I spent £130 ($165) on a PAL version of Frogger Beyond for the gamecube.

I have never played frogger and don't plan on playing it anytime soon.

I'm sick. I haven't been sick in over a year.

I'm miserable...

This year has been off to a great start. Really depressed on New Years Eve/New Years, psychotic episode, and now sick a couple days later.

Or from 6th of January for Russian Christmas.

Man, this Hungarian trip has been awesome. Haven't really met any locals, but spent heaps of time with my best mate. Tried lots of stuff, let out a LOT of steam.

Gonna hope that when I get back it's gonna be New Year, new me.

currently writing a 7-minute speech about Ocarina of Time for my toastmasters meeting next week. essentially trying to explain to a group of older professionals who have likely never played video games why it's my favorite game of all time, as well as why it's widely-regarded as the greatest game of all time. my goal is for them to walk away with an understanding of how some people can become so attached to video games-- something which they likely perceive as a waste of time.

the hardest part is condensing it all down to 7 minutes, since there's so much to talk about.

Depends on the audience. That's something you need to be open to understanding in order to be persuaded. But toastmasters tend to be more open minded people, from my experience

yes they're very open-minded fortunately. about a year ago, I gave a speech on why my favorite childhood tv show, Dragon Ball Z, was so popular and influential and they loved it.

Laptop chargers definitely have issues. Even just letting it sit here and unplugging it from the wall end, the connection tends to become loose. Luckily, there's often a $20 solution of just buying one off the bay of e so it's not too much of a big deal if they start to break.

Sucks more so after the third one. Hopefully this one works for longer.

Ofc I visited the baths. What else would you do there?

Visited both Szécheny and Kiralyi baths. Szécheny is the big flagship spa with sth like 18 pools and amenities for thousands at the same time, it was pretty cool, though a bit overcrowded on January 1st. Seems like everyone came in to relieve the hangovers in the thermal baths.

Kiralyi was a lot smaller, more intimate affair with 4 pools, a lot more rundown vibe, yet the staff were more attentive and nicer and the list of available services was nuts. Also, the fact that the main pools are there from mid 16th century from the Turks was also pretty cool. The octagonal main pool with a dome above it, and sight of sky from the holes in the dome... Not a place to spend a whole day in, however it was really lovely for the 2,5h we were there on a Saturday, soothing our hangovers from the day before...

I changed my brake pads on Friday, but didn't really get around to driving the car until yesterday. The rotors seemed fine at first, but the brakes were pulsating. I had to go back out and get new rotors and re-do the brake pads as well, what a pain.

“I had a feeling we weren’t coming back from this fight when it began.”

“Do you have any regrets?”

“I don’t. It seems surprising, I know, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This is how it was meant to be.”

“Huh, you never really notice how lovely the day is until you realize you’ll never see it again.”

“Mmmhmm.”

Both of our cars are now [bleep]ed. My Subaru is still in pieces, although finally the sensor has arrived from Japan. Worst time ever for post ordering car parts -_-

Volvo has the front suspension [bleep]ed. Yay.

My car had a massive exhaust leak and could only get it in on Friday when I had to go back to school. Thankfully, kinda, one of my friends broke themselves and needed someone to drive their car back for them. Now I have it for the week and just have to drive them to class which isn't a bad deal.

turns out you were right  for the first time, I didn't win the "best speaker" award after my speech... which was a bummer since I literally spent 20-30 hours writing and rehearsing my speech. before you speak, the toastmaster gives a brief introduction for you. unfortunately, this week our toastmaster was completely unprepared and forgot to print out the introduction I wrote for him, so he just winged it. in my introduction, I had acknowledged that most people in the audience have no interest in video games, and so this speech was meant for them in an attempt to help them understand why some people can become so invested in video games and how they aren't necessarily a waste of time or just mindless entertainment.

the biggest criticism about my speech was how I didn't consider my audience. I think if the toastmaster had been prepared and read the introduction I wrote, my speech would've been received better. but maybe I just did a poor job of writing it in a relatable/digestible manner for the non-gamer. maybe it was too avant-garde since nobody's ever played music in the background during their speeches in the past  either way, in the future, I'm not going to outsource critical aspects of my speech to the toastmaster for the sake of keeping my speech within the 7 minute time limit. or, if I do, I'll be sure to print out the introduction myself so if they're irresponsible I can pick up the slack.

My speech:

Speaker: Muggiwhplar

Project Speech #9: Persuade with Power

Speech Length: 5-7 minutes

Title: The Greatest Video Game of All Time

Toastmaster’s Introduction:

Our next speaker is Muggiwhplar. Muggiwhplar is going to talk about the greatest video game of all time, which is coincidentally his favorite video game of all time! Many of us have never played video games, don’t care about video games, and might even feel that video games are a waste of time. Muggiwhplar’s going to try and persuade us into understanding why this particular video game was so special and not just a waste of time. Please welcome Muggiwhplar.

----------------------------------------------

Speech:

If you Google “greatest video game of all time,” the first result is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a game which was released on the Nintendo 64 in November 1998 when I was 8 years old. But this was more than just a mere video game, fellow Toastmasters. This was… an experience!

[Muggiwhplar starts playing this song on his phone for the audience in the background while he continues speaking]

In 1998, 3D video games were still in their infancy. Before that, almost every game was still 2-dimensional: either from a birds-eye point of view like Pac-Man or from a side-scrolling point of view like Super Mario Bros.

Controlling a character in 3D felt oddly realistic and immersive. When I was a child, I loved watching Star Wars and pretending I was Luke Skywalker. But playing this game took that fantasy to a whole new level—because in this game, you actually were in control of the main character, and in a 3D environment with detailed, realistic graphics. Technology had reached the point where you could see these animated characters on your screen— each with their own personalities, facial expressions, and emotions— and you could actually empathize with these characters when they interacted with you because they felt so real and human-like.

This game felt cinematic in ways which we’d never experienced before. Prior to this game, games didn’t really have much of a storyline or plot. Pong and Tetris never had a storyline; they were just fun little games you’d play for mindless entertainment to relax and blow off steam. But Ocarina of Time was full of these “cut-scenes” where you could just sit back, set down the controller, and watch the story unfold like a movie.

Speaking of movies, the plot was very similar to Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings. It follows this literary formula called “The Hero’s Journey,” where the plot centers on a very ordinary character who suddenly receives a call to adventure. The character must venture deep into the unknown, face certain danger, and then return home triumphantly, forever changed by their experience.

But the difference between this game and those movies was that this game was very long; as a kid, it took weeks, if not months to make it through to the very end of this game. You’d play the game for about an hour or two, then save your game and pick up where you left off the next time you played. Because this game took so long, it really got you invested in the storyline and the characters, similar to how you might become invested the fictional characters of a TV series that you’ve watched for years.

[Muggiwhplar changes the song]

The character you play as is a 10-year-old boy named “Link.” Your mission is to rescue Princess Zelda from the evil King Ganondorf. I was 8 years old when I played this game, and playing as this 10-year-old boy just felt so real. Every place you explored felt so warm and magical because you’re exploring the world through the eyes of a blissfully naïve 10-year-old boy.

The characters in the game treat you similar to how I was treated when I was kid. Some characters are warm and friendly, saying things like, “Oh wow you’re such a cute little kid! What can I help you with?” While other characters are grouchy, saying things like, “What are you doing here? Beat it, kid! Adults are talking! You don’t belong here! Get out!

The grouchy adults like that, both in the game and in real life, sometimes made you wish that you were an adult too just you could fit in and be taken seriously. In the eyes of a child, adults seem to have all the freedom in the world. They can stay up as late as they want, they can watch R-rated movies, and they can drive cars. You see all the benefits and privileges that these adults get to enjoy, but you don’t quite understand the responsibilities that adults have which go hand-in-hand with those freedoms.

[Muggiwhplar changes the song]

About halfway through the game, you finally challenge Ganandorf because he’s attacking Princess Zelda and you have to protect her. But you’re just a 10-year-old kid, and he’s a grown man, and you’re not big enough to stand up to him. He beats you and you’re forced to run away. You run away and hide in this ancient temple, called the Temple of Time.

[Muggiwhplar changes the song]

Inside the Temple of Time, a sealed door opens up for you, revealing a sword in the stone. You pull the sword from the stone, and suddenly you lose consciousness. When you wake up, you realize that you’ve been asleep for seven years. You take a look at yourself and you realize: you’re no longer a child; you’re a fully-grown adult now!

[Muggiwhplar changes the song to dark ambience (8:14)]

But when you step outside the temple, you realize that Ganondorf has taken over while you were asleep for seven years. The sky is black and the air is riddled with ash. All the trees are dead. All the water has dried up. Areas once full of friendly characters are now full of evil monsters that try to kill you. The world is a scary place now. You just want to go back to being a kid again—

[While Muggiwhplar is speaking, his phone suddenly stops playing the dark ambience and changes. Muggiwhplar pauses with shock and embarrassment and awkwardly walks back to his phone and cuts the music]

…As I was saying, you just want to go back to being a kid again when things felt happier and simpler. But you can’t turn back time. You begin to realize that being an adult isn’t as great as it once seemed; you feel the pressure of having this overwhelming sense of responsibility placed on your shoulders. The game gets much harder from this point forward.

[Muggiwhplar changes the song]

And that’s what made this game so much fun! You push through the darkness against overwhelming odds just to save these people! The more people you save, the stronger you become! You get more health, more items, better equipment, giving you this deep sense of accomplishment and growth and fulfillment and progress until you’re finally strong enough to take down Ganondorf once and for all!

This isn’t just a video game, ladies and gentlemen! This is a work of art! When I was a kid, it was satisfying to watch Luke Skywalker overthrow the Empire, but that was nothing compared to the satisfaction I felt from finally defeating Ganondorf since I was the one who defeated him after struggling through this game for months!

This game proved that video games can offer more than just mindless entertainment! They can offer a rich, captivating storyline, beautiful music, and lovable characters! And that’s why Ocarina of Time has withstood the test of time as the greatest game of all time! And if you think it sounds like a waste of time

[Muggiwhplar cuts the music]

…Then you can get out!

So somehow I'm still sick, even if I'm feeling a little bit better.

I started growing a beard though, it looks pretty good. Haven't gotten anything but compliments so far. And it's not even been a week, lol.

I got on the President's List again this semester @ FTCC and one of my instructors wants to nominate me for a scholarship opportunity so that's cool!

While I enjoy the music references, I can see how it could have gone over the heads of old folks who can't tell the difference between Link and Zelda haha

What was the winning speech about?
