Edit: I've decided to start working on a simple tile based game. So far this is what I've got

Its smooth on screen but the GIF is kinda choppy

Next thing I plan on adding is UI menus.

Should be pretty easy since I'm just painting over the tile layer like I am with the game character you see moving around.

Not sure what I want yet so I'm going to copy runescape where all their menus are just a sprite painted over the game screen that are divided into different parts to allow for customization.

Haha. Reminds me of a game based on around the lives of 'pixels'. Unsurprisingly, it looks similar!

Ugh...spent the entire day stuck out in the sun on a site with no canopy. And of course it all went completely sideways so the job took for freaking ever. It's 8:30pm and I only got home 20 minutes ago. I tell ya, sometimes this job really makes me work for a long weekend. Oh well, tomorrow's Canada Day so no work for me! :D

THE place for all free players to connect, hang out and talk about how awesome it is to be F2P.

So, Kaida is the real version of every fictional science-badass? That explains a lot, actually...

For college would you guys recommend a laptop or desktop PC in your experience? I'll probably be travelling a decent amount between school and home for holidays and such as I'm only going ~3hr drive away which is why I'm thinking the laptop but at the same time the price point has me thinking desktop as I can get much more power for a lot less.

Laptop definitely. If you have the money do both, but definitely need a laptop.

Remember a few years back when I worked for a mafia front? My GM just got charged in a federal court case after a multi million dollar drug ring was seized. Of course he only got multiple possession counts so they barely scratched the surface in all honesty but it was amusing to see it pop up on local news

All students at my school were required to have access to a Windows laptop, so keep that in mind.

I definitely recommend getting a mediocre laptop and dual booting Ubuntu and Windows, especially if you're a CS student. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you need a shit ton of processing power and RAM to get through college. I have shit running on a Pi that's a million times more CPU intensive than anything you'll do in school. It's absolutely worth it to sacrifice power for portability. Just don't download a ton of adware and you won't have any problems.

If you absolutely need a powerful computer (e.g. games), I would recommend getting something like a Lenovo Ideapad (about $160 and 2lbs, but still powerful enough for taking notes and running whatever shitty Windows software your school partnered with) and putting some money into a decent desktop. If your budget is $800, then that gives you $640 to spend on a desktop, which is more than enough to get you a good starter PC, and you can upgrade it as you go.

If you dual-boot, use OpenBSD or FreeBSD instead of Ubuntu so you can learn to hate how Linux-centric the non-Windows world is like me!

I'd like to echo Ring_World and Hedgehog. If you need power, get a small, cheap laptop and a decent desktop. You'll be able to build a better desktop and get a cheap laptop for a much better price point than an equally powerful laptop.

If you get a laptop make sure you're actually using it properly in class and not dicking around with video games and the internet.

Laptop for me is more of a bonus for when holidays/vacation comes up and I can be more mobile. I don't think I would use it in class as I have to have an iPad as my program uses CompTracker.

CompTracker looks funny.

On their site:

"Through the use of mobile devices and a SECURE website, CompTracker enables students, instructors, and administrators to REPLACE the old PAPER ways of tracking students.

CompTracker is an EASIER, GREENER way to know what’s happening with your students while they’re on practicums!"

The whole site is like that; strange usage of emphasis to highlight buzzwords.

E.g., CompTracker being 'greener'. I doubt that. Any digital device produces more pollution than all the paper you'd use in a decade. They are built from certain materials that are toxic to the environment (during collection/processing/manufacturing/etc), are of ethically dubious origins (like most products we use, sadly), and/or hard to recycle. Paper is easy to recycle and comes from a practically renewable source.

And are their servers hosted in a datacenter that uses clean or renewable energy sources? Do the CDNs they use, if any, do so as well?

...Why did I even bother this analysis of how 'green' CompTracker is?

The most ironic part of that is the program currently only works on iPad forcing people who would never have one otherwise to purchase one. Along with the fact that it only works with the newest iOS which may be a smaller issue than I think, but forces people to buy newer if it runs out.

I've never bought an apple product and I think I'd rather go full Amish than support their brand

One good thing about lawsuit culture in the US is no school would dare force you to do that.

I personally refuse to ever buy an apple product so I'd probably raise some hell.

Ehh, its pretty standard practice for my program at all the schools I've looked at so I don't think raising a stink would help my case much. In addition my father uses all apple devices and had an iPad air he purchased when his other iPad was stolen that he never sold after he got the original back and so I didn't even have to pay for it.

Most Apple stuff is well made and at the start there wasn't anything else that could touch it. I also had an iPod Touch and an iPad Mini, but I'd never get an iPhone.

In other news, [bleep]ing France took out Iceland... Shame. Shame. Shame.

So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends.

RPG is constantly dealing with psycho exes.

Muggi reminds us of the joys of polygamy.

Saq is totally oblivious to how much chicks dig him.

I strike out every other week.

Kalphite wages a war against the friend zone.

Randox pretty much stays rational.

Etc, etc

I find it odd a little bit as a North American that doesn't really follow sports to be reading that last part. If I didn't know that the world cup or European cup whatever it is was on I would be thinking that Iceland for invaded or nuked by France or something and not just eliminated in a tournament.

Let alone how calm Saq was in the post while saying it.
