Signature Limits Increased to 100Kb!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everybody!

We have decided to add a little more weight to the signature file size limits!

The limit has been increased from 40Kb to 100Kb, another 60Kb for you to play with. Please remember that the pixel dimensions have not changed. You must still keep within 450 x 200 pixels in your images.

The avatar limits have not changed and you must keep them no larger than 100 x 100 pixels and 8kb in file size.

Some information to remind you of the rules:

Forum Signature Limits are 450 pixels wide by 200 pixels high by 100Kb file size. This means that you can have up to four images, as long as the total width/height/file size does not exceed 450 x 200 x 100Kb.

This is an example of an image that follows the signature rules.

Avatar limits are 100 pixels wide by 100 pixels high, by 8Kb file size.

Here is an image that follows the avatar rules.

Below are two guides complete with images to help you better understand how to make sure your signatures and avatars are within our guidelines!

Remember that even if your profile allows you to use an image, it does not necessarily mean that the image adheres to the signature and avatar rules. If you see any signatures or avatars that break the rules, please use the "report this post" feature and select the reason related to signatures and avatars.

This is also a good time to remind everyone to keep a copy of your signature on your computer. When signatures are removed we remove the entire thing; keeping a backup is the best way to ensure you don't lose anything in your signature.

Holy cabbage! 100kb sig limit on Tif?!!

I never thought I'd live to see the day, this is great! \'

Doing this will just slow down the forums and the only reason they're doing this is because they're to lazy to make their sigs smaller in file size like everyone else. I already see to many sigs that are way to big and this isn't helping.

I'm sorry but it's their sigs, their forums, and their choice to do whatever they want with them. If you don't like it don't use the sigs.

Calling the Tip.It staff lazy isn't very nice, especially when they've put a lot of hard work into making these sigs.

Pretty much what Dragon said.

Thread terminated.

I guess that means I'm the thread Terminator?

No Tip.Iters were harmed in the making of this post.

So report them if they are too big. All this update means is that Tip.It will have to get a lot stricter on the signature rules, and punish those who do break the rules a bit more than just removing the signature if it's extremely over the lines.

Anyways, woohoo more space...

This increase was something that we've been thinking about for a while and while you might perceive us as "lazy" for deciding to increase limits, we were lagging far behind the limits that other fansites imposed on their own forums. Signatures are not hosted by tip.it forums, but are remotely hosted by each user. Because of this, forums are not slowed down by the number of signatures; the speed of your pages loading is mostly determined by your own internet connection/speed. If our forums are slowed by anything that is userbased, it would be the number of users suddenly showing up at one time.

This has been planned for awhile for multiple reasons.

1) Stat sigs from other sites such as draynor.net had a 60 kb sig option, 20 kb above our limits, which lead to lots of removals when people didn't know the difference.

2) Other Fansites have much higher limits, Our's was a meager 40, Zybez offer's 90, Sal's had 60. It's only fair to our users that we try to stay competitive in our users in a day of high speed internet access.

In a page of 20 posts, assuming everyone has 100 kb signatures, this is only a 1200 KB increase per page. Chances are not everyone will have a sig that large and it wont be that much difference of a load time

Our Goal as a fansite is to offer competitive and attractive features and rules that would not hurt our users and benefit them.

Anytime a rule can be changed or a feature can be added. to make our users happier (RL pic's , Dynamic sigs, Sig limits) We are very willing to consider implementing it.

Without access to the numbers, we all know other fansites get lots of views and traffic too, and all have much larger signature rules, Clearly if a user can use a sig at zybez , they should be able to use it here with us as well, without having to worry about making a special sig for us.

I personally think 100kb is too big, don't see why anyone would need it to be that size, 60 would have been fine in my opinion.

I agree completely the other highest number for signature size is 90 and that's Zybez, which is way over what we need, and I don't feel having the biggest sig size is the most important thing when it comes to what forum people choose.

This raises the question:

How is tip.It paying for all the Bandwidth from what this will cause & the signatures? :?:

Especially with so many ads on Tip.it compared to Zybez, RuneHQ or Sals, whenever someone complains about the ads they say the need the ads for hosting and bandwidth costs, I'd much rather have 60 kbs for sigs and less ads than 100 kbs for sigs and the same ads and popups.

Wow, this is unexpected. I personally thought it would never happen as Albosky threatened to remove signatures completely if the topic was brought up again.

Anyway, I guess it will be useful, even though I won't be using a signature that size, unless you want a Tip.it Dynamic signature with a few goal signatures.

Shows how different Peter is to Albosky, or how little Peter has worked, and thus isn't as cranky as Albosky was...yet ::'
