All of these anecdotes are entirely subjective to region. Where I live is a cheap area for NJ, and to be more specific I pay $1400/mo rent for 1/3rd of a home property. I know another tenant pays $900 for her floor and I think the attachment pays something in the $1200 area. Because Google is a thing I know the current owner bought the home property (all 3 chunks) for $150k. While there was obviously a lot of money put into repair and there will be more to come in maintenance the math pretty easily shows that renting costs the renter more than buying the property - WITH the condition that they can afford the original down payment, taxes, and maintenance expenses

If you can swing it, and can deal with the possible stress, some people rent out part of their home to help cover the cost. Ideally, you want the tennant to be at least paying say, the interest on your mortgage, turning it into a free loan for you.

Having already done the living in a house with other people thing, I'd sooner light my pants on fire than rent out part of a house I actually own myself, because apparently everyone treats anything they don't own like shit. But hey, if you're less disillusioned about renting than I am, it's a possibility. Or maybe the idea of sharing your property with someone who never picked up a sponge during the first 20 years of their life and thinks cleaning out the dryer lint screen is for fancy people excites you in ways you can't explain. Who am I to judge.

I added equipment...

Errin the Heathen killed the god Yendor and enchanted an amulet with his soul. It's probably a story that's never going to make it into the game (out of scope) but I need good debugging equipment damn it!

Actions are extracted from the GameDB. The item name is also fetched from the GameDB (including a language tag for Future Proofing localization). Left clicking uses the first action (Equip in this case), while right-clicking exposes all the actions:

Anybody have advice for apartment searching?

Using Kijiji right now but not having much luck with finding apartments, or at least decently priced ones.

If you have a neighborhood in mind, try joining their local resident Facebook page. I see a lot of real estate rentals and open houses posted on those

Seems like you wouldn't be able to get an acceptable down payment in an area with 1600 a month rent.

Plus, mortgage payments are usually at least as much as rent, arent they?

Rent is throwing money out the window. With a mortgage payment, you are paying into owning a physical asset at the end of it. Of course there are additional costs such as property tax to consider (and maybe tax benefits, not sure), but all else being equal, you'd rather own your home after 20 years rather than renting once again for year 21, wouldn't you?

lol it must be so nice living in a low COL area. I'm trying to move into a one bedroom here and and most of my options here would be around $1700-2000 a month. average home price is like $700k lmfao. I wish I didn't have to spend so much renting but homes are just so ridiculously unfeasible

Realizing I haven't really checked in here in a while but this last month has been such a whirlwind.  I've had a bunch of  really fun times- a really fun trip back home to see a bunch of my friends, followed by Sasquatch music festival which was absolutely incredible (I've had few moments as utterly joyous as getting to see Slowdive play a perfect set at the peak of an acid trip as the sun set and the full moon came out) , followed by my birthday weekend which culminated in a party that had like 50 people show up to my apartment and got shut down by the cops at 2 am. On the other hand, I didn't get promoted at my job over some complete bullshit and I've decided its time to start job hunting again. My lease is almost up too and I'm over having roommates so I'm dealing with trying to find a new apartment too, as well as planning a couple trips that are coming up this summer. So definitely a lot going on but a lot of its exciting at least and I've been feeling a lot more comfortable with my relationships out here now so I'm pretty positive about things overall!!

Buying a house post market crash of 2008 was a steal. A guy I work with bought his house around then and it's since increased over $200k in value without any additions or renovations (it was built in 2004)

I like the idea of a community house like what you got, Nyo. But you really gotta like the people you share a kitchen with. Shared common space can get brutal

I don't think i've ever met a Dutch person who wasn't way too arrogant, and just thought his shit doesn't stink. I don't get it, are they actually raised to think they are a superior nation, and they should go out of their way to let everyone understand that they think they're superior? So i'm sitting at the US embassy yesterday. What a [bleep]ing nightmare. Getting into that place is harder than escaping Guantanamo, i'm sure of it. Anyway, so i'm waiting for my appointment to number to be called, and ahead of me was a Dutch guy and his wife/partner/whatever. I think they were applying for some sort of long term VISA, because they were talking about buying a house, putting kids in schools, etc. (this guy clearly thought the entire building wanted to know what he was saying too, because he was talking as loud as he possibly could without shouting). So he gets asked a few questions, answers them, and with every answer he felt compelled to give some sort of snide remark. One of the best ones being "yeah my kids are gonna go to a Dutch school, i don't want them getting a shitty American education". There were a few more that just left me thinking: Dude, you're applying for a VISA to this country. Maybe it's not in your best interest to do absolutely nothing but shit talk the place? Yeah? I don't know. His VISA got denied though, so [bleep] that guy. People like him deserve it.

In related news, my VISA got approved. ~2 weeks from now i'm headed to Texas for 6-8 months, and hopefully longer. I'm excited.

Arlington. Don't really know too much of the place, to be honest. But even if it were to be the anus of Texas, i can't wait to get out of here for a few months.

Last night a friend of my dad came over to the house. Apparently he has a travel bad and a warrant for his arrest out. He's the CFO of a big construction company here. As per the law it is illegal to give your clients a cheque unless you have the money in the bank to foot the bill. But it is very common practice to do it here, then just tell your client not to bank the it till a certain date. So a couple of days ago one of his clients came round his office to pick up the cheque like he does every month, he hand it over and tells him not to bank it till a certain date. The guy looks him straight in the eyes and says "first i'm gonna go to the bank, then i'm going to capitol police to report you". So now he has a warrant for his arrest. He's basically been trapped in his house, because legally it's requires so much paperwork and permissions to arrest someone in his house. So chances are they'll never even try. Now he has to wait for his boss (who's one of the most powerful people in the country) to come back from holiday and basically clear this mess up. Funniest thing of all, this just happens to be the "holy month of Ramadan" and the assclown decides to pull something like this after they have been doing the same business for years now. Just shows you... these people are [bleep]ing scum. They might have money, they might have power, but they are [bleep]ing dogshit.

Well I'm up for review concerning my disability (from Social Security).

This is earlier than expected. It will take them 1-2 months to make a decision. If they decide I'm not disabled, then my benefits terminate two months after. This means I have (worst-case) 3-4 months to find a job that pays $20+ an hour. LOL.

Time to accelerate my CompTIA certification studying.

Tbh, Veiva, you seem far more skilled at CS than anyone I graduated with. It seems like you should have no troubles getting a good paying job, at least as long as you're looking at a place that values code quality and good architecture. So, maybe skip out on jobs at like insurance corporations, but tech places should value your skills.
