The idea of guns genuinely makes me nervous. I really do feel sketchy about them. I live in Canada now and it is kind of in the back of my mind when I hear of things but I don't let it stop me having a good time. (I'm really enjoying Canada by the way, I've gotten used to buying alcohol fortnightly) and I've had some great nights out with some cool people. Lectures have begun and the content is super interesting. I've spoken to some Canadians and they think I'm not actually British and that I'm just talking weird which is quite funny. Next year I'll buy some sports gear. Valu mart was alright, 10% student discount Tuesdays was good and I got a good amount of food for about $65.

You likely won't see any guns unless you go out of your way to look for them. Carry of any kind is essentially illegal for anyone non law-enforcement.

I don't think 8-10 years is enough time..and well South Africa probably has other issues, like poverty (?). Not to mention, how secure are their borders if people want to just smuggle them in or buy them from other neighboring countries? I mean I don't blame them in terms of priorities but I'm not sure how accurate of a comparison it is.

Well the reason i chose to compare USA to SA is because they both have similar pasts regarding segregation/apartheid. So there's bound to be a lot of racially fueled murders. And because i believe there are some parts of the US that are very comparable to parts in SA in regards to economical and educational status. With that said, i think my biases will always lean more towards guns than it would against guns. I've been in multiple situations where owning a fire arm was the likely reason things ended in our favor. Had it not been for that, i would have been orphaned at the age of 3, again at the age of 5, and again at the age of 8. And this is coming from someone who lived in one of the "better" parts of the suburb. Gun control isn't going to take the (illegal) gun out of a criminal's hand, it's only going to take the (legal) defense mechanism from the innocent. And as i said previously, even if you do manage to get a large portion of illegal weapons off the streets at first, all you're essentially doing is creating an even bigger black market thus funding criminals and as a result you're also more than likely encouraging corruption. It's only a matter of time before someone at customs is bribed to look the other way as a few crates of weapons are carried through.

Additionally, much like South Africa, USA is a gun-cultured nation. Guns have been around as long as people can remember. It's unwise to try and completely take something away that has been a big part of your history.

Lastly, regarding South Africa's crime rate in general. It's probably a very well known fact that it's the country with the highest crime rate in the world. Crime has been getting worse year after year, with or without guns and gun control. A lot of this has to do with the economic state, but when it comes down to brass taxes it doesn't really matter. The point is that crime will happen no matter what. A criminal will commit crime with or without a gun. A killer will kill with or without a gun. But the average person might not be able to protect and defend themselves without a gun, and those are the people you really punish with gun control.

I still think that with less guns in general, less gun crimes will happen.

If a criminal doesn't have a gun, the victims won't need guns and law enforcement won't need guns.

Unless you manage to completely remove guns from a society (only really possible in specific isolated circumstances), making guns harder to get will ensure only criminals have them.

Even so, that doesn't mean less crime will happen. Someone who's been murdered doesn't care whether it was with a gun or a knife, they're dead either way.

If a criminal doesn't have a gun, the victims won't need guns and law enforcement won't need guns.

Guns are still effective self defense tools faced with any kind of criminal with any kind of weapon.

People who believe stricter gun control will solve (or at least reduce) the problem are probably in for a rude awakening. If you take a country like South Africa as an example, they implemented stricter gun regulations like 8 or 10 years ago. Since then, the number of gun related deaths has been fluctuating in the same region (give or take a few hundred deaths). There was no rapid decline, and there never will be. By bringing in stricter gun laws all you're doing is growing the black market for weapons and theoretically funding criminals. If someone wants to use a gun, they're going to use a gun. No gun policy is going to change this. I don't know why people always jump on the "we need better gun control" bandwagon. Sure, you can't exactly compare a country like South Africa to America, but right now it's the best example i could think of off the top of my head.

Even in America what gun control has been instituted has had questionable results.

For example, Chicago has the strictest gun control of any city in the states, but one of the highest murder rates. Compare that to Houston, which has some of the most lax gun control, but one of the lowest murder rates.

In several notable cases violent crime has dropped sharply when concealed carry legislation was passed (in florida, I believe it was Miami or Orlando).

There is room for some tweaking of American gun control legislation. But as you say, people expecting transformative results are in for a rude awakening.

And in contrast, states like Vermont with some of the laxest gun laws in America have a rate of gun crime comparable to Canada

For what it's worth Vermont has no major cities and no major smuggling rings a la Florida and California

So i just read that a 14 year old kid in Texas got arrested for taking his home made clock to school. I should probably add that the kid's name is Ahmed Mohamed so it was obviously not at all a racial matter. Well done Texas.

I live in mississippi and despite all the supposedly racist flag and every other stereotype we seem to coexist with all just fine. We get alot of flak for all of it. Most around here love our guns ( i'm not even a gun owner) . When in comes to muslims in particular I have never seem ANY hatred towards them ( in my particular are), but obviously that not to say it hasn't happened. We all just kind of get along for the most part.

Its sad that I think most of America's worst qualities reside solely in our political leaders and representatives.

That Texas thing is ridiculous. Kid said it was a clock. Teacher called it in. Kid says its a clock. Gets interrogated. He says its a clock. The break it open. Guess what? It's a god damn clock. Even if his name was Joe Smith the amount of stupidity is awe inspiring.

Also, I don't like guns but I'm not foolish enough to try to take them from those who like them. I do however wish they needed to be inspected or checked in every so often or something so we could keep better tabs on them. So I'd go with more regulation, but not out right disarmament.

It seems like people who are nervous about the idea of guns usually don't have much actual experience with them.

I apologize if I've missed my mark, but my wife and I would love to give you a chance at some basic firearms training and first-hand shooting experience.

If that's something you might be interested in, let me know. We're about a 3.5-hour drive from London, ON, and our usual range is about a half-hour on the other side of us... but there's a place near Lapeer, MI which is about two hours from either of us.

Hey, you're right I'm not offended at all by what you've said. The fact of the matter is I'm bloody frightened of guns and I have been throughout my entire life.

I don't trust myself I think I'd get the shakes and do something really dumb but maybe in a few months if I get some balls.

I'm going to the Niagara falls this Sunday like a proper tourist but my 2 weeks in Canada have been 10/10 so far.

I need to buy winter gear soon. One of my friends has been written up by the police for public drinking disorder.

British people are so trashy (Including myself I've been a mess a couple of nights already)

Poetry slam on Friday night. Time for bed now, 8.30 lecture

I've also been challenging myself to speak to someone I haven't spoken to each day. I don't know why I'm doing it but I guess it's paid off cause I have Canadian contacts now |^_^| homecoming is next week and my first midterm soon. Never done a midterm before so should be interesting.

I'm happy to live in a country with strict gun control laws, though I see the problem in getting rid of the guns already in circulation. Dedicated criminals or perpetrators of a shooting that has long been planned will still be able to get guns, no doubt. But I think reducing the widespread availability will reduce the number of deaths. Be it deaths by accident, like a kid finding a loaded gun or arguments between spouses, friends whatever that are escalating, be it suicides or the teenager going on a school shooting with his parent's weapons. Guns aren't responsible for these deaths, but they make it easier.

Such a good day. 40 people all swarming to talk to me just because I sound different. I love it. I've been struggling to approach people even though I want to... I can just never bring myself to talk to people I don't know. Kind of counter productive as I'm on a bloody year abroad.... But we did a simple ice breaker and suddenly had all these people interested in me, where I'm from, what I study, how I'm finding Canada... It was surreal but amazing. I really don't think this happens in the UK, I think people would be interested in foreign people but with much less enthusiasm. I'm so pleased with the genuine interest in anything I have to say though, that's new.......

I went to Vancouver a few days ago which was a lot of fun. Having coins for $1 and $2 denominations was interesting. It was also funny being able to go in bars (where we virtually never got carded, nor did we in liquor stores. guess that's a lot more lax there in canada than in the US).

however, i started feeling really shitty on the last day of the trip after having blamed my general fatigue the prior few days on lack of sleep, lots of walking, etc. after a couple days of barely being able to leave bed, i made it to the doctor where i took a blood test which came up positive for Mono. so that explains that. now i'm just very tired and have a bad sore throat. time to wait this out over the course of a few weeks :/

I just had the worst night in a long while.

What makes it specially painful is that I've been 100% completely sober the last 30 hours at least, so I'll remember it for all times to come.

I am at a war with an organization.

Been two months and a half since I've last drawn, stuff happened and I haven't had the motivation to do more. I started a new drawing this morning, looking like it's gonna turn out pretty.

Takes a while to do and it's very tedious, but it's also pretty rewarding.

I got up at 7:30... started a bit before 8am, it's now nearly 3pm and I just finished :P
