Clans & Swearing

The Observer

I've seen many clans where swearing is allowed, but only if it's not being used as a flame or racial slur or anything of that. I am asking, does your clan allow swearing? What is the reason why this is allowed?

Yes Clan Jaguar allows swearing as long as it is not racial.

I would see any clan that didnt allow it in there IRC chan, or w/e, to be more of an Anarchy. Limiting there members and telling them what they can and cant say is rediculous. And if you need to vent a bit, its cool. Arnt the reqs to play rs 13+? Wouldnt you think a 13 can handle the F-bomb?

Upon entering our WebChat, there is a HUGE Parental Advisory sign saying that we're probably going to offend you with the things we say, and that entering the channel means you're not allowed to complain about it...

Well we (or rather I) allow some of the less vulgar obscenity's such as "Hell" and "Damn". I do not tolerate the more vulgar language, or our users (on the board) using words as weapons against each other.

It has not been hard to enforce this rule; people underestimate the ability of a community's atmosphere to foster respect, and decency. It's all about what you as a leader want for your clan, you don't have to put up with this stuff if you don't want too. Further more if you have the right people they will not have any problems with your rules about profanity. As for the wrong people: In my case I simply ask them to leave if they cant get their language under control.

Yes, MD does not allow some of the more obscene swear words ar Bufoman said. It's been a rule from the start, and I don't really care for it, really.

Seeing that I vent my frustrations physically, I'm not affected that much ::' . And we usually don't have problems with people swearing usually.

No, not really. I don't mind swearing as long as you aren't using it in every other sentence. Like above, we don't allow it to be used towards each other or any racist comments.

A swear word here or there, on a particularly frustrating occasion, is perfectly acceptable in my opinion, in our clan atmosphere.

Swearing at random... and in excess... is not.

I'm not going to tolerate a two word post where one is the f-bomb, I'll go ahead and delete that... but... in a long post with valid points, if my members feel the need to vent their frustration with an obscene word... I think we can handle it.

Racism is a different issue in my opinion, using a racial slur, or being generally derogatory towards an individual... or a race as a whole, is never appropriate, and should never, under any circumstances be tolerated.

It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and the darkness, nothing more.

The true master of Death does not seek to run away from Death. He accepts that he must die,

and understands there are far, far worse things in the living world than dying.

To the well organized mind death is but the next great adventure.

And now, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Like NS said, we allow swearing, it happens, you put up with it.

But at the same time, allowing it means there's no focus on it, you don't think about it.

Not having any rules gives the 'power to the people', and in TSA's case the people use that power very well. We don't insult each other (except when joking), and.. well the only other time I see swearing is the occasional vent at some bad luck ingame.

I think we're better off without rules like these. A common sense of decency is much more effective than trying to over-police your loyal clan members.

The only problem their is some people do not have a common sense of decency. We had a few bad seeds slip through the applications system in the past... they sure knew how to make others feel lousy by calling them filthy names- and making obscene suggestions. Needless to say they got the boot quite promptly.

I would not say we are exactly G rated, more like PG-13. Still we rarely use profanity, unless its to strengthen our posts. An example would be Damn those guys where good ok so I dont even have many examples to give, because our members tend to refrain from using profanity just out of habit.

Now what they do away from the board, and not towards each other is none of my business, I just ask that they treat each other with respect on my board. This includes treating my board with respect and not turning it into a cess pool.

Some mods are stricter then others, but at times when they are sleeping the chat becomes quite 'offensive' for some people. You can basically say whatever you with, as long as there is intent for humor.

Off course, when somebody feels insulted, they are free to say and we'll mostly stop.

There's a difference between racism and race based jokes.

(but then again, I don't take offense to anything, so that's sometimes a problem lol)

No, My clan (The death monkeighs) is G-rated (I'd say more PG)

.What the hell

.Crap

stuff like that is allowed, but not this:

.FFS

.BS

.F*CK

etc...

Is not.

Sure people say it's too strict or whatever, but for people like me, that enjoy clean atmospheres, I love it ::'

And it's not like you will be banned from the clan if you say it, most new FAs that join the IRC do =\

I'd say the GES maintains a PG atmosphere as far as language, and it hasn't caused us any big problems. Just one less thing for a user to get upset over...

If you put a limit on swearing it all depends on the maturity of the clan. If there all immature then you need a rule to stop them from overuse of a swear word. How ever if you have a mature enough clan then a rule is not needed as many already tone the language down themselves. This i for the forums

Meanwhile on Irc. In all honesty swearing is heard alot. It cant really be helped if you ask me as people take on it like there having a conversation. They dont think about editing it just say whats in there heard. But i dont agree to racism swearing or anything thats purposly trying to offend someone. I think though and if you look at it makes you laugh at first and then go in and you understand that the TSA Parental Advisory label is a good idea as it does warn you so you cant really help.

Theres a website that i could show you that shows you the amount of swearing that has been tallied up ( bout top 100) but im not sure im allowed to post the link so i wont.

But i will say something swearing is needed sometimes thats what they were created for. They were created for a purpose just dont abuse that purpose

Well, the clan I was part of (until I got destroyed by the activity sweep monster  ), the NAA, had a fair amount of swearing. I don't mind it at all, really, unless of course it's flaming other people. I don't know why exactly they allowed swearing (probably because the vast majority of them said that they were at least 18 years old. And trust me they acted like it too  ). Here are two prime examples of why I feel swearing in non-formal social situations is acceptable:

[hide=examples]Guy on game: "Damn it! I died!"

Guy to another guy: "Your mom is idiot who can't afford to send you to public school."[/hide]

Now, in example one I used a swear word. In example two I used no swear words. Which is more offensive? That's my point. It's not the words that matter but the meaning that the words convey.

Off my tangent:

Yes, my clan did swear, but they did not even try to go around the censor (which is good) and only did so in the cc. They never flamed anyone, just talked "tough". FYI guys, girls really don't care if you talk tough; they just want you to act GAR ::'

We've never really had a problem with it, though it's mostly up to moderator discretion. I'm the strictest mod on our boards and I'll almost always let swearing past, even if it's at someone, as long as it's done in a joking matter (most of it is from me anyway). The only points where I'll step in and make someone change what they've said is the few instances where we have had serious racist/homophobic comments, or when someone takes a joke way past the line and someone really starts getting offended.

It is worth noting that recently one of the admins edited our board's censor to change the F-bomb to "truck," though since we had always prided ourselves on being very loose about swearing that was such an unpopular move that whoever did it still isn't admitting to it.

In my clan swearing is not allowed. We are very proud of our G-Rated atmosphere. Also personally I really hate when people swear a lot. :shame:

yes we are :)

you swear in the clan chat you usualy get 1 warning if you do it again you get kicked from chat... you do it in our IRC chat the almighty Y will kick you lol.... i dont use teamspeak so i cant say much on it... would assume the same though.

as far as forums go most is blocked and filter evading is only asking for big big trouble.... i dont want to say we are strict but we kinda are on the language rule.... but it keeps us G rated....

as for the one who sais something about runescape being 13+ thats not true.... its 13+ without parental permission... if you know how to use a computer at age 4 and your mommy and daddy say its ok to play then your allowed to.... so for that the reason we dont allow swearing.... we abide by all jagex rules and a few of our own. and yes you'll get a swift kick in the......... shin outa the clan if you break them...

all in all though TDM is a great clan even if you cant swear

Phox

p.s. we also dont allow abrivieated version of swear words... so no "wtf" type acronyms either :shame:

It's not a problem with TSA, but people do swear but in a conversation like sense, and we're not racist etc. Something like this. Cabbage that guy with a gs two hitted me, or in a joking sense cabbage you, I wish life was that easy.

Thoroughly retired, may still write now and again
