You're kidding, right? I'm sorry you feel that way, but that is really irrational thinking.

Admittedly I'm probably caught up in all the craziness that tonight had to offer.  No, I probably won't be physically assaulted or anything, but I know that legislation is coming that will make my life, and those like me, a living hell.  And I am truly worried that results like these will embolden people to, if not assault, at least to create a hostile environment.

It's not at all irrational. Transgender people (and gay people too) already had reasons to fear for their safety, and now that a president has been elected largely because of his bigoted subtext, it's not going to get better. And in the long term, a republican president, Congress, and Supreme Court is going to undo a lot of the progress we achieved in the last 8 years.

Pence literally supports shocking the gay out of people. Fear is valid.

If it's of any consolation, America has always been run by racist bigoted butt heads and it's managed to be pretty ok. Shame well likely halt if not back peddle all the cool progressive legislature we had going for the past 4-8 years though.

Trump hasn't won quite yet, but I have to get SOME sleep so I'll wake up to see the fate of my country. And it's looking pretty [bleep]ing bleak.

absolutely saddened, shocked, disgusted.

a man with no political experience now leads the united states. a reality tv show host, a failure of a businessman, an anti-science buffoon, a bully with little taste, class, or civility, has successfully conned his way into the white house by exploiting the fears of a largely under-educated, angry voter base. honestly an embarrassment.

When America isn't great again in 4 years, are 58 59 (and counting) million Americans going to blame the Democrats or minorities?

Well, I have to say, I'm thrilled to see Clinton lose. And I'm terrified to see Trump win....hopefully any damage he can do is limited and the democrats nominate a decent candidate for 2020..

Well,

9/11

11/9

Catastrophes that shook the world.

Our PM was also taken down today, so we're looking at the first Russian-friendly (or at least friendlier) government in over a decade. Then again, current leading party was rotten thoroughly.

So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends.

RPG is constantly dealing with psycho exes.

Muggi reminds us of the joys of polygamy.

Saq is totally oblivious to how much chicks dig him.

I strike out every other week.

Kalphite wages a war against the friend zone.

Randox pretty much stays rational.

Etc, etc

Trump has been more supportive of LGBT people than any Republican nominee in history. Romney, McCain, Bush, Dole, Bush, Reagan, etc. were all far more anti-LGBT than Trump. And all the Trump supporters I've interacted with online don't care about orientation at all, as long as you aren't pushing for laws to ban free speech they're completely OK with anyone of any gender, orientation or race. Trump winning is an extremely positive thing for LGBT tolerance amongst the right side of American politics.

As for Pence, he's a VP. He won't have any significant influence on policy.

If that's what you think supporting LGBT means, then that's incredibly disappointing.

I stayed up till around 10:30 AM and went to bed right after Trump's "speech". I think people should give him the benefit of the doubt before they start panicking too much. Honestly i'm just happy Clinton lost. She doesn't deserve to be the first female America president.

It's not about Trump as much as it's about who he's nominating for the Supreme Court. He already released his short list and we're screwed for the next 40 years if he gets more than 1 justice in.

Okay but have you actually read the republican platform on lgbt rights

Or spoken to lgbt folks on whether or not the right is pro-lgbt (surprise: it's still really super anti-lgbt, milo existing didn't change that, sorry)

Because the party that he's running for - the one that is now running things beyond just him - are just a tiny bit in favor of torturing the gay out of kids, as an official stance (Obfuscator, remember when you argued that the us didn't torture gay people? It kinda does, pence wants to fund it, it's legal in a lot of red states, conversion therapy is basically a human rights violation)

And he's kind of going along with it, and pandering to the people that started it, and making promises about his supreme court nominee to them specifically. you know, the guy that's filling the empty slot on the court, who will end up shaping policy for many years after trump is but a footnote in history? The names he's named aren't exactly pro-gay

And - surprise - a lot of his supporters are also violently bigoted

This has been a message from your friendly neighborhood gay. if trump is pro-lgbt it's only because people like reagan before him had the policy of "sit back and let AIDS sort 'em out". Which happens to be Pence's policy, and the policy of a lot of mainstream Republicans, coincidentally.

I voted trump

I support the wall if he does an amnesty first. The lack of proper border security to prevent the flow of people into a nation is a problem. My sisters boyfriend is an illegal immigrant from mexico. His situation is hopeless and ironically a trump wall + amnesty has the best chance to help him out. What people don't acknowledge is the immigration system is 100% busted right now and a long term way to prevent immigration while helping those already in would have the best outcome.

I am against free trade deals. The economy won't be fixed by raising minimum wage or tech jobs or government jobs. We need millions of jobs where goods are produced. Setting up a system where American industry can be protected will benefit the average joes who don't go to college and are willing to work and want to do things like own a home and go on vacation.

I am against bringing in Syrian refugees. Now let me be clear I am dating a girl who is not a citizen and from Iran and ofc she is scared right now. I personally do not think trump is targeting people like her but problematic people that the left would ignore because its not politically correct. But there is a HUGE difference between a secular college educated person and a refugee. All in all its a scummy policy but I don't blame him for doing it.

Gay rights. I think as far as gay rights go, gay people are a vulnerable group who does need some legal protection and a culture to foster that. That said I feel that our culture has swung too far the other way with things like being judged negatively for not supporting Caitlyn Jenner. All in all I think we went from protecting LGBT+SLJDFLWJDLA legally to to culturally which I feel swung too far to the left. That said Trump/Pence's gay policies are horrific.

Affordable care act. Objectively worse stance on it than hillary.

Birth control. Objectively worse stance on it than hillary.

Supreme Court. Trump released a list of his candidates for the Supreme Court and NBC which is more liberally biased than FOX is conservatively biased was actually rather okay with his choices. Which says that despite it all Trump might still be a moderate.

Remember in 2008 when Obama was elected and Republics were calling Obama the anti-Christ and that he was coming to strip America of their 2nd amendment rights? Remember how literally none of the crazy stuff people said was going to happen because of Obama never happened?

I feel like this election is the same exact thing just on the other foot. Rarely anything in life will be as bad as you think it will be, and a Trump presidency will be no different.

People love to panic over politics, no surprises there. I don't think Trump will be very good but I'm hopeful that he can be mostly "contained"

Frankly, I worry more about 1) A Republican-majority congress and 2) Trump's nomination.

I haven't reviewed the latter. The former could be prevented by Democratic fillibusters since it's not a super majority.

But I don't doubt America will do worse under Trump than it would have Clinton. Clinton would've easily stalled any social regressions (in other words, stalled attacks against women and minorities) while keeping the status quo (steady increase of wealth concentration to the capitalist elite). The same cannot be said for Trump who ran on a platform marginalizing and attacking minorities.

I agree with you, but I think it's likely Clinton foreign policy would have been much more damaging than Trump. She's essentially one of the most hawkish members of the mainstream democrats; it's going to be difficult for trump to be as aggressively militaristic as she's been.
