Things are moving so slow for me right now. Few weeks ago a storm hit the airport/school, we ended up losing a lot of the planes because of it. Planes' tie-downs broke and got tosses around. A lot of them took a lot of damage. More specifically, the majority of the planes i use for training got damaged except for 1 and there's a lot of other students who use the same model for their training too. So right now scheduling is really tough. On top of that the guy that was meant to do one of my final progress check flights (before i can move on to the next stage) has not shown up for the flight twice, which means i lost another 2 weeks because of that.

I considered moving to Arizona and continuing my training there, but apparently as per FAA regulation they will only be able to use 50% of my current training hours towards my license, which means ill have to do a lot of the training again and ultimately ill probably lose more time (and a lot more money) that way. So i figure it's best just to stay here and stick it out. Kind sucks. It's been extremely frustrating the past 2 months in terms of actually making any sort of progress.

Went to watch the Cubs vs. Rangers game the other day. What a game it was. So action packed. Saw a Grand Slam live for the first time. It was amazing. Im so happy it's baseball season again.

Noxx is alive and not in jail! Good to hear from you.

That scheduling definitely blows but it sounds like you're better off waiting it out at your current station than moving out of state

I did that Hedgehog (except the shadowban-risking bullshit). I posted to a more appropriate subreddit (/r/gamdev doesn't allow self-promotional posts like trailers) and at the right time (literally on the dot best time for posts in the last year or whatever).

Of people I know I think RpgGamer is the only person whose watched the trailer and it's been in this thread for a couple days and on the #OT Discord, a few forums, and Reddit. Because he's the only one who commented on it.

This is my frame of reference:

No one ever looks at my portfolio when I apply for jobs. No one is interested in my game despite my trying. This means even if I finish my game, or at least the demo, and put it on my portfolio it doesn't matter because potential employers don't even look at my portfolio. It's all a waste of time.

I just don't exist. I am an amazing programmer (if there's such as thing as a 10x programmer [imo there is] I'm a 10x programmer*) and games developer but no one who matters knows.

My superpower is being ignored. There was once a neighbor a few houses down who asked, over 10 years after I'd been living in the same house, how recently I had moved in.

*: I'd like to pre-emptively nip that in the bud and also brag: I've been working part-time at my company 'IM' since June (as intern then part time in September) and I've contributed more to our products than all three full-time programmers by a significant margin. I've added nearly two dozen large features, including an impressive animation backend web service, and dozens of major bug fixes or QOL fixes that have added significant value to the product. In 15-20 hours I do 4x (at a minimum) the work that my fellow coworkers do no matter what metric you want to use (PRs, code contributions, commits, issues closed) ergo by that metric I'm a 8x-10x programmer relative to my coworkers.

I'm also paid 1/4th-1/5th what they are. Which means I'm walking if they don't agree to salary negotiations in a couple months. They'll quickly realize they won't find someone as good at the salary I would have requested but by then they're SOL. The sad part is I'll make more working at Staples than I did at IM. A retail position paying more than a software developer position.

My superpower is being ignored.

This will probably make me sound like an ass but here we go. I am not meaning to offend.

You need to value yourself before you can honestly expect others to value you. I understand that it is a vicious circle as it appears that no one values you after all the effort your put into your work and side-projects. But you demonstrate that you don't value yourself as you accepted a shit-waged job for what? Experience? Exposure? If you know an IM/programmer gets paid $x why work for significantly less unless you are literally only working one day a week.

If you think you are a cut above the rest in value then you need to make that known.

Whilst you think no one looks at your portfolio - make them look at it, show them it in person and have them engage with it "Wow, that looks interesting". You don't see rappers on the streets saying "Here is a link soundcloud" they hand out CDs with their shit on it (Tbh they probably do now hand out links to their soundcloud).

Apologies if I am in fact an ass.

You are.

I think Ring_World mentioned one time what would Chad Veiva said re: dating profile. Well this is what Chad Veiva would say about theirself:

I am better than everyone else. I am extremely hard working, focused, stubborn, disciplined. I'm selfless to a fault. I am statistically most likely the smartest person in a room of 100. I have never met a programmer as talented as me.

My ego is enormous but I don't flaunt it. I'm realistic and understand my thinking is slightly delusional or overconfident so I downplay it. This may have a negative effect of making people think I don't value myself or have self-esteem problems.

But the issue I have is others don't recognize me. I am ignored despite how god-damn incredible I am. If someone talks to me for more than a few minutes that realize how intelligent and personable I am. All my closest friends say I'm an inspiration, especially since they know the terrible circumstances I came from.

I live in Fayetteville. It's a military town with basically no options. 90% of jobs are retail or fast food. I have a minimum of 9 more months here before I graduate with an AAS and can pursue my BS elsewhere (NC State, Georgia Tech, etc). There are very few programming jobs that don't require security clearance. (I'm a socialist that hates the existing administration with severe mental health issues; I wouldn't give myself security clearance). I took what I got. I misplayed the initial salary negotiation, mistakenly believing they couldn't afford what I wanted and really wanting to get away from Staples. I admit that was a mistake, but it wasn't because I undervalued myself. Regardless I refuse to go back to retail.

Re: portfolio, you think I can force someone HR goon looking at an online job application view my portfolio? LOL. Like they could even understand what they're looking at with their BS in BS.

Finished the testing portion of the hiring process I was going through yesterday. Now just a waiting game to find out whether I passed everything and to hopefully get hired! Think I did okay on everything but I'm only positive on passing one of the three stages.

Some good news came out of the interview though in that usually its 3-4 weeks between the pre-screening and orientation for the position and at least two weeks to hear back, but they have an orientation starting next Tuesday so I should be hearing back this week and it would be absolutely amazing if I was able to start working that soon.

Otherwise because of the hiring I had to get two of my exams moved around so that's what Monday and Tuesday this week are all about. Crush those out and then I'm officially done school for this academic year and all goes well making that good money.

9 months is no time at all. That will fly by. Then get out of there and go to a school that has the CS faculty and connections to develop and promote your game to where you want it.

Right, so you value yourself but you don't show it outwardly (to avoid coming across as a someone unpleasant) so people don't value you - in turn you make a post; perhaps rightfully so detailing your frustrations and current circumstances with a tldr: "Why don't people value me?".

Re: Re: About the portfolio.

 I didn't say show your portfolio to a HR goon. HR goons are HR goons - if anything they probably filter out your CV because you might be missing a single qualification or you didn't write the word HTML on it.

What I was trying to say is that where a portfolio is required - people need to see it. If, genuinely, no one looks at a portfolio then why is the #1 piece of advice on r/learnprogramming "Do small projects to build your portfolio". No employer is going to look over your CV and go "Hmm, Veiva's provided a link to their website, I'll just go and visit it and see what they are about". I don't particularly care for your CV nor how it is laid out but if it's "See xyz.com for all my projects" that's likely the wrong way to do it and listing relevant/all projects you have worked on in your CV for each job will atleast allow you to hit more keywords for HR to "weigh" your CV and give the interviewer more of an idea about you.

Apparently you are already shit-hot at things so I probably didn't need to write any of this.
