Question... I'm pretty sure at the rate I'm going my resume after school will either have to be like 8 pt font or 1.5 pages event if I just include relevant info, lol. Currently it's just at 1 page if I exclude my Staples job and only include school/extracurriculars/work relevant to programming, plus only skim over my experience with APIs/frameworks/tools/languages.

Because when I graduate I'll have an Associate's and Bachelor's, plus extracurriculars from school like tutoring / website dev, at least one internship + two relevant jobs (freelance work & new job) assuming I literally do nothing else new (no new internships, no relevant extracurriculars, no new job(s)) while in school. But I'm hoping to intern at Epic when I start on my Bachelor's; starting the game dev club at FTCC and/or making one at FSU; and some other stuff... And who knows what else.

This doesn't include any personal work like BMASHINA, DISCWORLD, or ARDEN which are complete and usable projects /today/ (behavior tree AI framework for C++ and Lua, game relation DB and GOAP, and real-time OpenGL tracing/debugging/analysis library) or things like ItsyRealm (when I finish it in a couple years). I suppose I'd just leave them on my portfolio (except ItsyRealm, because that'll be too big to just leave on a portfolio, and I may monetize it).

...

so my question is: what do. Because I'm going to run into this problem after I graduate FTCC and try and get internships, let alone when I graduate FSU and try and get jobs.

also should I understate my experience with programming languages and such? Because it'll be odd to be a college grad with over 8 years C, C++, and C# experience. That may look like I'm lying or overstating my experience I think (even if it's true).

I wouldn't stick too hard to the 1 page resume rule. Mine is 1.5 pages, for instance. As long as what you're putting is relevant and well organized, you should be good. Also, you may have like 10 bullet points for a job at staples, for example, but you probably don't need to give all the detail on the resume - just focus on the specific qualities you learned at that job that wouldn't be represented elsewhere

Your resume should target what you're applying to, tailored to the needs of that job. Don't understate your strengths. Don't limit yourself in formatting.

Honestly I have no clue where the 1 page resume rule came from. When we receive your application, there's probably 10 pages stapled to it anyway. By all means, filter out the fluff, but don't be afraid to submit a 2 or 3 page resume. In fact you probably should be able to fill a couple pages if you're looking for a mid level position

Guess I am an idiot then. I can tell you that not many PhDs would be decorated enough to have anything more than 2 pages at best unless you literally write "I have excellent abilities in mark-up languages and can produce elegantly designed manuscripts and presentations" instead of "Proficiency in Markdown/LaTeX". This is including a presentations and publications section and other responibilities such as invited reviews and membership to societies.

But if you seriously cannot consolidate your skills and expertise into a 1-2 pages even after a PhD you are seriously doing something wrong in my honest opinion. Anything more than that would be for things such as publications and presentations which you should only really select a few of them. If you are a decorated PhD holder, with 8-10 years of Post-Doctoral Research under your belt, then a long CV IS needed since you also have to detail down sponsors and who has funded your research alongside titles of such things.

The one-page rule probably came from HR-managers that couldn't be bothered doing their jobs.

I guess in the age-of-convenience and to make baby boomer's jobs easier they would have preferred shorter CVs so they had had to do less work.

There's no way I have enough for more than 2 pages even if I did everything I wanted between now and graduation. I was thinking I'd hit like 1.5 pages, maybe 1.75, if I don't cut anything.

Essentially ideally it would be:

contact info / portfolio / etc (5 lines)
languages, APIs, frameworks, tools with more than 1 year experience (4 lines)
work experience (10-12 lines)
- ItsyRealm
- internship at Epic or whatever
- work at IM
- freelance work
education (2-4 lines)
- BS in CS
- AS in computer programming
extracurriculars (4-6 lines)
- game dev club
- tutoring
- contract work / etc
completed projects of note (optional, 2-4 lines)
- BMASHINA
- DISCWORLD
- ARDEN
- open source contribs

Looks like a solid beginning for a CV. How would freelance work differ from contractual work - aren't they the same thing?

With a major rival fan site closing (http://forums.zybez.net/topic/1783583-exit-post-the-end/page-8?do=findComment&comment=17221283) it makes me think how long Tip.it will be around. End of an era it seems.

In my personal life, I’m preparing moving to another city for the first time in my life. Even though I’ve lived on my own/with an s/o for the past 5 years, moving away from family and everyone I know stresses me out.

Messing around with and organizing a funeral and all the paperworks and inheritance and stuff is a pain in the butt. Specially if you are abroad.

Oh well, I'll be on a boat tomorrow and back at homeland on Thursday for a Saturday funeral.

Turns out that once the paperwork is complete I own a house and a car...

You know, my best friend tried really hard to get me and him to sign up to be DJs for zybez radio back in the day. I think we were still in middle school at the time, god.

I don't know if I'd still enjoy internet radio these days, but I had a lot of fun with that back in the day.

not too surprising....always saw Zybez as a bigger and more successful site than tip.it, at least as far as forums and clans are concerned. I've long since resigned myself to TIF going down one day and never coming back up.
