Most Scandinavian languages are Germanic based, only Finnish and Sami aren't.

I actually studied Mandarin for a semester in uni, that was interesting. A melodic language, where the meaning changes by the tonality of the phrase. We don't have it as pronounced, but a wee bit similar. For example, jäääär, aiaauk are words, which you can try to pronounce.

So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends.

RPG is constantly dealing with psycho exes.

Muggi reminds us of the joys of polygamy.

Saq is totally oblivious to how much chicks dig him.

I strike out every other week.

Kalphite wages a war against the friend zone.

Randox pretty much stays rational.

Etc, etc

August 13th I told this company I had a job offer that required a decision by the end of that week (and that I accepted and just started Tuesday). Today they wrote back, said sorry for the delay, is letting me know in another two weeks okay?

Anyone know anything about PC builds? Trying to make something kind of budget here.

Do you already have a GPU? (I'm assuming so but just checking since Ryzen doesn't have an IGP). And I'd /try/ going for a 1 TB SSD unless you're going to use a spare HDD. Of course, if you're not doing any gaming then it's more than plenty.

Personally I use 256 GB on my Windows 10 install which I don't game on and it's plenty for all my development tools [unreal, Unity, Visual Studio, etc] / software [Microsoft Office, Blender, etc] / programming libraries [20+ GB] / music [50+ CDs of FLAC-encoded music plus MP3 encoded copies lol] / other crap. But some of the games on Steam I've bought are over 50 GB which would... be taxing.

Oh right. Yeah, I didn't put it on the list at the time, but my friend is giving me his nvidia gtx970. I do some gaming, but I'm not one of those people who keeps more than like 5 games on my computer at a time. I have external storage for stuff like movies though, and slapping down another $100 for memory I won't use in the near future just doesn't seem worthwhile to me.

I don't have $300 to spend on RAM. Well, I do, but I like to eat from time to time.

16 GB master race! But my GPU is 4 generations old and my GPU is an nVidia 1050 (not Ti).

I so wanna upgrade to a Ryzen 8 or 16 core / nVidia 1080 / 32 or 64 GB RAM / 1 TB SSD x2 (for FreeBSD & Windows) / 144 hz 4k or dual monitor but I can't justify it at the moment. I want a 3 month emergency fund more than anything right now...

(But I could compile Unreal Engine in 10 minutes on that thing...)

I have somewhat of a "moral" dilemma. There's this girl who lives in the same building as i do. Actually, she lives right above me. We've been talking a bit over the past week or so. She's been flirting a bit here and there, and i'd be lying if i said i wasn't flirting back. She's pretty, cute, funny, smart, etc. Pretty much all the qualities you'd look for in a girl. Problem is... she's 8 years younger than i am. She's 20, and i'm turning 28 in 2 months. I feel kind of weird about it. I feel like she's "too young for me". I spoke to a friend about it, and he said i was overthinking it. I don't know...

Anyway, Texas has been great so far. Went to a Football game few weeks ago. AT&T Stadium is amazing. By far the most spectacular stadium i have ever seen. Went to a Dodgers game few days after that. Now that was fun. Has always been a big dream of mine to see the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers. It was such a surreal feeling, sitting there watching them play. Never in my life would i have thought that i'd actually get the chance to watch them. Training is going good so far too. Past few days have been a bit difficult due to the weather, but it's good actually being happy again. I mean, i always felt like i was happy in the Middle East, but there's just something about being in the US that really just makes me feel like i'm somewhere i belong.

Jesus. Anyone thinking of doing a PhD I implore you to never do one - it is the most draining thing you can do to yourself and it's not worth it. Both my girlfriend and I have gone mad.

I am well and truly fed up. I am haemorrhaging into my savings which were intended for a deposit and my partner has literally £0 to her name. We have to move back to our respective homes to finish writing our theses away from the university because we cannot afford to eat and to top it all off the [bleep]ing landlords are making us pay tooth and nail to simply exit out of the contract, which we had fulfilled - we simply had no choice around where we live to rent as students. I am beyond reproach with academia, especially with the political climate surrounding science-based jobs. Brexit has [bleep]ed mine and my partner job prospects in the UK up thoroughly.

On the plus side I am going to Australia in 2 months to see my Nan.

I keep having stress dreams about gming for some friends, which we were planning for about a month. We actually played last night, which I assumed would make the dreams stop, but I had to get up at 7 good morning because I couldn't stand going back to sleep and having the same stupid "you didn't prepare enough for the next session oh no!" dream.

I didn't get nightmares for a long time, no matter how stressed I got. Ugh, college ruined me so badly...

My skin is finally getting soft
I'll scrub until the damn thing comes off

PhD experience differs a lot between subjects and countries and whatnot. Down here, you generally live pretty well on the grants. And doctorate scholarships. And doing it in IT or genetics or some engineering field pays a lot.

Work, work, work all the time.

I barely got paid 14,000 EUR a year to do my PhD in the UK. That is the flat rate all-across the UK, regardless of subject. You might get a few Ks more if you are lucky.

she's an adult, you're an adult, I see no moral dilemma of any kind.

Maybe she will think you're too old for her - but you can let *her* decide that, you don't need to disqualify yourself preemptively

Tomorrow I get to interview someone...this should be fun. Let's see if he can figure out anything about Benford's law.
