware. I think that laptop was fine up until that point though  Here's a picture of it. stevepole
I don't really know if I'd say GTA5 glorifies weed, but maybe you're farther along then I am, but the the only real drug moment is when Michael is have some crazy hallucination where you have to kill aliens. Ginger_Warrior
Isn't the whole thing meant to be a satire of the American criminal underworld? If it glorifies weed in that context, it would be sardonic, surely. Only a moron would suggest GTA:V is like "Smoke weed e'eryday". | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |

Star.
Debating whether to get an Xbox 360 or Xbox One. I have kept myself away from Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Dead Space, Battlefield and many other series so that I could play them on my own system but the Xbox One won't be backwards compatible. It would be great if it becomes more compatible like the 360 did with the first Xbox... Or I could take my Gamecube to uni. That and there's a Dreamcast lying around. EDIT: Also dudes, my laptop has Windows 8. I am the epitome of cool. ☢ CAUTION ☢ CAUTION ☢ CAUTION ☢ CAUTION ☢
Ginger_Warrior
You might only get a year, or a year and half out of a new Xbox 360. There's still some decent games coming up though, so it's still potentially worth it. I got my 360 around two years ago now and for the classic series I just got them pre-owned. I was never a Final Fantasy fan but, I was hooked onto FF13. Got Fable 2 and 3. The Halo games. They'd be considerably cheaper now too, FF13-2 would only cost £8 these days compared to a £39.99 price tag on release, minimum. Edit: I turned down a free Windows 8 upgrade from my retailer. Estonian dude
Get a PS3. I am quite sure it is better supported for at least one-two more years. I have it and have never had problems with it. In the case of computers, my brothers' HP overheats every few hours aswell. On my own Toshiba, as I had it cleaned the build quality was not the best and like 3 grams of thermal paste had flown over. Also, Toshiba has some weird drivers that had to be uninstalled. So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends. RPG is constantly dealing with psycho exes.Muggi reminds us of the joys of polygamy.Saq is totally oblivious to how much chicks dig him.I strike out every other week.Kalphite wages a war against the friend zone.Randox pretty much stays rational.Etc, etc
Nekyia
The best being when I accidentally put a cat through my alienware.I...what? My cat was in front of the open laptop and hadn't noticed I was behind him. So I thought it'd be a good idea to scare him. When I did he shot right forward into the screen. He didn't bust it apart quite like it is in the picture, that's more from using it after he damaged it initially and it got worse. But he still did a number on it and I somewhat regretted scaring him  For the past day I've been trying to convince myself I have the flu, but my stomach pains are seeming more and more similar to when I had diverticulitis a few years back. My boss told me not to work in case I have the flu so no one else gets sick, so I'm going to go check myself in to the emergency room. I've never wanted the flu so badly. That diverticulitis was one of the most painful things I've ever experienced and I was out of commission for almost a month. I really don't want to do it again. :(

Otherwise in my opinion, weed has been casually referenced similar to other mediums. Nah, I don't even own the game. I was thinking of two examples. The first is that you can smoke weed while watching TV, which is at the very least extremely casual and consequence free so far as I can see. It also makes you say funny things. The other is a 'Bad Trip' mission where you get a mini gun and shoot aliens. While not depicted as fun for the character, I would conjecture that barring prior experience with a bad trip, that looks pretty fun. That said, assuming the game is being played by people who meet the criteria for an M game, I would think that the players have probably already made their choice on where they stand with smoking weed, and GTA 5 isn't going to change their mind. That's the point of the rating in many respects, to keep certain material away from more impressionable minds. Still, perhaps glorifying is not the right way to describe it, in the same sense that the consequences of drinking in GTA 4 are sort of hilarious, if not motion sickness inducing.
