I used a welding mask. Only got to about 50% coverage here, but still, a crescent sun is a neat thing to see. Tried to grab a picture but the mask wasn't quite dark enough for my camera to make out the shape. I believe that to have an impressive show in the full eclipse region you are supposed to take the eclipse glasses off for the ~2 minutes of complete coverage so that you can see the corona.

It did get noticeably darker, like it was overcast, but the wrong colour (I guess you get used to the normal colour change from clouds).

we had ~95% in seattle. The crescent shadows on everything were dope, the water got a bit darker and some of my coworkers had glasses so I could see the crescent sun but I still probably wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't know to expect it. I didn't realize that the especially crazy parts only happened at complete totality, otherwise I would have made more of an effort to make it out to Oregon or something. Ah well

We had about 65% where I was. It got a bit darker, but it was a weird darkness. We didn't have glasses, but we did a basic camera obscura (with a collander, lol) so we could see the shape. Pretty neat.

Watched a video earlier today where a guy was talking about how, apparently, the Turkish and Qatari troops have set up road blocks all over the country, how Qatari nationals are rioting and rebelling against the government, and how the military has had to resort to tossing tear gas into the crowds of people to calm them down. This is what's being broadcast by news organisations in the UAE and Saudi. Oh, and Saudi had an advert on television showing their military shooting down a Qatar Airways passenger plane for entering their airspace. This is all because of a recent "dispute" between Qatar and some of the surrounding Arab nations, and now they're trying their utmost best to make Qatar look as bad as possible. Now i'm not going to sit here and pretend Qatar's innocent, but get [bleep]ing real. When i country like Saudi starts pointing fingers, things become laughable.

There's a rumor floating around that Qatar played a big roll in the riots in few years back in Libya, and that Qatar is considering a more democratic system. This would explain the sudden hatred between the Arab nations because they know as soon as Qatar becomes more democratic, it's only a matter of time before they're forced to do the same. This would make a lot of sense considering the recent attention Qatar has been getting because of the FIFA World Cup, and their issues with human rights. Makes even more sense when i consider some of the recent changes made to things like VISAs, citizenship, etc.

Still just find it laughable when a country like Saudi claims innocence regarding funding organizations and points fingers to everyone else instead.

Sure is the pot calling the kettle black there. I've never been to Qatar, and all the vets I know that we're stationed there hated it...but I like that they may be considering westernizing. They already have enormous business arangments with the US, so my uneducated opinion is that everyone would long term benefit from a more democratic Qatar.

So my friend was apparently prescribed an antidepressant along with an opioid painkiller (don't know which)...should I be concerned? Aren't those not meant to be taken together?

A quick Google says that it all depends on what kind if antidepressant your friend was prescribed. If the antidepressant was a benzodiazepine, it's bad because both the opioid and the benzo work by depressing the CNS and have greater risk of OD if taken together.

Now, if it's an SSRI that your friend is prescribed, its still sketchy, but the right combination shouldn't have any negative effects. However, the wrong combination can slow the bodies removal of some opioids leading to increase risk of overdose. A different wrong combination increases serotonin levels which can cause/lead to serotonin toxicity.

TL;DR: Its safe so long as the doctor was careful with his selections.

Yeah thanks, I checked with her again and she says she won't be taking the opioids, seems to be able to get by with Advil okay. That doesn't give me much confidence in the doctor, though.

It's generally the pharmacy that is supposed to catch prescription errors. I mean, in a perfect world the Doctor won't prescribe medications that don't play nicely, but drug interactions are really the domain of Pharmacists. It's also generally a good idea to fill all your prescriptions in the same place to make sure the pharmacist is aware of all the drugs you take if you have more than one doctor.

Since it was the same doctor prescribing both, is the antidepressent for pain? Just wondering because when I had shingles I was prescribed a tricyclic antidepressant. As an antidepressant they're not used anymore because the clinical and LD50 dosses are too close to each other, but that class of drug has found a second life in the treatment of nerve pain when used at lower doses. Sadly (or luckily?), the nerve pain dose is far too low to have any mental effects; at least in my experience (a mood boost wouldn't have been entirely unwelcome given what a roaring good time shingles is, but it was not to be).

At the end of the day, if you can get away with not taking the opioids that's probably best. Nice to have if you need them, but being stuck on them long term often doesn't lead to the end of a rainbow (to be fair, plenty of drugs don't lead to sunshine; not just opioids).

Lucky it's my last day of work and on Tuesday for a week to LA to warm up my frozen bones.

My recently developed nightmares and the fact that I wake up once a week with my heart going over 200 bpm beg to differ

First time I ever had Benadryl was intravenously in prep for another drug (that has a reasonably high risk of causing allergic reactions). Next thing I knew I was waking up and really confused about why it was so dark. Didn't fall asleep so much as I passed out for several hours, and it took almost a minute to sort out what had happened (I had 'fallen asleep' and it was now 2am, hence the darkness).

Reminds me of something from my childhood. I remember about 3 times when I fell asleep and woke up with no memory of falling asleep, having any dreams, or even of really waking up (I woke up totally alert). To my perspective, it seemed that I had simply laid down in bed, blinked my eyes, and it was suddenly morning. Sadly it's not happened even once in the last decade or so. Best sleep I ever had that was.

A couple months ago I got hit with a fun new, super painful, rare skin condition and I was seeing all kinds of specialists for it.  One specialist prescribed me one thing, and then a couple weeks later another specialist prescribed me something else - he knew what the other specialist had prescribed and said to just take both until I saw the other specialist again and he could decide if I should continue with his prescription.

But when I went to the pharmacy the pharmacist was getting me my prescription and he brought out all this paperwork and said I needed to fill out all these disclosure forms saying that he had let me know of the lethal combination of the different prescriptions.  He said that the 2nd prescription could increase the potency of the first so that it becomes lethal.  But he still let me take both of them, just as long as I signed the paperwork.

So yea, that was a fun trip to the pharmacy!

105F here. Enjoy the heat because personally I can't wait to graduate and move out of LA to somewhere that isn't a desert (And one that goes out of its way to pretend it's not)

Fun thing is, I am in LA right now since yesterday. No way to sleep at all in this heat.

Also, that smog. Never thought it would be that bad. And the city is freaking huge.
