I just happened to listen to a podcast last night featuring a conversation with Trevor Noah, where he gives a great account of his experience of an outsider's look at our culture that's basically evolved to this strict attitude of I'm right, you're wrong. It was a good listen, https://soundcloud.com/channel33/ep-10-the-andy-greenwald-show-w-trevor-noah-1

Tbh I've had money worries whilst out here.

I was charged by Greyhound for a ticket that didn't go through online and that set me back about $100 and when I asked for it back, they asked me to contact my bank which I did and the bank said they'd get back to me but it's been over a week and I've heard nothing back. It's not nice to lose $100 obviously, but it just seems that a lot of things here don't take debit cards. I only have two debit cards (my Canadian one and my British one that works internationally) - I don't have any credit cards

I've paid for a lot of things with my British card but there's a conversion fee as there's a currency difference with every transaction so it adds up. My Canadian card hasn't got much on it so my mum has stepped in and basically let me use her card for anything I need so I've been looking at things to do in Toronto for the break so while I don't want to go crazy, I already have lol.

Bought a smaller suitcase suitable for my travels, two greyhound tickets, earphones, paid my phone bill and also a hotel room for my return to Toronto from New York.

The reviews for the hotel look awful but that's a problem for another day  :D  :D I can see myself with an okay amount of money for my travels, but I'll need to be conservative and very strict with myself when I hit the USA.

I think I might get a ticket for the Aquarium, CN tower obviously and we may go ice skating and do other typical tourist things.

The only day things are actually closed is Christmas so we should be able to get a lot done. I'm actually quite excited, I've never had Christmas away from all my family before.

I feel like a bit of a Yuppie (A yuppie is british slang for a young, urban professional)

I also have managed to get a job in Canada within my Visa requirements obviously but I feel pretty damn efficient right now  :shades:  :shades:  :shades:  :shades:

My plans for the next few weeks are to answer probably 220 multiple choice questions spread out over three exams and then get my hair done and hit the road!

It is exactly a month until I level up in age as well.

I guess it's gone quite quickly so far and I honestly look forward to getting hugs again from family and friends, I could do with one!

On a side note I'm really feeling mixed emotions about how quickly it's gone though because I've loved my housemates, I've had a fantastic few months with them and we've formed a great unit. Two of them leave in just over a week and it's been a bit of a ride. It's just one of those things that you know you're super close in person but you know that you will likely lose contact. Either way I think I live in the best flat in my building (Obviously I WOULD say that) but I'll look back at this fondly. Next semester we have a German friend and a Chinese friend moving in with us so it should still be pretty decent. Just going to huddle together I guess as a lot of our mates will be going home. I look forward to visiting my British friends when we're all back home up in the north of England. I wonder how I will handle a night out in Manchester or Sheffield  I've always been a proud southerner. The furthest north I've gone is Bradford

Got a 3-hour final on Friday with 100 questions. Yawn.

Will be good to say bye bye to another module, though.

Temperatures slowly dropping but I'm hacking it at the moment without requiring my winter coat.

Reports say it'll be a slightly warmer winter.

I didn't leave the house today except for smoking breaks but other than that I have new earphones and it literally feels like I haven't been listening to the same songs.

What did you get? I've had the worst luck with earphones lately, can barely get a pair to last a month.

yo same, i'm so sick of this shit. i spend like 30-40 bucks on a pair of earphones and they break every month or two. not sure what gives, i avoid sitting on them and stuff like that. my walks to campus and bus rides have been sadly quiet recently.

I've been having the same problem where I'd continuously buy $130 iems and have to send them back every two months when they broke. Then I found these. $10 earbuds that sound almost as good as my last $130 pair, and if anything happens it's only $10 to replace. Definitely would recommend / 10

Just got back from New York today for an interview with Palantir. 4 interviews and they all went awesome, then I walked outside the office and there was a food truck giving away free cookies. p solid day. Reeeeeeeally hoping this works out because Palantir would be such an incredible company to work for...

Last night was pretty wild too. Got to NYC at around 8:00 pm. When I went to the hotel Palantir put me up at I realized it was like a $600/night hotel. I went to dinner shortly after at some random bar and sat down at the only open seat and started talking to the guy next to me. He turned out to be the CEO of a $1 billion + hedge fund lol. I ended up having a 2.5 hour conversation with him over wine and the best steak au poivre I've ever had. It was super interesting getting to hear his story and career advice, even if he was trying to convince me to switch careers into finance haha.

Well, the person I was communicating with on ebay to have more information about a motherboard just stopped talking to me, guess they sold it before I could get it. Pretty much a good thing since I went too fast and should wait until feb to be able to afford it without going under. I just moved and that's pretty expensive, and I will have my first electricity and internet bills that will include 2 months since they work on pro-rata rates...

Only a matter of time before this gets split off into a new topic that promptly dies.

It's not my fault no one consistently pays attention to any other thread :P Also, I think people get tired of brick walls arguing with each other.

As for the arguments, things would probably be more productive/interesting if all sides could try approaching a subject with the mindset of "other cultures have different customs and values, and this is an opportunity to learn how another culture works and why, and what problems they see with their own system" for a change. Also, wow, I'm one of those people I hated so much when I was a child

Don't worry, just having a bit of a flower power moment.

I'm sure the comedic world has covered the topic ad nauseum, suffice it to say that today I have renewed my hatred of Christmas tree lights. Don't get me wrong, I very much appreciate the result, but trying to work with a string of lights you didn't buy yesterday is just an exercise in frustration.

Had a DC/AC fundamentals test today. 99% sure I knocked it out of the park. Had to build a series parallel combination circuit with 4 reistors and a 12 volt power supply. Really love the major I'm doing this time around.

One of my players goes out of his way to insert his character into the backstory of one of the major NPCs, to the point of retconning his own character's background to make him even more artificially important to what he thinks the plot is about.

He then proceeds to explode at some of the other players for wanting to follow up on the plot hooks they've been presented with, arguing that his character could easily kill the character who's most invested in the current plot if they don't go his way. He gives up when he finds out that the others are (justifiably) not okay with this, instead of... you know, explaining anything. Shortly after he starts ranting privately to me about how them caring about the plot is ruining the game for him, and they're stupid for caring about the story over the gameplay... The story that he *knows* I'm super invested in, after having invested a fair portion of my free time in the last few months on it. Meanwhile, the gameplay was basically thrown together at the last minute.

It's like... does he really think I would agree with him? I love that they're going out and doing these crazy unexpected things, and he's basically spent the whole time belittling them for it.

As of today I have officially been accepted into a program for after I graduate next year. Just have to make sure I get my license upgraded in the spring there and I'm good to go.

With concession made that each person has their own idea of what is important to this type of game, my gut reaction is to say your friend is doing it wrong :P

The group I play with is all about the story, to the point that we rotate as DM so that we can all participate in each other's stories, and also craft our own (we set our game in space, so there is lots of room for us to set up our own stories without them clashing with each other).

Woke up around 8:00 am. Went to take out my chihuahua... and heard running water. There shouldn't have been any running water. I checked throughout the house, nope, no running water. Checked the outside water faucets, nope, no running water.

Then I checked the carport utility closet. Water pumping out of the top of the water heater. Bullshit. There were some construction dudes down the street and one of them helped turn off the water to the house (valve was stuck, didn't have the strength or tools).

Called the local water company before then, though. Let slip the account holder (my mom) was deceased, so it's more important the account switches from my mom to me. They'll require a deposit, too, I bet, stupid corporate spastics, despite the bill being paid on time on my part (since she's been deceased over a year now). Oh, and they'll try and have someone turn off the water in the mean time. Lucky for construction workers!

Landlord is going to be out here shortly, I hope. Probably wasted upwards of ~500 gallons overnight. Ugh.
